snow building up on eye-95 -- that s sliding hill. and looking outside in norfolk right now -- so let )s get right to the live viper forecast center with a look at what s coming. rain, snow and wind... we are gearing for a significant winter storm to impact much of virginia and north carolina over the next few days. snow will move in from southwest to northeast, from mid-morning to midday. areas along the albemarle and outer banks, will more than likely see rain. as the area of low pressure moves closer to the area, it will drive in slightly warmer temperatures, which will cause the snow to transition to rain for most areas. we will see that switch to rain from south to north through the midday to afternoon hours. our northern communities, especially along the peninsulas, may see a slower transition to rain than the rest of us, meaning you could see a little

saw a lot of high school kids leaving school buses show up three hours early to cox high school early. theres no snow yet -- but it could be coming, prompting the early dismissal. beach schools arent the only ones preparing -- lots of drivers at wawa on northampton boulevard fueled up and told us their snow day plans. 58:21 i ve been crying all winter waiting for snow to come well nows your day nows definitely my day. i have hot chocolate apple cider croissant rolls with honey and that s how we )re gonna spend the day and as for hitting the roads if the snow starts falling -- not happening. 57;46 i m not gonna drive. virginians are crazy without the snow.

gonna drive in the snow with virginians virginia beach public works had their frost patrol working from 1 this morning til 8 -- spreading salt and sand on bridges and overpasses -- like the lesner and rudee inlet bridge. but for other drivers -- they re hitting the road early in hopes to beat the storm 8;41 we are going back to baltimore and beat the snow hopefully. we are going to go the bridge tunnel that way we ll be away from it crews will be on standby all day middle school letting out at 1250 norfolk and chesapeake schools are also dismissing two hours early. on the peninsula -- newport news - and poquoson are out early. accomack and camden county schools in north carolina were added to the list this morning. all of these schools have also canceled all afternoon activities. now -- if you re wondering about other school districts or businesses - we have a

delays - running across the bottom of your screen and on w-t-k-r dot com. if you )re traveling today or this weekend -- you may want to stay put. passengers looking to fly out of ronald reagan washington national airport today were met with long lines, delays, and cancellations. thousands of flights have been canceled across the country as a winter storm hits the east coast. all flights from philadelphia international airport will be canceled on saturday. american says all eight flights out of norfolk have been canceled for today. the newport news airport says all six american flights they have been canceled. united airlines announced it would suspend flights at its washington dulles international airport hub and other mid- atlantic airports starting this afternoon. make sure you double-check your flight status if you re are flying anywhere today or this weekend. in chesapeake right now --

peninsula -- newschannel threes stefania okolie like at the newport news public works yard-- a public works yard as you can see becoming a winter wonderland. within the last 40 minutes we )ve seen light snow turn to these massive flakes. crews have been working throughout the morning to prepare for this. here a part of the 700 hundred thousand ton sand pile -- they ve already started pre treating the roads--getting ready for this snowfall. a snow fall that i found was a dream come true for many today.
