5:00 a.m., monday march 20. we have breaking news right now. a philadelphia police officer who was attacked by a suspect in the northeast. >> brand new, drivers won't be able to use the express lanes at the busy mid county toll plaza we have the why and how long coming up. these men were burglarizing a dozen stores, but they were not going after the cash. >> a plane lands in atlantic city with a smoke filled cockpit. >> the first day of spring, david murphy will look at that, karen rogers will have the

traffic. >> reporter: it is a decent start to spring, a little cold, so you'll want winter coats. we have a lack of cloud cover. temperature, 36 degrees in philadelphia. 33 in allentown. just below the freezing mark in reading and 39 in cape may. there's not much wind out there, but just enough to make it feel a tad below the freezing mark. a winter jacket not a bad idea. 37 degrees by 7:00 a.m. rather cool by noon, 45 degrees, we'll climb to 50 degrees later this afternoon. i expect a high of 51 to clock in right around there, say, 3:30 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. today marks the arrival of spring. it officially comes in at 6:29 a.m. this morning. we're looking at increasing daylight this time of year, the temperatures are starting to nudge up, in fact it will be milder tomorrow, karen, i'll

have the details on that in just a couple of seconds. >> reporter: we have an early morning accident in new jersey, crews on the scene in willingboro, blocking all lanes 130 southbound at cooper street. that's a big area in burlington county. southbound is blocked, northbound they are blocking two lanes there. a billing accident in new jersey, in willingboro, blocking lanes in both directions on 130 southbound, stick to mlk drive. schuylkill expressway we're seeing a backup eastbound at gulph mills, this is the problem, we have construction crews blocking a lane, this will last until 6:00 a.m., they are having trouble merging, too, that's adding to the delay. schuylkill expressway eastbound blocking a lane already backed up watch for that on the big picture. let's check out another issue, 611 old york road construction in abington blocking a lane, here, as well.

42 dry and clear for now, matt and tam. >> thank you, karen. breaking right now out of the wynnfield heights section, police are on the scene of a deadly crash. a car crashed into a pole after 2:00 a.m. near ford road and belmont avenue. one person was killed. there's no word on what caused that crash. drivers who use the e-z pass lanes to go through the mid county toll plaza might be hitting the brakes this morning. northbound side and southbound side are closed so upgrades can be made to the electronic equipment. katherine scott is live outside with a closer look hey, katherine. >> reporter: hey matt you could see slow downs over the neck couple of -- next couple of weeks, there are crews in place to start the upgrades. while this is going on you'll be able to use the traditional e-z

pass lanes, these closures affect drivers on i-476 using express e-z pass lanes at the mid county toll plaza. they officially closed last evening at 6:00 p.m. those lanes are supposed to remain closed for three weeks so crews can upgrade the overhead electronic tolling equipment for open road tolling. thisthis is the first phase of e project. the project is expected to be complete september of next year, as for this phase involving the e-z pass express lanes they should just be closed for three weeks. as we head out this morning, you will see digital signs along the highway alerting drivers of lane closures, i know we passed several of those this morning. if all goes as planned, the

lanes reopen april 6 at 10:00 p.m. all the crews are mobilizing and getting ready for the three weeks of repair. katherine scott channel 6 "action news." >> now we want to go to breaking news out of northeast philadelphia, a police officer attacked on the job by a suspect. "action news" reporter, jeanette reyes is live on the scene on academy road, good morning, jeanette. >> reporter: good morning, tam we're seeing quite a bit of activity right now. police are searching for the man behind the attack on a philadelphia police officer. we're right behind the wawa of the 400 block of academy road. police were investigating a possible robbery. the incident was -- the officer was attacked, the police are

300 yards away from us, they are clustered around two different scenes, we see police tape up right now him they are investigating and trying to track down the suspect. we are told the officers suffered injuries to his head, but he is in stable condition. we are waiting to get some additional information. this is, of course, a developing situation as soon as we get more information we'll pass it along to you. reporting live in northeast, jeanette reyes channel 6 "action news." tam. >> we'll check in with you soon, jeanette, thank you. an investigation is underway into a massive fight at a septa subway station in center city. the allout brawl was caught on camera happening at the race vine station. police are look hoping people will take a look and find the people involved. authorities are not sure what caused the fight. two men are under arrest in delaware accused of burglarizing

a dozen stores. police arrested berdell and his friend. they would take cartons of cigarettes with the value of theft reaching $23,000. scary moments aboard a military cargo plane that landed at atlantic city national airport. there was smoke in the cabin after the plane landed after midnight. nobody was hurt, investigators are trying to determine where the smoke came from. >> happening today, the former president of penn state will be back in court facing charges related to the jerry sandusky scandal relating to how he responded to complaints against sandusky. the university commission report included that span spaniard and

we'll call for sun in the lehigh valley, relatively light winds today 50 degrees. she shore, light winds and sun mixing with clouds and high of 51 with the wind running out of the northwest fairly light overnight. overnight tonight, clouds get thicker we see sprinkles and showers popping through in the overnight hours and future tracker 6 suggesting perhaps a little bit more of this as we move into tomorrow morning. it's a cloudy start as well. we expect the clouds to filter out and later in the day the return of sunshine. tomorrow will be milder, 40 degrees is the overnight low. more clouds, spotty showers, this low is not as cool as this morning, of course. tomorrow afternoon we're all the way up to 59 degrees for the high. there is cooler air lurking off to the north and west for wednesday, but it does look like

blocking southbound and two lanes northbound and all lanes southbound 130 at cooper in burlington county, new jersey, watch for that. here's a live look at i-95 so far so good this morning that's the southbound traffic heading toward center city and moving nicely. how about the temperatures on this first day of spring. it's chilly in the morning, 26 degrees in martins creek, cold in quakertown, 30. pottstown, 30. saint davids you're above the freezing mark, 36 in center city. 32 in browns mills, 29 in vineland and 36 degrees in dover, delaware. a good moment of sunshine, heading up to 51. you can't beat that today. >> watch as a driver comes to the rescue after a serious crash in south florida. you can see the man carrying a baseball bat which he used to break the window of the jeep. the driver passed out and slammed into the wall. the tires started to smoke,

let's get weather and traffic with david and karen. >> reporter: all right, everybody we're off to a clear start all the cloud cover back by pittsburgh, it's possible some of this pops up during the day, but generally speaking we're looking at a bright one today. 36 degrees in philadelphia. close to the freezing mark in allentown, reading and wilmington. 39 degrees in cape may. even though the winds are light, we're looking at windchills that makes it feel like below the freezing mark in both neighborhoods. grab the winter coat on the way out today, even though this afternoon you may be able to unzip it and not go as heavy on the gear. 45 degrees by noon. for a while we sit on or about 50. we're going for a high of 51 degrees, we'll hit that around 3:30 p.m. we mark the arrival of spring at 6:29 a.m. what's that? about an hour from now.
