>> ♪ "action news." delaware valley's leading news program with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning, it's 4:30 now on this wednesday november 22nd. >> we're following breaking news. a u.s. navy plane carrying 11 people crashes in the pacific ocean. >> the roads rails and skies will be crowded today as more travelers head on out for the thanksgiving holiday. >> storm tracker6 is tracking some early rain making the roads potentially wet for the morning commute. >> we have team coverage of your holiday rush. >> karen rogers is tracking the roads and meteorologist, david murphy has the travel forecast so now that we're

altogether, let us celebrate. >> let's do it. [laughter] >> all right. rain fortunately is moving away from the i-95 corridor. there's one little blip, go ahead to the weather center and we may get caught with a little bit of this stuff starter starter out to the west. the majority to the east and it finally pushes offer the off the coast. all of this moving pretty much up to the northeast and sliding a little bit to the east. that batch of showers in baltimore, we're keeping an eye on that because that might get a little bit closer to philadelphia before we're done. temperatures mild this morning. 53 degrees in philadelphia. getting cooler in the northern and western suburbs, though, as cooler air is on the way in. 36 degrees in allentown, 39 in reading. 54 in millville. and we're thinking that number in philadelphia may add about 3 degrees and then start to crash as we go through the afternoon. so, we'll go for 52 at 7:00. by noon a chance of still being at about 55 but by

3 o'clock down to 50 maybe the 40's by then and 46 degrees by 5 o'clock. you can see how quickly that change curse. as we take a little look ahead to thanksgiving it is looking like a pretty nice one this year, chilly but sunny, which is good and as we take a look at the forecast, mostly sunny, winds are light. 9 o'clock 37 degrees. by 3 o'clock, 46 and that is going to be your high tomorrow so bundle up for the parade but generally speaking dry conditions. karen, i'll have more from accuweather going in through thanksgiving, the parade forecast coming up and then of course that shoppers forecast for friday. >> yes, and i like how the dog just sits by your feet there. what a good pooch. liking outside live on the schuylkill expressway we're watchingly roads carefully and we're seeing no problems just yet. they're a little wet. this is the schuylkill at south street. westbound traffic heading towards the vine we still see construction out there right now, it's blocking the right lane so you've got the cone out there but it should be clear relatively soon. on the boulevard extension

there's your southbound traffic heading towards the schuylkill. ahead on the ramp from the boulevard southbound to the schuylkill westbound we had overnight construction and stopping all traffic at times so you want to watch for that. also that ramp is now narrowed around the clock so that's new that you're dealing with on this busy travel day. yesterday they blocked this ramp for over half an hour so we'll be watching for that to see these stoppages and how that could impact you but overall as we look at the big picture, no major problems as we watch the roads carefully on this very busy travel day, matt and tam. >> thank you, karen. more people are expected to fly to their thanksgiving destinations this year. >> let's go to "action news" reporter jeanette reyes live at philadelphia international airport. it sounds a little busy, jeanette. >> reporter: oh, yeah, it sounds and looks a little busy, matt and tam. it's actually a lot busier than i expected. take a live look behind me. the lines are long. it is moving along pretty smoothly.

now, over 50 million travelers will be hitting the roads and skies for thanksgiving. this year the number of people traveling will break a 12-year record. philadelphians are no exception to that trend. about 600,000 of us will travel more than 50 miles this holiday. with that said, you can expect some traffic congestion of course. that will be pretty miserable at times. but there are ways to plan your trip around and try to minimize your time stuck on the road. the worst travel period is usually between 3:00 p.m. and as late as 7:00 in the evening with heavy traffic making the trip up to two and three times longer. here at the airport, philadelphia international airport, you'll see more foot traffic at check in and security points. nearly 400 passengers will be departing from this airport. air travel is up 3 percent compared to last year and aaa says this is all mostly due t consumer confidence. >> we're seeing a strong economy. we're seeing a rebounding labor market. that means increases in

paychecks and increases in consumer confidence and people are willing to spend their money on holiday travel. >> reporter: and i like to say use today as kind of a practice period. it's going to be the busiest on sunday so if you find that you are running behind today, make sure you get out even earlier on sunday. again, it's expected to be even busier, so prepare for that but it should be overall i say a pretty good travel period here. reporting live at philadelphia international airport, jeanette reyes, channel6 "action news." matt and tam. >> jeanette you don't want your sundays to ruin your mondays or vice versa. let's switch to katherine scott live at 30th street station. >> and katherine, you know, when the train is coming people start to pool at the top of the stairs and they're a little flustered and nervous. today there will be even more of that intensity because people definitely want to get to their destination. >> reporter: they do. they want to get to their destination so make sure you leave plenty of time but you know those lines do start to

stretch. not right now, though. things are looking good here at 30th street station. it's still early, nice and quiet but here at 30th, they are certainly preparing for a surge of holiday travelers. right now the trains on the board are posting on time and amtrak isn't anticipating any major weather challenges so let's hope it stays that way. thirtieth street station is amtrak's third busiest station nationally. they operate roughly 120 trains per day in pennsylvania with more than 6 million riders but they're adding trains at their major hubs to accommodate all these holiday travelers. last year during their thanksgiving travel period amtrak carried more than 760,000 customers and they're expecting it to be similar this year. some are passing through 30th for more local travel. others are getting out of state. >> i'm going to spend a lot of time with my dog. and my family i guess. >> yeah. >> we flew up from texas and we are visiting family in

south jersey so we jump on the train to go to philly today to do independence hall liberty bell and the whole south philly experience. >> reporter: and the holiday rush has already started here. it started yesterday. a lot of people came through 30th street station on tuesday. today expect another busy one. again, leave plenty of extra time so you don't feel flustered as you're boarding. live at 30 30th street station katherine scott. >> near city avenue according to aaa that looks pretty good right now but i did notice a lot more activity when i came in. a lot of people thinking leave at 3 a.m. according to aaa 530,000 people from our area will hit the road for that holiday. that number up by 3.5 percent from last year. aaa is expecting the busiest holiday weekend traffic since 2005 and karen is going to be back in a few minutes with an update on the traffic across

the area. and if you're going to drive, you need gas. if you plan to fill up before you hit the roads. here's what you can expect to pay. the national average is $2.53 a gallon. in philadelphia it's a little higher, dollars 75 a gallon. for south jersey the price is $2.50 and in delaware the average is $2.48 a gallon. >> keep up with any changes to the thanksgiving travel forecast including realtime views from storm storm tracker6. use or download the free 6abc app. >> and here's a story that's breaking that we've got our eye closely on. a navy aircraft carrying 11 crew and passengers has crashed into the pacific ocean. the navy says the plane was headed to the aircraft carrier u.s.s. ronald reagan in the philippine sea. eight people on board have been found but it's unclear whether they were found alive or not. stay with "action news" and for updates. >> police are investigating the violent death of a man whose body was found slumped

in a car at a shopping center in montgomery county. a passerby discovered the victim and called police just before 6:00 p.m. on monday on the 400 block of ridge road in plymouth township. surveillance video here shows the incident unfolding in the parking lot. two men are seen running away from a buick lacrosse, then the car rolls across the pavement and comes to a stop against a parked car with the man inside slumped over. police are still trying to identify the man in the video. >> it's 4:39 now. another philadelphia landmark lights up for the holidays today. >> president trump seems to have changed his mind about the alabama senate candidate who is facing multiple claims of sexual misconduct. >> dozens of john lennon's items stolen from yoko ono are finally recovered. david. >> we're looking at a little rain this morning especially over by the coast. storm tracker6 live double scan showing that to you. there's another batch down by baltimore that might try and creep up the i-95 corridor later this morning but generally speaking it's clouds to sun and we have a mainly

>> happening today, the philadelphia museum of art will shine a little brighter. a tree lighting celebration takes place at 5:00 on the east terrace. the 54-foot white fir arrived from new york last week and was decorated with 10,000 lights and topped with a star. you can watch the tree lighting live right here on "action news." >> prethanksgiving forecast with david. >> how about it? all right, it's raining out there especially down in south jersey. if we take a closer look you can see this creeping up the coast and there's another batch of rain south on i-95 coming up from baltimore. that probably clips philadelphia and some of our northern and western suburbs. as we go through the morning rush hour. as we take a look outside, we have sky6, fair amount of clouds out there with that possible second rain or little

batch of shower activity coming up the delaware river near the commodore barry bridge. but it does look like we're generally going to be drying out fairly quickly probably toward the end of the rush hour, even down the shore. 53 degrees currently in philadelphia. we're starting out mild. winds out of the south at just 6 miles per hour so not all that breezy. and future tracker6 showing that you this rain does have a tendency to filter over toward the coast by about 9, 10 o'clock. it doesn't look like it's going to be a whole lot of rain, although in south jersey and delaware there could be a steady downpour that happens briefly in some areas. and then the sun comes back later today. temperatures today are going to be a little bit unusual in that we're going to surge up by noon to about 55 degrees. then the numbers plunge and by dinnertime we're down to 45 degrees. if you look at these highs these are around lunchtime maybe a little after and up north probably even earlier than that, maybe late this morning as the cool air is coming in from the northwest. about 51 in allentown and reading, 56 in philadelphia and millville. 55 in wilmington, 54 in

trenton and 55 in cape may. if you're traveling today, again, that rain gets out of the way pretty quickly, so if you have to drive out toward pittsburgh or maybe up to new york state, maybe a little snow shower up in the poconos or new york state but that's about it. pretty much dry conditions all the way down into northern florida. and back in the midwest again maybe a little flurry or a light snow shower around detroit but everybody else is looking colder out there in the great lakes but not bad travel-wise. for thanksgiving, we are looking at sunshine roaring back but it will be chilly with a high of just 46 degrees. winds will be light so we do expect the parade to feature balloons this year. we won't have to worry about the balloons downing those. and as we take a look at the forecast overall look for lots of sun tomorrow, winds light but only 34 degrees at 8 o'clock, 39 by 10 o'clock and then getting into the into the low 40's by noon. your seven-day from accuweather, today's high 56 degrees but again that number will be dropping during the afternoon. sunny and chilly thanks with a

high of 46. black friday 34 at dawn and 50 in the afternoon. saturday partly sunny and milder, a high of 58. going to be a little shower or sprinkle around later in the day or at night and then sunday brisk and cooler. we'll bring these numbers up a little bit. we're going to go 52 for the eagles game in the afternoon but it still will be brisk and chilly and a pop-up shower on sunday. 47 on monday. so, chilly monday but not too bad. >> maybe a bounceback on tuesday. >> yeah, uh-huh. >> thank you david. president trump came very close to endorsing royal in the race for the u.s. senate seat in alabama. the president was leaving for thanksgiving in mar-a-lago go yesterday when he seemed to discount claims of sexual assault against moore which include the molestation of 14-year-old girl. >> he totally denies it. he says it didn't happen. and, you know, you have to listen to him, also. i can tell you one thing for sure. we don't need a liberal person

in there, a democrat. >> a reporter then asked is it better to have an accused child molester than a democrat? president trump responded that moore's opponent doug jones is bad on law and order, bad on the border, bad on the second amendment. jones and moore will face off during the special election on december 12th to fill the old seat of current attorney general jeff sessions. a second woman has come forward accusing congressman john conyers of persistent sexual harassment n a document filed with u.s. district court the michigan democrat's former scheduler claims that she suffered unwanted touching repeatedly and daily at the hands of conyers. the 88-year-old denied a report monday that he sexually harassed another female aide which led to a five figure payout funded by taxpayers. >> 70's teen heart throb david cassidy has died. he became famous as a teenager playing keith partridge on the partridge family and to go on

selling millions of records as the lead singer. he announced he was suffering from dementia and was ending his 50 year career. he passed away at a florida hospital surrounded by his family. david cassidy was 67 years old. >> ♪ >> and new this morning, police recovered around a hundred items that belonged to late beatles star john lennon. that included two pairs of his metal rimmed glasses three diaries and a handwritten music score. someone stole the items from yoko ono's home. police arrested the man in german and a man in tokyo. police say ono was very emotional when she discovered they were recovered. >> ikea recalls a piece of furniture after a child's death. dang.

shortly. let's check some of your other roads like the schuylkill where we've got the left lane blocked at the boulevard, schuylkill approaching the boulevard left lane is blocked there and that should be cleared pretty shortly as well, so we've got construction out there on the schuylkill and there you can see, so the schuylkill looking for that approaching the boulevard with construction westbound heading towards center city in the process of clearing out right now. how about delaware county? we'll take a live look at i-95 right now near kerlin street. construction is clear. all lanes opened. it's looking a lot better right now on i-95 but not everywhere. we have problems out here. here's a new accident in tinicum township delaware county. it's an accident involving an overturned vehicle. we're hearing there are injuries on the scene on hog island road at tinicum island road so watch out for emergency workers there, matt. >> thank you, karen. a new report claims dangerous toys that pose a hazard to children are being sold at dollar stores big box stores and online.

pirg warns those hazards include data collecting toys, choking hazards, toxic substances overheating toys and excessively loud toys. >> she interacts with the child and hooks up to a bluetooth which is connected to not a very safe secure connection. >> to avoid choking hazards pirg saying remember this simple rule if a toy fits into a toilet paper roll keep it away from children under three. >> now it's time to take your first look at business. ikea reissued a recall for 29 million of its chests and dressers after the death of an eighth child. the toddler was killed in california by a malm dresser that fell over. ikea says the furniture can tip over if it's not anchor towed a wall. you need to get that kit where you fasten night a wall. questions are raised about whether or not ikea did enough to inform consumers about that

recall when it was announced in june of 2016. big gains on tuesday. the dow jones was up 160 points at the closing bell. this morning futures seem to point to a mixed open. you will have a little bit more time to grab a bottle of wine or alcohol this holiday season as state stores in pa many stores will be opening earlier and staying opened later and stores in rural communities will be opened on days they're usually closed. the new hours will take effect through the month of december. we'll be right back. >> ♪

. >> ride hailing service uber admits it covered up a year old data breach. hackers stole personal information of more than 57 million uber customers and drivers. uber's new ceo says the company paid the hackers $100,000 to destroy the stolen information. he says there has been no evidence the stolen data went on to be misused. drivers whose driver licenses were compromised will receive free credit monitoring and identity theft protection. the company also fired its chief security officer. >> a temple university grad is the first student from the school to win the most prestigious academic honor in the world. hazim hardeman is among the 32 american recipients of the rhodes scholarship which were announced on sunday. hardeman was raised by a single mother in north philadelphia and admits he struggled in high school. he said he didn't have the grades to make it into temple but earned a associate's degree from philadelphia community college before going
