>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning. it's 5:00 a.m. on this tuesday december 20th and we're working on several breaking stories. >> a driver finds an injured woman on the side of a north philadelphia road. police are trying to figure out what happened to her. >> an tragic story out of new jersey. police say a man is on the run after murdering his estranged wife in front of their children. we're live with the latest. >> the chill in the air will stick around for a few more days but accuweather is tracking milder temperatures later this week just in time

for the start of winter. >> well, maybe santa wanted to wear the shades and hawaiian shirt dave murphy and karen rogers. >> it is going to be a little bit milder actually as we head toward the end of the week and perhaps christmas day as well. it's still cold this morning. you can see how cloud cover is beginning to clear the region to the south and we'll see plenty of sunshine but the numbers on the bus stop this morning are pretty raw once again. 21 degrees in philadelphia. still in the teens in trenton, allentown, reading and lancaster. 22 in millville. 20 in wilmington, 25 in cape may. and even though there's not much wind we're still looking at wind chills make, it feel a little extra cold. wind chill of 13 degrees right now in philadelphia so it's winter coats once again today along with some of that extra gear. we'll probably add a few degrees to the thermometer this afternoon but it's still pretty cold. 22 by 7 o'clock, 30 by noon. looking for a high of 37 about 3 o'clock and then back down to 33 by 5 o'clock and 31 by 7 o'clock. karen, things do get milder in the seven day, though. i'll have that story coming up. what about roads early? >> let's check them out for

you right now. we had some construction on the vine street expressway westbound is reopened, eastbound we still have the ramps from the schuylkill eastbound to the vine eastbound shutdown but i think we'll see that open up any minute now. no major problems but we have the collingdale fire we have been talking about. watch for fire department activity. they're out there on broad street at montgomery avenue so instead of broad just stick to woodlawn street as your alternate to that one. we had construction i-95 northbound and southbound and that has since cleared. looking at speeds in the 50's now. outside live on the blue route approaching conshohocken the roads are dry, yes, it's cold out there but no big weather related problems affecting you here so northbound traffic headed towards the schuylkill moving very nicely right now. matt and tam. >> okay, thank you, karen. and breaking overnight a driver passing a vacant lot in northerly made a dramatic discovery finding a woman on the ground with a severe head wound. police say the woman was found lying on the side of the road near the 2700 block of north third street around 11:30 last night. officers rushed her to temple

university hospital. she's currently in critical condition. and police are saying that the victim appears to be in her 40's but that's about all they know so far since they did not find i.d. on the woman. we'll have much more on this story coming up in a live report. and a mother in new jersey is dead, her friends say she spent her life constantly trying to get away from her estranged husband the same man who police now believe to be responsible for her murder. "action news" reporter annie mccormick is live from the state police barracks in bellmawr camden county. good morning, annie. >> reporter: good morning, tamala. and new jersey state police did release a description and also a picture of a man they say is wanted for a homicide that happened yesterday morning in cumberland county. police are looking for this man, 32-year-old jeremiah monell. he's wanted for the murder of his estranged wife. friends of the victim, 36-year-old tara o'shea say for years she suffered abuse at the hands of monell and filed for restraining orders. >> you don't know how many times that she came to my

house beat up. >> reporter: it was just after 8:00 yesterday morning that police say they responded to a home on raymond drive in commercial township cumberland county. there they found the victim unresponsive. according to friends monell slit o'shea's throat in front of their 12-year-old son. state police released information about monell late last night but before that those close to o'shea were looking for him. they say they want justice for their friend. they describe o'shea as a fighter. >> for her to get that final restraining order say enough is enough, she'd had enough and that's what i praise her for because she had had enough. >> he needs to be caught. he needs to be punished for what he did to these kids ton her and her family. >> reporter: and the description released by new jersey state police they describe monell as 5-foot nine, 140 pounds and they say he's probably driving a chevrolet s-10 pickup. if you have any information contact new jersey state police.

germany. >> it's really sad. it's a great time of year for families and it's just sad to see something like that happening. >> very unfortunate. i feel very bad. again, my prayers and condolences go out to the family and the friends of the people who were affected by that tragedy. >> it is very sad. it makes you want to squeeze your little one a little bit tighter. >> "action news" reached out keepers at the christmas village. they declined to comment. >> the electoral college has officially made donald trump the next president with well over the 270 electoral votes he needed and despite last ditch efforts. the process marks the end of the traditional election cycle. trump passed the needed threshold when elections in texas voted. there were protests and even a few electors who cast votes for colin powell instead as a last minute swipe at trump but trump prevailed ensuring he'll become america's 45th president. congress needs to counter and certify the electoral votes. vice president joe biden as

president of the senate supervises that on january 6th. >> it is 5:06 and new on "action news" a funding fight in harrisburg has left hundreds of state employees without a job. senate republicans did not vote on a funding bill so governor tom wolf's administration cut about 520 jobs and closed three unemployment compensation call centers to address the $58 million budget hole. nearly 100 of these employees are from allentown. officials say the total number of layoffs may end up being slightly smaller however. some workers say they plan on retiring while others are being placed in other positions. >> sometimes mother nature likes to be a contrarian. >> i know. >> like today winter. >> and then tomorrow winter arrives. >> we are looking at a milder trend but we deserve it right. >> sure. >> despite what the calendar says. storm tracker6 live double scan right now shows us that we are dry this morning and as we take a look outside a lack of cloud cover, lots of sun getting ready to come up over the horizon. there's sky6 looking south on broad from temple university

and well, it's cold this morning but at least it's going to be dry. 21 degrees currently in philadelphia. 14 degrees in allentown. 16 in reading. 17 in trenton. 20 in wilmington and 22 in millville so obviously it is another morning for winter coats at least. there's not a lot of wind out there. and lots of sun on the way. you could see clouds continuing to push farther and farther to the south. right now we've still got them in southern delaware but in another half hour we're going to be done probably and 19 southern delaware you'll see sunshine. up in the lehigh valley today, lots of sun. still chilly, a high of 36 degrees and there will be just a tad enough wind to probably give you wind chills in the upper 20's this afternoon up in the lehigh valley. at the shore getting up to 41, lots of sun, still cool, so you'll want your jacket and your coat there as well but not too bad temperature-wise and in philadelphia, we'll bump that number up about 3 degrees over yesterday. we're going for a high of 37 degrees, mostly sunny, still chilly and winds a bit lighter only about four to 8 miles per hour. overnight tonight it's cold but not as cold as this morning.

28 degrees the overnight low under partly cloudy skies and winds remaining on the light side. and then tomorrow morning winter arrive at 5:44 a.m., almost here, tomorrow's when it officially happens and with the winter solstice that means tomorrow will be the day that has the few west hours of daylight and then we start extending that daylight a little bit after that start on thursday. so, we're turning the corner in terms of the amount of sunlight that we're getting and tomorrow's high as matt mentioned with the first afternoon of winter will actually be a little bit better than today and yesterday. we'll get up to 43 degrees and then a frontal boundary comes in from the west that actually helps get us even milder. your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, today still cold, a high of 37 degrees, not all that windy, lots of sun. tomorrow winter arrives in the morning, in the afternoon sun and clouds, 43. and then thursday clouds with some sunny breaks, a high of 47. looks like it's probably dry now on thursday for the eagles game at night. and then sunny with a gusty breeze on friday a-46. saturday, christmas eve and

drive. if you're in exton chester county we're looking pretty good. no major issues out there coming from phoenixville or chester springs. we see people on route 100 moving okay. the roads are dry. it's just cold but no weather related problems today so that's good news. here in upper gwynedd township we have bridge repair valley forge road between morris road and hunting hill drive it's closed week nights from 9 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. and that's going to last until the beginning of january, january 6th. you'll be dealing with this a little while longer. stick to broad street as your alternate. also over here in lower merion you can see the street sign, the action cam was out and about sprague road at hollow road and we've got a problem here. they're doing some sewer repair right now and they're closing the road. you see they've got the road closed, a portion of sprague road not a very long portion but nonetheless if you're driving around lower merion you're going to deal with this. stick to haguey's ford road

instead of sprague road. sang sam 1961 talking about an accident on county line road in montgomeryville. whenever i don't know what the words are i get very informs i tell them to tell people to make sure it's nothing bad but i don't think so. let's take a look at the temperatures right now. yesterday we were saying how cold it was. today it's colder this morning at least. 8 degrees in martins creek, the temperature. 10 degrees in pottstown, 13 coatesville. a little better in center city, 21 but it's only 19 glassboro, new jersey, tam. >> okay, thank you, karen. police say a woman deliberately slammed her car into a police cruiser of all things in ohio. take a look. >> we just got hit out here. >> so what you're watching is video from the police officer's body camera showing the moment his patrol car was rammed. this happened earlier this month on interstate 76. the officer was writing a ticket when an suv randomly crossed at least one lane and rammed into the driver's side of the patrol car. police say they later

discovered the woman insides was suicidal and deliberately crashed into that patrol car and amazingly no one was hurt. >> a perfect marriage proposal in new york city had a scary ending. connor rasmussen new from washington state to nyc to propose to his girlfriend jordan asher. he popped the question friday night in central park. then this happened to rasmus 70 manhattan early sunday morning. >> dropped me off at my hotel. walking back to their hotel then wanted to get some pizza next to it and as he was walking back a man just came up lined them and stabbed him in the back of his head. >> rasmussen removed the knife himself and handed it over to police. somehow he wasn't seriously hurt but police believe the attack here was not caught was hurt. they also say the attack appears random. >> north carolina's controversial bathroom bill could be repealed in matter of days. state lawmakers there will

meet tomorrow to consider eliminating house bill two. the bill requires transgender sit stones use the bathroom of the gender they were assigned at birth not their chosen gender. yesterday the charlotte city council voted to repeal the bill. house bill two was passed earlier this year and it has resulted in high profile business and entertainment boycotts in the state of national hurricane center. the california judge in that high profile sexual assault case has been cleared of misconduct. thousands of complaints poured in earlier this year about judge aaron per scheme he oversaw the case of stanford student brock turner the swimmer convicted of raping an unconscious woman outside of a party. perskie sparked outrage when he sen owns at the turner to just six months in jail. thought it was too lenient. in yesterday's ruling the panel said there was not clear or convincing evidence that perskie showed bias or abuse of authority. >> flyers are trying get back on track at home. they had won 10 straight until

losing to the dallas stars on saturday. last night andrew mcdonald got the flyers on the board in the first period against the predator. that lead held until midway through the third. the flyers lost in a shootout two to one dropping their second straight. they host the capitals tomorrow night. eagles right tackle lane johnson will start thursday against the giants. johnson was reinstated yesterday after serving a 10 game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing drugs. it's unclear if johnson is even in shape but coach doug pederson says injuries have left him with no choice. he'd be fifth starter at that position, so it's sort of like a numbers game. you just don't have anyone else. >> 5:18a news week reporter pursuing legal action after claiming that a tweet caused him to have a seizure. >> a gender based study of doctors finds that if your physician is a woman you get a better shot at health and life. >> ♪

[laughter] >> hard for you. let's get through it together. this is the schuylkill approaching belmont. westbound traffic on your left headed towards king of prussia moving nicely. at least i come bearing good news. mass transit no issues. however you might remember we had two hour delays with the lines yesterday, dave. they had some problems. so far so good is what we can say with mass transit. >> green on those graphics is good, right. >> yes. >> see, i'm thinking. all right 21 degrees 6 o'clock temperature on the bus stop it's going to be pretty cold this morning. 22 by 8 o'clock. not a lot of wind but definitely bundle those kids up in the extra gear and keep them bundled this afternoon because even though it's not very windy we are staying in the 30's. here's where numbers are going to go in case you're headed to the market. 22 degrees by 7 o'clock. maybe stay home for 7 o'clock and by noon 30 degrees but by 3 o'clock we will get up to 37 for a high. again not a lot of wind chill to talk about because winds are so light. by 5 o'clock you're back chose to the freezing mark and by 7 o'clock below freezing. and a quick look at the airport.
