are iowa sports" jon: welcome back. one of the few things people have been critical of this season is adam woodbury for the iowa hawkeyes. but really his numbers haven't been that bad. alex giaimo tells us how the hawkeyes big man is using the critics as fuel for his game. "(alex giaimo) adam woodbury's fourth year on the iowa hawkeyes has been nothing short of incredible. he's heard plenty of criticism from haters over the years but this season, the 7 foot 1 center, is finally feeling appreciated. (adam woodbury) i mean who would say it
6:22 pm
obviously feels nice being appreciated but for the few people that didn't appreciate me that kind of gave me more motivation to work even harder. (mike gesell) people get on him or when they're praising him i think he still just stays true to himself and still just plays his game. you know he's not looking for approval or anything he's just looking to get better every single day. (giaimo) he's a "dirty work" type of player, so his stats were never eye-popping.. but this year he's averaging over 9 rebounds and close to a double-double in every game. he also wins nearly every 50/50 ball on the floor. (fran mccaffery) his role is obviously much more critical than its ever been. he's been a starter since he got here but the way he anchors the defense and the communication that he provides and the rebounding. you know he doesn't make mistakes he's scoring the ball. he provides an element of toughness that i think every team needs. (giaimo) woodbury always believed that he was on the right path and now hawkeye fans are now buying in. (adam woodbury) i think if you guys listened to some of my interviews from back
6:23 pm
what i wanted to do. i wanted to help bring the iowa team back to some of the national prominence that it used to have. this is a very storied program that we have so we're just trying to help it and get some of the esteem that it once had. (giaimo) in iowa city with your hawkeye headquarters report, alex giaimo, local 4 sports. " woodbury and the hawkeyes tip off at 8 pm tonight on espn. the hawkeyes are trying to stay ahead of the hoosiers in the big ten standings. iowa is currently at the top of the conference. jon: on the ice-- the iowa wild are rolling back into wells fargo weekend for a pair of games against grand rapids friday and saturday. since christmas break the wild are 9-7. and they're coming off of a five to one win in chicago last weekend. the wild have won three of their last four in large part because they've gotten healthy up the middle with their centers. it's a team that looks rejuvinated the second half of the season here. while they're still back in the standings-- head coach john torchetti says it's a lot more fun putting some tallies in the win column. he feels the program is at a point where it once was before they made the move to iowa. " before i got here before we moved from houston that's exactly how it feels. great locker room great atmosphere everyone

the guys who are doing well and develop correctly are the ones that get called up and that's what the idea is being an american league team. it's a lot of fun, fans have been coming out in droves. we've been getting over 10 thousand on a weekend the last five games and they've seen some pretty nice games." the wild will be doing thier annual pink in the rink event tomorrow night as they host the grand rapids griffins. and then again saturday the two teams meet both games will drop the puck around 7 p.m. jon/2ram jack/2ram we'll be right back... you're
