world, we give back and we help each other in need. >> she just came just like an angel god sent her to us. >> reporter: derrick ward, news4. joo the goal is to help the family pay rent for a year while they try to get back on the feet. open the nbc washington app for ways to help. just search working for you in quotations. moving now to the weather. so we've got warnings, we've got advisories in effect for much of the region. so where is the greatest impact, amelia? >> if you're under a winter storm warning this is where you will see more snow and potentially more ice. you can see the winter storm warning will be for counties back to the west. frederick, loudoun, northern fauquier counties in the bright pink. this winter storm warning will start tonight very late and run through early tuesday morning. winter weather advisory in effect for the entire d.c. and baltimore metro areas. this also begins late tonight and runs through tuesday morning. again, more serious isth

everybody will see snow moving in tonight. that transitions to a wintry mix tomorrow afternoon and continues into the evening hours. in general the area will see about 2 to 5 inches of snow and up to, not guaranteed, but up to a quarter of an inch of ice, and with that much ice we could be tracking power outages across the area. because of tomorrow's weather, high impact on your day. you want to avoid travel and, again, that snow changing over to sleet and freezing rain during the afternoon hours. here is the latest on storm team four radar. we are getting reports of snow hitting the ground in west virginia where you're seeing it on radar. so this storm right now is cooking. if it continues to travel at this speed, here are impact times. fredericksburg seeing snow around 8:50. washington at 9:30. wap dor waldorf at 9:30 as well. everybody is seeing snow by 2:00 a.m. tomorrow at lunchtime around noon, the metro still snow. areas north and west, still snow. the pink is already that wintry mix in parts of the northern ne

prolonged sleet and freezing rain. 3:00 we're still seeing areas of pink in the d.c. metro area at that point. future weather already wants to bring in rain to southern maryland by 5:00 p.m. still tracking potentially ice falling in parts of the metro area and up around fed rick ared loudoun counties. and then potentially a dry period. temperatur temperatures warm overnight. the ground is so cold from the last few days that i'm still concerned about those more rural areas seeing icy spots and bridges and overpasses could still be slick tuesday morning everywhere. that includes washington. we see rain falling throughout the day on tuesday, potentially some moderate to heavy rain at times. snowfall forecast by tomorrow night, one to three inches in southern maryland and parts of the northern neck but most of the area picking up three to five inches. higher amounts in the higher elevations around the i-81

we could see very little ice potentially in the metro area, and then down toward the south and east. maybe a tenth of an inch and a coating to a quarter of an inch of ice if you are under that winter storm warning. so a heads up for that. i'm more concerned about the ice and the snow, but as the snow moves in, it sticks immediately because it's so cold. the iciest time period is from 1:00 p.m. tomorrow until 9:00 p.m. tomorrow. some slick spots are still possible tuesday morning. temperatures warm throughout the day tomorrow, so by tuesday morning we're talking about a temperature around 33 and an afternoon high of 51. then, erika, quieter weather after that. next weekend, highs around 60 dloutio degrees. >> we need it. still ahead, john wall respect to represent for the wizards

out and practicing and enjoying that moment in the game, enjoying that moment. so the competitiveness in terms of me trying to establish something or prove something, that's gone. college basketball now. maryland had their 27-game home win streak snapped yesterday to wisconsin, but everyone is talking about this play from the freshman diamond stone. you see him push the wisconsin player's head to the ground. stone was given a technical not a flagrant two. the badgers took it to the terps from the opening tip. trimble was just 1 for 14 from the feed. maryland back at it again thursday against minnesota. >> 22-4, okay? we've had a good year. every team goes through it, okay? this is really probably the biggest adversity we've hit because we lost a home game. so we'll see how we

maryland hold on to win this game. final score 79-70. to the smith center. gw hosting dayton. second quarter. gw is up five. the bucket and the foul. she had 16 points. later in the third, it's a three-point game. brianna cumming, nice shot there. gw take this one 72-62. moving on to hockey. it was a rough night for the capitals. they were trying to do something they haven't done since october 25th of 2008, and that's beat dallas. the best team in the west. they gave the caps all they could handle. we haven't seen much bad hockey from the capitals at all this season but against the stars, they had their worst period of the entire year allowing dallas to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the second period. this group didn't go away quietly. three goals in the third head it an interesting game but not enough to come up with the

good evening. the unexpected death of u.s. supreme court justice antonin scalia is reshaping the 2016 race for the white house. only three supreme court justices have died in office in more than 60 years, and only one has been confirmed during an election year since 1940. some gop presidential hopefuls are questioning president obama's established executive authority to nominate a replacement during this election season. however, the president has already said it will happen but in due time. kelly o'donnell is at the white house tonight and starts us off. >> reporter: today the silent display of respect across washington. but no pause before

[ applause ] >> reporter: an instant power struggle over a successor to justice scalia. >> let me just make one point -- barack obama is president of the united states until january 20th, 2017. >> good evening, everybody -- >> reporter: president obama made clear he will nominate a new justice and expects the senate to consider his choice fairly. >> these are responsibilities that i take seriously, as should everyone. they're bigger than any one party. they are about our democracy. >> reporter: if the president gets to seat his third just, that change would make -- third justice, that change would make the court more liberal. compounding the shock of scalia's sudden passing is the timing. a campaign year. >> we ought to make the 2016 election a referendum on the supreme court. >> reporter: republican candidate ted cruz had been a

law clerk for justice rehnquist. now as a senator, he intends to block any obama nominee. >> we're advising that a lame duck president in an election year is not going to be able to tip the balance of the supreme court. >> reporter: democrats are already calling out cruz. >> ted cruz holds the constitution when he walks through the halls of congress. let him show me the clause that says the president's only president for three years. >> reporter: with fewer senate votes, democrats may have to take their fight for an obama court pick to the campaign trail, as well. >> i just don't think it looks good that for very overtly political reasons that the republicans would deny this president the right to exercise his constitutional responsibility which is to appoint members to the supreme court. >> reporter: for some gop candidates and republican senators, their opposition goes beyond the idea of simply voting down anyone the president might choose. they say there should be no confirmation process, no vetting,

no hearing, no vote at all. thank you. and the death of just scalia also raises questions about how the court might decide a number of key cases this term from abortion rights to affirmative action. we get more on scalia's death and its impact from our justice correspondent, pete williams. >> reporter: as in the rest of the nation, justice scalia's death is being mourned in texas where he died saturday at this guest ranch popular with fellow bird hunters of an apparent heart attack. >> he had obviously passed away with no difficulty at all, middle of the night. it was -- that was our first message for the family. >> reporter: a catholic priest from a nearby church was summoned to administer last rites. justice scalia's colleagues on the court praised a towering intellect. ruth bader ginsburg said, "we were best buddies," adding, "he had a rare talent to make even a sober judge laugh." clarence thomas said, "it is hard to imagine court without my friend. i will miss him baund

all measure." ideological lines on big cases, justice scalia's death leaves eight justices and the possibility of tie votes 4-4. >> if there's a tie, there's no outcome at the supreme court. the lower court ruling stands. it's as if the supreme court never heard the case. >> reporter: a tie vote would leave rulings intact that block president obama's plan to let five million undocumented migrants stay here. a tie would mean the tough new texas restrictions on abortion would remain, possibly inspiring other states to enact similar laws. a tie would be a boost to the financial strength of unions representing teachers and other public employees. if a democratic president appointed a successor to the conservative scalia, that would tilt the court the other way to a majority of liberal justices. >> if president obama were able to put another justice on the court, he would cement a leftist majority on the court for the next generation or so. >> reporter: among

potential nominees mentioned in legal circles, sri srisrinivasan, indian american, patricia millet on the d.c. court of appeals, and paul wattford from california. the justices will be back on the bench for n a week and will face the prospect of finishing without a full court for the first time in more than 50 years. peter? >> pete williams reporting for us at the supreme court. thank you. the death of scalia and emerging battle over choosing and confirming the next justice, the republican presidential candidates were questioned about a number of other key and divisive issues in their debate last night in south carolina. as gabe gutierrez reports, it was their most combative debate so far. >> justice antonin scalia -- >> reporter: after a moment of silence for justice scalia came the most contentious gop debate so far. >> they lied. >> just been telling lies -- >> why do you supply. >> liar, liar, liar. >> reporter: the words "liar" or some

[ boos ] >> reporter: marco rubio trying to rebound from his last debate came to bush's defense today blaming 9/11 on bill clinton's decision tnot to take out bin laden. >> it allowed isis to prosper and by 2001 have the ability to strike america. >> reporter: they clashed over immigration. at one point cruz took wish something rubio had said in a spanish language interview. >> i don't know how he knows what i said on univision because he doesn't speak spanish. second of all --

day on record. it's all thanks to the down this cold arctic air from canada. we are going to see things turn the corner as we go into tomorrow. this morning, we broke records in new york city with the temperature of minus 1. the old record in boston was minus 3. we bottomed out at minus 9. albany, 13 below. watertown started the day off at 37 below zero. monday we'll start to turn the corner. temperatures above freezing in new york. boston, 3. boston should -- boston, 35. then tuesday, temperatures will soar to the mid 50s, about 15 degrees above average for the northeast. pittsburgh should even hit 41 degrees. with this next storm system moving in, while it will start as snow, it will turn over to rain. here we go, 5:00 in the morning on monday. lighter snow showers back through west virginia. we will see a brief period of heavier snow across virginia and washington, d.c. quick one to three inches possible in washington monday morning. then we'll see it turn over to rain as we go

pillars of raft is also on display. it's the work of a chinese dissident artist. more than 3,700 migrants died last year trying to cross the mediterranean to europe. and on this valentine's day, we have a love story to talk it. it's one for the ages. he's 104. she's his younger wife, just 100. john and ann better of fairfield, connecticut, are said to be the longest married couple in the u.s. 83 years. today through the twitter account of a company that's embraced their story, they offered advice to questions like how do they keep things fresh and new. said ann, "we hang on to one another. just a few little hugs, and we're fine." what a beautiful story. happy valentine's day to them and to all of you. that's going to do it for "nbc nightly news" this sunday. lester holt will be back next sunday. i'm thomas roberts
