tv Local 10 News 100AM ABC March 16, 2016 1:07am-1:37am EDT
we are fanned out across south florida. >> and our senior political reporter will have analysis. >> let's'segin at the donald trump rally. he kept us waiting, but he finally spoke. >> calvin, and lori, trump celebrated one of the biggest nights of his campaign by delivering one of his shortest speeches. we shouted questions as he left the ballroom, and they went answered. trump took the podium, and boy did he have every reasonn to celebrate. the tasks from here on out for the trump0 campaign is whether they can secure enough of the remaining delegates to avoid
trump congratulated rubio and then went after him for attack ads. he said the violence at rallies are a representation of the frustration in the country. he struck a more measured tone regarding the road ahead. >> the fact is we have to bring our party together. we have to bring it together. [ applause ] >> we have something happening that actually makes the republican party probably the bigges political story anywhere in the world, everybody's writing about it. all over europe, all over the world, they're talking about it. millions of people are coming in to vote. that was an exactly today.many, many more people. i'll looking at the polling booths all around the country where it's up. and the lines are 4, 5, 6
>> and so it became clear to reporters here tonight that trump would not be answering questions. this was the largest group o` supporters to join trump here at mar-a-lago. but we knew the chances of us asking him a question were rather slim when the campaign announced that there would not the be a microphone in the back of the ballroom. trump took all of florida's 99 delegates. we're live tonight in mar-a-lago. >> anchor: almost a clean sweep tonight for trump. >> anchor: what a disappointing ss for marco rubio losing his state and suspending his pain. >> we have more on this. >> reporter: the announcement of that suspension is really what seemed to shock this crowd. all along, marco rubio was saying even up until last
he'll go on. he even planned to be in utah tomorrow, but the numbers were not there for him. too big to overcome. even with his support of his home county that he was really counting on today.senator rubio has been slamming the polling all along. and it turned out to be on target. the poing, 2-1, and that's what his loss was. he came out here with his speech to th crowd. and very staunch supporters of 200 people. it sundayed like part concession speech and part campaign rhetoric. and senator rubio ripped into a political storm that paved the way to o nald trump. >> i blame most of it on our political establishment. a political eablishment that for far too long has looked down on conservatives as
throwers. a political establishment that for far too long has taken the granted. and confuses cronyism for capitalism and free business for enterprise. >> and he warned the divisive happen to his party. he said he worked so hard. we couldn't work any harder. that was a unami. and senator marco rubio becomes theenly candidate to lose his own home state. he suspended his campaign. and what that means is not clear. and suspended doesn't mean ends, but clearls for now, marco rubio is not going forwardo pursue to nomination for the president
>> anchor: he certainly was commended by all the candidates in their speeches tonight. >> anchor: and now a big ght for hillary clinton who easily took florida. >> we're live inest palm beach. >> clinton was certainly campaigning to the very last minute in. stopping at a dunkin' donuts and meeting voters. and itertainly worked. the crowd here at her event was pumped up. very, very passionate. and a big victory for hillary clinton. and she thanked her supporters and bernie sanders for the work that he's doing elevating the middle class and breaking down barriers for families as well. and making those tough choices. and if she weree to become the next president, she talked about the need to get rid of trump.
for president call for rounding up 12 million immigrants and banning muslims from the united states. when he embraces torture, that doesn't make him strong. it makes him wrong. [ applause ] >> reporter: and this, what's going on behind me, this is the cm after the storm. everyone is breaking down right now. and clinton went on with a strong lead in florida. and in north carolina, she delivered and followed through on what was expected of her. and now it's on to the next round. >> anchor: thanks a lot. >> anchor: and what a tough night for bernie sanders who lost florida by a lot and ohio by a little. >> here is a principal, a bedrock principle of my campaign.
as a nation, not by how many millionaires and billionaires we have, but by how we treat the weakest and most vulnerable amongst us. [ applause ] >> anchor: now let's break down the ohio primary nunuers. hillary clinton, 56%. to bernie sanders, 43%. >> anchor: and the republicans, john kasich taking his home state by 46%. a 10% lead over donald trump. and ted cruz with 14%. marco rubio not even getting double digits. >> anchor: and theovernor of ohio won the ohio primary, which was a st-win for him. >> anchor: and the ohio governor spoke earlier tonight. >> to have people believe in you, and to believe that you can bring people together and strengthen our country, i have to thank the people of the great state of oh. i love you. that's all i can say.
let's look at the illinois primary. another win for donald trump. trumum taking 39%. ted cruz behind with 30%. john kasich, 20%. marco rubio in fourth place. >> anchor: andillary clinton was in a battle there for awhile, but it looks like she pulled this one out. 58%-41%. hillary clinton taking illinois. >> anchor: and missouri, donald trump taking this with 42%. ted cruz very close behind with 41%. john kasich just 9%. and marco rubio 6%. >> anchor: that was a seesaw battle for a very long time. and speaking of that, it looks like bernie sanders is still ahead ofillary clinton. hillary clinton was ahead for much of the night, but then bernie sanders seems to be
>> anchor: and despite trump's wins, cruz is not backin down. >> only two campaigns have a plausible path to the nomination. ours and trump's. nobody else has any mathematical possibility whatsoever. only one campaign has beaten donald trump over and over and over again. [ apapause ] not once, not twice, not three times, but nine times across the country. >> anchor: that's ted cruz, north carolina though is also holding a primary tonight. we can't forget about them. let's look at the republican numbers. trump taking north carolina 41%.
john kasich, came in a distant third here at 13%. marco rubio 8% tonight. >> anchor: and democrats, with hillary winning 55% over bernie sanders' 41%. let's bring it back to florida in our presidential primary. we have a political editor here. >> let's talk about miami-dade. marco rubio was counting on a big win in his home county, and he won by a sizable margining but not big enough. rubio got 63% of the vote to trump's 22%. ted cruz not 9%. that's sizable win. but again, it didn't offset trump in other parts of the state. and in broward -- miami-dade
vote for hillary clinton. 75% for hillary clinton and 25% for bernie sanders. and broward is the most democratic county. and trump trounced everybody in broward. 49% to trump. 13% to ted cruz. and on the democratic` side, 73% clinton and 26% bernie sanders. and she is the far and away winner. and she won florida by 31 points. this was just not even close. >> anchor: and i think the headline tonight is looking at marco rubio, he is sororof ending his campaign where it began. not the same spot, but near. >> he ran a pretty good campaign buthe really never got traction.
marco rubio and jeb bush, we ththght one of them might go all the way. and neither of them went all the way.y. >> anchor: and the chances of marco rubio and bush endorsing trump are 0. >> 0. >> and delegate count on the republican side, we have trump with 568. ted cruz 370. and marco rubio 163 will not count towards anything. john kasich 129. >> anchor: n the democratic hillary clinton already has 1001 to bernie sanders' 666. and michael, do you think we're headed to a contested election? >> yes, on the republican side.
sent out said that we are going to get enough delegates between now and july that john kasich is not going to be a player at the convention and trump will not. and ted cruz said that it's rely about trump and me. between kasich and cruz, they are ing to work hard to create a contested convention in the hopes that one of them will be the nominee. >> anchor: okay. all right. analysis. >> anchor: coming up, we're continuing our election coverage on this primary night. trump taking homthe night's biggest prize, our sunshine ste. >> anchor: and a big night for hillary clinton as she also wins florida. >> anchor: and with politics
