" local 5 news at 6 in hd starts now. we are iowa" nikki: good evening. welcome to local 5 news, i'm nikki davidson. glad you're with us tonight. nikki: today's big story. a man has been shot and killed police officer... nikki/1 shot: it happened inside an urbandale hotel early this morning. police officers hotel, because drugs... but the suspects the officers when they arrived. local five's jacob peklo has more.... jacob peklo, reporting: "investigators spent all morning and part of the afternoon, urbandale . the

hotel lobby between multiple officers and three suspects." sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "shortly after 4 this morning, our officers were tripped to the holiday inn at 4800 merle hay road on a drug complaint." but when police arrived, two women and a man started fighting with the officers near the main entrance. sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "shortly after they got there, a scuffle started out with a male subject. he ended up firing off one round during the scuffle and our officers returned fire." police say that man died at the scene. and during the scuffle, two women ran away. several other police departments were called as backup, and helped arrest the women about half a mile down the road. sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "everything happened really fast." authorities say it's going to be an extensive investigation, which includes dci, the polk county medical examiner, and attorney's office and urbandale police detectives. sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "it's an officer involved shooting, with a death, so we have to make sure everything is covered, that everything is done right."

make sure that the officers followed correct protocol during the fight. sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "video evidence is a key to any crime and investigation and our officers have been wearing body cameras for quite some time." jacob peklo, reporting: "at this time, authorities are not releasing the name of the officers or the suspects. investigators are expected to hold a press conference early next week, releasing more details. reporting in urbandale, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa." nikki/1 shot: the manager of the holiday inn told us that everyone in the hotel was safe during the incident. he says it's the first time anything like this has happened since it opened in 19-98. nikki: police have arrested a man for firing a gun outside of platinum kutz barber shop in des moines. des moines police say 45 year old reginald fitzgerald douglas stood in the parking lot of the barber shop last night around 7 p.m. yelling and fired a gun into the air... no one was hurt in the incident... douglas is facing charges of felon in possession of a firearm...dischari ng a firearm within city limits and possesion of marjuana...

breaking news nationally tonight.. nikki: supreme court justice antonin (ska-lee-a) scalia has died at the age of 79. scalia, who was nominated in 19-86 by president reagan, was found dead in his room at a west texas resort. he reportedly died in his sleep last night from natural causes. the long time justice will be replaced by president obama, it will be his third nomination to the supreme court. local five will have more on this tonight at ten. nikki/ots following the race for the white house.... the democrats are out west... while the republicans get ready to debate tonight in south carolina. it's just one week ahead of the states g-o-p primary. abc's lana zak has more. "meals from the heartland"... and spent this valentines day eve packing meals for starving people around the world. the fun, fast- paced event was a good way for employees to bond all while helping a charity. "right now i think they have about a hundered people. they are packing the rice and soy meal which is shipped all over the world. " "it's just great. it's a great team building excercise for them. a holiday weekend with over a hundered people here to help promote heart health in the month of feburary is phenomenal." nikki: todays goal was put enough meals together to feed 30 to 40 thousand people... and coming up later this spring... they'll be trying to back a million meals in one week during spring break. nikki: a local 13 year old who lost his year-long battle with leukemia made it his mission to get the word out on blood donation. sam lemar asked to hold a blood drive to replenish the supply he used. he also needed a bone marrow transplant leading to today's drive at indian hills junior high

the goal of the drive is to keep lemar's legacy going by holding the annual blood drive and bone marrow registery drive. and walkers were encouraged to wear their red flannel to support the 20-16 ymca annual campaign. awards were given out to overall male and female runners along with prizes for costumes.
