>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley 's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning. it is 6 o'clock on this tuesday december 6th and we're following breaking news. >> new jersey troopers pay their respects saluting a fellow trooper killed in the line of duty. >> a fire in the city's frankford section is impacting septa's market frankford line. >> vice president joe biden teased he may be leaving the door open to another presidential run. >> let's turn now to weather and traffic. meteorologist, david murphy and karen rogers. on. >> it's a cold start across the region and somewhat cloudy especially to the south. the farther north you go the better chance you have of some early sunshine.
let's start you with satellite and you can see how those clouds are kind of filling in but areas north not so much. and in philadelphia probably a little bit of early sunshine. then the clouds get thicker and you can see that rain on the way. that will be an issue later this afternoon. also a winter weather advisory has been posted for the poconos. this kicks in at 4 o'clock this afternoon. it will probably take that long for the rain to get all the way up into the poconos and by the time it does it will be cold enough to change over to snow and then that continues overnight until 6:00 a.m. wednesday morning. snowfall probably around one to 3 inches in the poconos tonight. 38 degrees is the current temperature in philadelphia. we've actually slipped a little bit in the last half hour and we're down to the freezing mark in trenton and still in the 20's in allentown and reading, 36 in wilmington, line in millville. cape may 41 degrees. here's how it's going to go today. we'll get some early sunshine, 7 o'clock's temperature is 36 degrees, though. and then by 10 o'clock, 40 and by noon 44 with those clouds getting thicker and then during the afternoon starting down south and winding up up to the north we'll see that
rain arriving became 3 o'clock it's probably raining in philadelphia and that's your high, 48 degrees. rain continue overnight and then tapering off early tomorrow morning. we're still looking for a cold snap after that later in the week i'm have details on all of this not only on future tracker6 with the rain karen but that that seven-day forecast coming up. >> all right, dave, that big two alarm fire we have been dawking about in frankford system affect the roads and mass transit. let's start with chopper6 live on the scene of this breaking news. this fire location is frankford avenue and sellers street. look at all the emergency workers on the scene with this two alarm fire but look how close it is to the market frankford line. that's the big problem for traffic with this. so, not only do you have issues driving around this area, you see all the fire crews near frankford avenue and sellers you have to stick to orthodox and paul street. it is also causing problems with the market frankford line. they have said they'll resume service instead of the shuttle busing but you want to expect delays taking the market frankford line and of course this is affecting septa's bus routes as well.
you can't drive through that area so bus routes three and five are being detoured around that two alarm fire on frankford avenue. newark line also reporting 12 minute delays so we've seen some other issues here with the regional rails already this morning. yesterday it was a rainy morning commute. it was a tough morning commute. we're looking at dry roads. that rain is coming this afternoon so it will be problems for your evening commute. right now i-95 at cottman southbound traffic headed towards center city you're moving all right. just a little volume out there. we have a big construction project. it starts dan get this t-lasts for two months and it's good evening affect traffic f you use mlk drive inbound, eastbound coming into the city this is going to be a big problem for you between sweetbriar drive and eakins oval. starts today, it lasts for two months so doesn't wrap up until january. having problems with the wall that's near the schuylkill river so it's going to be affecting traffic in this area from 9:00 until 3:00 and then again from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. so they're just opening it for little windows for your morning and evening commute but if you use mlk drive this
affects you starting today lasting until january tam. >> thank you karen. new jersey state trooper frankie williams had recently joined the force but his hope and promise caught short a driver ran head oninto officer williams killing them both. "action news" reporter katherine scott is joining us now cooper university hospital in camden. good morning, katherine. >> reporter: good morning, tamala. we're actually in port norris where that trooper williams was assigned. he was only 31 years old when he was killed in the line of duty last night. the other driver also perp rushed in the crash. so far state police have not released a whole lot of details about that other driver but here in port norris the troopers are mourning a loss of their own. let's go video right now from cooper university hospital. this was procession overnight as the trooper's body was taken from the hospital. officers lined up to salute the fallen freezing rain. williams was from atlantic
county, a member of the 156th state police class which graduated this past january. the crash in millville happened just before 7:00 p.m. but the road was closed for hours overnight for the investigation. at 6:59 p.m. police say a man in a toyota corolla traveling southbound on route 55 crossed the grass median entered the southbound lanes and struck the marked car head on as williams was responding to a call. the driver of the toyota was pronounced dead on the scene. trooper williams was air listed to cooper where he was pronounced dead. his death confirmed by state police around 1:00 a.m. route 55 is open. the road is clear. but the crash remains under investigation and at this point it's unclear what caused the driver of the toyota to veer over to the northbound lanes -- to veer over so this all remains under investigation this morning. the state police mourning the loss of trooper williams, only 31 years old. we are live in port norris, katherine scott, channel6
"action news." >> thank you katherine. back to our breaking news involving transit. an apartment fire near app septa line sent one person to the hospital forced a dozen people from their homes. "action news" reporter annie mccormick is live at the frankford section with word of rescues at that fire scene. annie. >> reporter: matt we just got updated information from the deputy fire chief. we do want to tell you that the fire is under control and as you can see behind me, fire crews still remain here. 12 people were rescued, 20 people were out of their homes but we're told that the red cross is taking care of them. now, as for the injuries, nine were injured including five adults and four children. they suffered injuries but are stable. most of the injuries we're told are minor. some are from people jumping to safety. take a look at this video. this is video from the scene. we're told the two alarm fire broke out around 4:00 a.m. here in the 4500 block of frankford avenue in the frankford section of this city. the fire was located in the
end of those row of businesses, a pizza shop we are told, that is the business that's at the corner with 10 apartments above. now, when fire crews arrived heavy fire was showing. when they arrived from the second and third floors that's where they saw the bulk of the flames. the building was occupied then evacuated. we know about the extent of at least one injury, a 21-year-old man suffered second degree morns of burns, he's in the hospital in stable condition with burns to the face and hands. deputy fire chief robert corrigan described the rescues where that people were at windows waiting for help. take a listen. >> came up there were a lot of people at windows. company was able to help assist those people to the ground. >> reporter: was that a challenge, because there's only one points -- point of exit? and we're told that the
20 people that are without a home are getting help from the red cross and again the people that were taken to the hospital, some transported themselves are all in stable condition. the cause of this fire and also where it began we are told still remains under investigation but still a scene out here and it will be for some time. for now reporting live in frankford, annie mccormick channel6 "action news." back to you. >> annie, thank you for. in and we're following developing new details in the shooting of a teenager in the germantown section of philadelphia. police now say that the 17-year-old was shot in the head during a robbery. it happened about 8:20 last night while he was sitting in the pavilion area of fern hill park. the suspect stole a wallet and cell phone before shooting the boy in the head and the hip. the victim ran about half a block before collapsing on applely street. police are searching for a white minivan in connection with this shooting. >> if you call up the irs and say you know what, i'm going to delay paying my taxes, you will probably get a fine, maybe something worse.
but somehow when the situation is reversed, it's no problem p maribel aber has our market watch report live at the nasdaq in times square. good morning, maribel. >> reporter: good morning, matt. it's the government. the irs says some tax refunds will be delayed until february 15 so if you claim the earned income tax credit or the additional child tax credit you can expect the delay. it's a move by congress to battle tax refund fraud and identity theft. the irs will use the extra time to check filings for signs of fraud before that refunds are mailed. if you don't crime either credit expect your refund 21 days after your fifty one accepted for processing. stocks posted modest gains yesterday enough to send the dow to a all time closing high. futures pointing to a mixed open. that's the late nest business. back over to you matt and tam. >> thank you maribel. time to talk about accuweather. but the umbrella in the car, don't need it now but might need it greater that's the idea. if you have optional errands you can get done in the
morning oral the afternoon i would say in the morning. it's going to be dry in the morning. sky6 showing you a chilly scene over the ben franklin bridge. clouds some breaks probably get some early sunshine before it really clouds up. but the temperatures respect cold and here they are for you. 38 degrees in philadelphia, 36 in wilmington, 32 the freezing mark in trenton and still in the 20's in allentown and reading and below freezing in lancaster. 39 degrees in millville and then at a little bit better in cape may, 41 degrees there. 40 in dover. cloud cover will have a tendency to thicken up fairly quickly during the morning hours and by 1 o'clock this afternoon there will also be that rain starting to push into cape may county, maybe coastal cumberland county and then areas past over delaware. for the rest of the afternoon it just continues to push all the way up to allentown. this is the 5 o'clock view. i think in philadelphia we have a pretty good shot at getting wet around 3 o'clock give or take maybe a half our there and then notice how up in the poconos by 5 o'clock
we're starting to see some snow build inform there is app winter weather advisory in the poconos starting late this afternoon and extending into early tomorrow morning. and this model also has a little bit of a changeover of snow al town we think the big effort travel issues will be up in the poconos. allentown maybe you see a wet snowflake in which case you use your head and slow down a little bit. rain everywhere else off and on straight up until 11 o'clock tonight and the snow-rain situation will be on storm tracker6 live tonight with cecily tynan. as we look at allentown's forecast today sun gives way to clouds, afternoon rain obviously arriving probably a little later in the day, 43 degrees is the high there. down the shore as soon as 1 o'clock in cape may you could start seeing rain. it will take a little bit longer to get into atlantic city and a high of 50 in most of our coastal communities an high of 48 degrees in philadelphia today with clouds building in after some early sunshine and afternoon rain arriving again in the city probably around 3 o'clock or so. and then winds out of the east-northeast at eight to 16, a little bit breezy.
overnight tonight cloudy skies with more rain falling intermittently overnight into early tomorrow morning, 43 is the overnight low. and then tomorrow by 6:00 a.m., there might still ablittle bit of a sprinkle around maybe a little snow flurry or light snow showers much snow shower up in the poconos. by 12 o'clock it's just clouds and late in the day there is the possibility of some sun coming back tomorrow. again, rain, not a whole lot most of the models ranging from about three-quarters of an inch of rain up to about an inch and that's spread over a long enough period where we don't expect any stream or creek flooding. your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast 48 degrees is today's high cloudy with that afternoon rain arriving. snow up in the poconos totaling about one to 3-inches by tomorrow morning. mostly cloudy on wednesday still cool, 52 the high and then thursday mostly cloudy with another shower popping up mainly in the afternoon and a high of 45. and then friday and saturday we're still looking at that colder air snapping in. highs in the tupper -- upper 30's both days. windy conditions so it will feel like the 20's. friday there could be a flurry thick mixed in. sunday mixing clouds an high

helicopter so they shut down the road. then they were able to reopen it at this point but still watch for possible restrictions with crews on the scene and they got to tow that car out of there. mill road at quarry road. you can stick to 363 trooper road instead. and the pennsylvania turnpike eastbound approaching bensalem we have a new accident coming in. we're hearing there are two cars involved and a tractor-trailer. so a big accident happening. this is on the turnpike eastbound approaching bensalem. you want to expect these delays eastbound on the pennsylvania turnpike. as we go to the waze app we're hearing from it's me baby, a member of the 6abc commuter team telling us about an object on the road on east walnut lane in philadelphia. how about these temperatures? it's cold out there so it's a good thing we're starting off dry. just in the 20's. 25 in martins creek, 26 in pottstown, below freezing in coatesville and kennett square. 38 degrees in center city. in new jersey just flirt browns mills, 36 in vineland but 41 in dover. headed up into the 40's with rain this afternoon, matt. >> okay, thanks karen.
new this morning, a supermarket employee in reading was shot when a customer's gun accidentally witness off inside the store. police and paramedics were called to the weis markets at north 13th and rockland streets yesterday afternoon. the customer said he was standing next to man when the man's gun fell to the floor and went off. one of the workers was grazed by the bullet. police have not said whether any charges will be filed. >> also new vice president joe biden may not be ready to leave washington quite yet. after senate session yesterday biden joked with reporters who asked if he would run for office maybe even president again. and he didn't clarify with any sort of no. >> run again? [laughter] >> 2020 . >> [laughter] i'm just -- i'm not committing not to run. i'm not committing to anything. >> biden represent edell wear for 36 years in the senate before becoming president barack obama's vice president in 2008.

montgomery drive. westbound traffic just a little volume heading towards king of prussia. the heavier volume is eastbound. the taillights that you see starting to jam up a little bit as you head towards the city. looking at the big picture right now it's westbound on the schuylkill from the boulevard to past belmont, about 28 miles an hour. you could see about the same eastbound as well in that area. 49 miles an hour near girard. the vine is still moving okay at this point. i-95 is the first to jam and that's what we're seeing. that's the area in red here. 15 miles an hour near cottman. just your normal morning volume. live on the vine street expressway you could see we're pretty slow especially westbound heading towards the schuylkill expressway. big accident in montgomery montgomery county mill rode at quarry hill road. someone ran off the road. needed a medevac helicopter. they closed the road for awhile to treat that person. now you may still see restrictions as they have to tow that car out of the woods here mill road at quarry hall road. stick to trooper road as your alternate. pennsylvania turnpike an accident involving two vehicles an tractor-trailer approaching bensalem.
expect isn't delays as you're heading towards bristol and the turnpike connector tam. >> thank you, karen. breaking right now we just learned several people were rescued from that frankford fire while others jumped to safety. again in philadelphia's frankford section. fortunately as of right now everybody has made it out safely. the red cross is there at the scene assisting these people who have been forced out of their homes. "action news" reporter annie mccormick is live now at the scene and gives us the very latest. good morning, annie. >> reporter: good morning, tamala. in that total 12 people were rescued. there's nine injuries and that includes five adults and four children. you can see behind me that this is still an active scene with firefighters still out here. 20 people are now out of their homes. we are told that the red cross is taking care of them. well, take a look at this video. this is video earlier from the scene. we're told that the two alarm fire broke out around 4:00 a.m. here in the 4500 block of frankford. the fire is located in the end of a row with a pizza shop on the bottom about that 10 apartments above.
we're told by firefighters that heavy fire was showing when crews arrived from the second and third floors. deputy fire chief robert corrigan gave a description about how they were able to rescue those people. >> there were reports of multiple victims, multiple people who were trapped inside of this building. companies immediately started aggressive interior firefighting operations to protect the people who were trapped inside the building and also start fundamental making rescues with both ground ladders and aerial ladders as you can see behind me. >> reporter: can you describe to us the rescues what you rolled up here what you saw, were people hanging outside windows. >> when he came up on there were a lot of people at windows and companies were able to immediately place ground ladders and help assist those people to the ground. >> reporter: we're told that some of those people did jump from the windows. right now here live you can see the ladder is still up. you can see those firefighters
out there, some of them are wrapping up. they say that the response was major response. it was two alarms so they had about 75 apparatus -- 20 apparatus rather and about 75 people responding. now, at at this point this is still under investigation. we don't know a cause and we don't know an origin. the fire marshal is on the scene. for that now reporting live in frankford, annie mccormick channel6 "action news." back to you. >> thank you, annie. now to our other breaking story. new jersey state police confirmed overnight that a trooper was among two people killed in a terrible head on crash in millville cumberland county. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live at the port norris barracks where that trooper was stationed. katherine. >> reporter: matt, that's right. trooper frankie williams and another driver died in this crash last night. so far police haven't released a whole lot of details about that other driver. we do know trooper williams was 31 years old when hall killed in the line of duty last night. we're here at the port norris

morning. the road is clear but the crash remains under investigation and at this point it's unclear what caused the driver of the toyota to veer over to the northbound lanes where williams was driving. again, this remains under investigation but this morning new jersey state police mourning the loss of one of their own. we're live in port norris katherine scott, channel6 "action news. >> katherine thanks. trooper williams was the third police officer in new jersey to be killed in a crash in the past year. 30-year-old eli mccarson lost control and struck a utility pole in quinton township salem county one year ago. the new jersey state police lost trooper sean cullen back in march. a car struck and killed the 31-year-old on i-295 while cullen was that responding to an accident in west deptford gloucester county. >> more breaking news this morning. deadly gunfire erupts tap laundromat parking lot. police say someone fired 17 shots at broad and wingohocking streets in philadelphia's logan section just after midnight. a 22-year-old man was killed.

4 o'clock this afternoon. we're expecting one to 3 inches of snow overnight in the poconos but rain for the most part everywhere else. model every now and then brings a little wet snow down through allentown so slow it down if you see that but the big problem traveling will probably be in the poconos. by 11 o'clock tonight cecily will probably be able to show you some off and on showers in through philadelphia so the rain comes in this afternoon and then hangs with us straight through the night. impacts well really nothing this morning. maybe a little sun glare early, that's about the worst of it. then by 1 o'clock an area south will start to see those roads get a little bit wet but it's the evening commute where we really expect things to slow down as matt mentioned because of that rain. 37 degrees by 8 o'clock. 40 degrees by 10 o'clock. your temperatures stay cool today. by noon 44 and then again during the afternoon rain coming up from the south and a high of 48 degrees in philadelphia by 3 o'clock and not much cooler by 5 o'clock. probably the mid 40's there. high temperatures across the region today, 48 in philadelphia f-47 in trenton and wilmington. low 40's in allentown and reading. 45 in lancaster and up to about 50 for millville on down
top the coast. and then overnight tonight more rain but it does start to taper off toward the morning so that by 6 o'clock in the morning we'll probably have just a couple sprinkles and showers. that probably continues through the morning rush hour and then later in the day we're hoping for a little bit of late day sunshine. your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, today sun giving way to clouds and then we get that afternoon rain. look out for one to 3 inches of snow in the poconos overnight and 48 is your high today in philadelphia. tomorrow mostly cloudy, still cool, 52. and then 45 a little cooler on thursday way shower possible especially in the afternoon. we're still looking at that cool down on friday and saturday. highs in the upper 30's. strong blustery winds will make it feel like it's in the 20's. friday could see a snow flurry at times, then saturday sunny but still pretty uncomfortable. increasing clouds on sunday, 42. it will be dry for the eagles game and then monday we're looking at rain although it could start out as a wintry mix in at least some neighborhoods early on monday morning. we'll keep tracking that. matt doesn't like this. >> 6:44, tuesday morning karen rogers what are you watching right now. >> happy tuesday. i'm watching the rotor for you. they're dry at the moment. that rain comes later and they're starting to get a little busy. this is the boulevard here past ninth street in olney and we can see traffic is still moving okay here on the boulevard so no issues from lawncrest or elkins park. we have an update on a couple of accidents out here. we had a big accident on mill road in montgomery county and police have just cleared it so things looking better there and the pennsylvania turnpike an accident involving two cars and a tractor-trailer has just cleared. so now you can see speeds like 60 miles an hour. that's much nicer here eastbound approaching bensalem. how about the travel times for you? starting to slow down in some spots. a jam on 42 northbound an 18 minute ride a.c. expressway to 295. schuylkill still moving about 23, 25 minutes travel time between the blue route and the vine eastbound and westbound. that's not too bad. remember yesterday. it was about 86 minutes so things are better right now on 95 southbound, a 26 minute ride from woodhaven to the vine your usual slow go.

she encountered a plan yelling and pushing her -- man yelling and pushing her son. the man threatened to slit her throat and told her to go back to her country. the suspect in the attack is charged with several hate crimes. elsokary who was born and raised in new york city was honored for saving two people from a fire two years ago. >> i became a police officer to show the positive side of a new yorker, a muslim woman that can do the job, that is nonbiased. i help everybody no matter what's your religion what's your faith. >> in a separate incidents police say a man called that transit worker who is muslim a terrorist and then pushed her down the stairs at grand central terminal t the worker is expected to be okay. >> ♪
