s-v-u detectives weigh in on the man accused of exposing himself to children at two different virginia beach stores. plus -- two people found dead in a van --- officers responding shoot a man they say was running from the scene. good evening and welcome to newschannel three at 6. i m kurt williams. and i beverly kidd. 2 men shot to death, another injured in the hospital -- and two newport news officers on administrative duty tonight. newschannel 3s gabriella deluca is live on the scene with

this is where those officers fired at the suspect on roanoke ave -- describe scene if officers are still out. police tape and dozens of officers line roanoke avenue -- its where an two officers shot a man earlier today. but it all started a few blocks over on wickham and 14th street -- where detectives found two men dead inside this mini van. several people came to the scene to learn more, including chester williams. 54;07 one was slumped on the back and one was slumped in the passenger seat so the person who was driving was gone and the person behind him gone investigators got a tip that two men took off. officers caught up with one of them here on roanoke avenue -- where they started shooting at him. police havent said why exactly they started shooting or if the man had a weapon. 48;13 during that encounter with that male subject our officer

the subject was taken to the hospital w a gunshot wound to his abdomen ... somethat has chester concerned. 2:52 the bullet has no name on it so it does make sad starting off the year like this with 4 individuals... at least 2 are dead, one in the hospital & one on the loose witnesses say there may have been another suspect -- so thats what they are focusing on now -- finding out who that is. police say they believe the two officers involved were wearing body cameras -- so they will be oking into that. for the two men who are dead their names havent been leased. nn gd nc3 names havent been released. in nn gd nc3 turning to the weather more sun and a lot warmer today at the portsmouth harbor. chief f teorologist patrick

tracking rain and slightly warmer temps....we hope you ve enjoyed the sunshine lately because rain is moving back in, at least briefly. as we move through your friday, expect increasing clouds across hampton roads and ne north carolina as an area of low pressure moves up the coast. while the day will likely start dry, rain chances will go up by friday afternoon and evening. a couple of showers may linger into early saturday morning, but majority of saturday looks dry with partly sunny skies. high temperatures will be in the mid 50s friday and the upper 50s by saturday. we re keeping an eye on another area of low pressure that could bring us a couple of showers sunday, but at this point, the day does not look like a washout. high temperatures will dip into the upper 40s. by monday and tuesday, highs will struggle to

breaking news -- right now -- newport news police are on the scene of a death investigation. police got the call around 4-45 this afternoon. when they arrived to the scene on erin lane they found a man who was pronounced dead.

more on this developing story -- a stunning political announcement today. newschannel three s les smith joins us live now in the studio more. congressman scott rigell is not running for re-election. the third term republican said when he was first elected that he would not serve more than twelve years in office. now he )s leaving after six representing the 2nd district. the 55-year old said he had achieved what he set out to do -- build a strong house majority and check the democrats -- who then controlled both political branches of government. rigell says his family helped

rigell and his wife owned automobile dealerships before he was elected to office. he has one year left in his term. keep your children with you at all times. that )s the message from detectives with virginia beach police tonight -- for parents while they are out shopping. this comes after two incidents of a man exposing himself to young children -- and still no arrests. newschannel 3 s kelly rule joins us live at one of those stores where it happened-- the barnes and noble on virginia beach boulevard. kelly what )s the latest? well - we now know that the children that the man exposed himself to -- were all under the age of six and were not with their parents at the time.now police are urging parents -- even in what seem like perfectly safe stores like this one behind me -- to keep your children with you at all times. exposing himself to three children -- under the age of six -- that )s what police believe this man did at two different

the first happened back in november -- when this video was taken -- at the barnes and noble. and they want your help -- in identifying him. 33;22 sometimes it takes a community and in this incidence it is going to take a community to get this guy into custody 26;18 they need to catch him, they need to catch him, i don t-p&-p&- want to see him newschannel 3 brought you the story earlier this week. police believe this same man -- exposed himself to two children in the toy aisle at a dollar tree over the weekend. that store is just five minutes down the road from the barnes and noble. today -- virginia beach police special victims unit detective kristy curtis tells newschannel 3 -- the victims parents didn )t realize what happened until after the fact. that )s because the kids were not directly with their parents -- when the man approached them. 28;05 one child immediately notified the parent which is exactly what that child should do 29;16 it absolutely is traumatizing kids this age do remember things that )s why detective curtis says she is urging all parents -- to make sure their

in one of them---a newport news teenager is fighting for his life. police were called to 18th street and ivy avenue. when they got there police say they found a 17 year old shot in the lower back. he was taken to the hospital and police say his injuries are life threatening. investigators are still trying to find a suspect. and a shooting in hampton sent one man to the hospital. this shooting also happened last night---it was just before 9-30 on martha lee drive -- off big bethel road. police say they found a man shot multiple times. we )re told that person remains hospitalized but should make a full recovery. police say a third shooting night happened during a home invasion in portsmouth. police were called around eight-30 last night to queen street. that )s between london boulevard and high street. one woman was sent to hospital with serious injuries after she was shot. investigators say they )re looking for three people believed to be involved. but so far they have not released who they are. anyone with more information on

the u-s marshall s service arrested 25-year old anthony smith junior today for the shooting death of dashanika sherrod. police say smith was in a relationship with sherrod that recently ended. he )s accused of forcing his way into her newport news apartment monday morning -- going into her bedroom-- and shooting her to death. we know her 2 young children were in the home when she was killed. police say after shooting her-- he took off. no powerball jackpot winners in the commonwealth last night. but according to the virginia lottery seven hundred thousand people in virginia won smaller prizes. a couple one million dollar winners were minted here. one of them is in salem -- the other million dollar ticket was sold right here in virginia beach. it was bought at this seven eleven on lynnhaven parkway -- near salem road. some people there today said if

with their winnings. we )re told the seven hundred thousand winning tickets in virginia totaled nearly seven million dollars in prizes. virginia state government offices will be closed for the next four days. they will be closed tomorrow -- as the state observes lee- jackson day. tomorrow kicks of the first of the four day weekend for state workers. monday is martin luther king day -- which is a federal holiday. a research website is ranking a virginia college as the third safest in the country. niche dot com just released the list of the safest schools in america. regent university in virginia beach took the third spot. the website says it has a low campus crime rate -- though the local crime rate got a c grade. list at number 63.

o-d-u at 547. further down is hampton university at 7 hundred 88. and norfolk state is 929. to generate the ranking -- the website considered factors like crime, drug and alcohol use, and graduation rates. governor terry mcauliffe highlighted several positive accomplishments in his annual state of the commonwealth address last night he talked about nearly one hundred- thousand new jobs -- an end to veteran homelessness -- and an expansion to the school meals program for children. he also featured programs to develop a workforce for the computer age -- leaving behind the so- called industrial age model. mcauliffe cited bipartisan support for work to get veterans jobs and housing -- and hopes the same can be true for medicaid expansion. nauticus and the battle ship wisconsin are kicking off 20-16 with special deal.
