the interstate - covered in snow and ice. here in hampton roads - the story right now - the rain! it )ll be heavy at times overnight. but patrick says more snow is on the way. so right now - let )s go to chief meteorologist patrick rockey with more on what we can expect in the next 24-48 hours. tracking rain, snow, wind and flooding....the newschannel 3 storm team continues to track a major winter storm through our area, with impacts tonight through part of the weekend. as we move through our early friday evening, snow will continue to fall across parts of the peninsulas and the eastern shore before all of the snow comes to an end and rain overspreads the area. the rain could be heavy at times tonight through early saturday, so keep that in mind. now, with the rain moving in, that means temperatures will be warming up, too. in fact, we )re expecting temperatures to-p&rise into the mid 40s by-p&saturday morning.

but there will be some breaks with the rain from time to time as the center of the storm pushes just offshore. high temperatures will be in the mid 40s in the morning, then fall into the mid 30s by afternoon, just in time for more snow showers to move in on the backside of the storm. while some accumulations are possible on grassy areas, it may be tough for a lot of the snow to stick to the pavement because most of our temperatures should be above freezing in wake of the rain. we ll keep an eye on it through the day. by sunday, while some slick spots will be possible by morning, most of the wintry weather and rain will be gone. in fact, we ll see decreasing clouds and highs in the mid 30s. more sunshine is on tap for monday with highs in the upper 40s. we ll be back in the mid 50s by tuesday. rain moves back in by wednesday. in addition to the snow and rain, we will see very strong winds. winds will start to crank up on today with gusts to near 40 mph. gusts could reach to 40+ mph on saturday and sunday. winds will start from the ne but shift to the north. this could

roads here in downtown norfolk are slick tonight. and that is the case for all of the city. crews have been spreading salt and sand on bridges and overpasses throughout the night but there were still plenty of accidents. which is why they are urging drivers to stay off the roads if they can -- but for delivery drivers -- that isn t an option-p&-- though one business has-p&found ways to make their jobs -p&safer.-p&-p&6:25:23 -- hot pizza hot out of -p&the -p&oven nat -- 6:25:24 - oven-p&closing and into the freezing -p&cold temperatures. delivery drivers at granby pizza in downtown norfolk know that when the temperatures drop -- their business picks up. 6:17:55 friday and saturday we are always open till 11 whether it rain or snows or storms peter freda owns granby pizza. for the last 10 years -- he has seen his fair share of storms -- and today s was no different. 6:19:10 we are always open and my staff knows it too. they know me. they know we are going to be open, even if i have to pick them up. in this go-pro video --from a granby pizza delivery man )s perspective-- you can see the messy conditions they have to drive through in downtown norfolk. but that doesn t stop drivers who face the elements so that customers don t have to. 6:17:37 today has been very busy, we started off doing business to business a lot

they feed their staff first and then residential in the evening. according to freda -- the store s delivery carts are what-p&give them an edge while -p&traveling in a winter storm. 6:19:40 the carts are easy to drive through the snow they handle the snow very well and while most of granby pizza s customers choose not to test the slushy roads tonight -- there are still some who took a risk in order to get dinner. customer 6:39:21 we live in virginia beach and it was worth the trip to come in and get the pizza with more rain and snow in our future its possible for road conditions out here to get even worse. crews are working around the clock in all cities to clean up the roads but there will still be slick spots so they ask for you to exercise caution if you find yourself on the roads this weekend. in norfolk im allison mechanic newschannel 3.

nearly two dozen firefighters battled a house fire on glen oak drive in norfolk this evening. that )s off philpotts road and tidewater drive. we )re told there were no working smoke detectors in the home. tonight- five people are spending the night with family members in the area. no one was seriously hurt - no word what caused this fire. if you don )t have to be out on the roads - stay home! that - from state police tonight - troopers have responded to nearly 850- crashes across the commonwealth - that )s including one on route 17-where one person died. police say he lost control of his car and struck a tree. state police responded to more than 270 crashes in hampton roads, amtrak is canceling or modifying service to the northeast all weekend. trains in and out of norfolk and newport news won )t run until sunday. trains headed in or out

i m driving pretty slow out here, trying to get home safe slick and slippery -- and in some places -- icy. some dangerous road conditions -- that made a busy day for police across hampton roads. this afternoon alone -- state police say they responded to hundreds of crashes -- and dozens of disabled vehicles on the interstates. in just hampton -- at one point this afternoon -- city police say they were called to (forty-eight ( crashes. 09;20 ones that don t have trucks i say stay off the road, if you don t have nowhere to go or have no reason to be out on the road i wouldn )t be out on it that )s why steve english -- says his family hit the grocery store in hampton -- earlier this week. but many -- waited until today. this abc liquor store off of cunningham drive -- said they had 4-thousand dollars worth of purchases -- in just one hour this afternoon. 59;17 coming here stocking up on some liquor got my favorite brand, barnes gin 53;20 there was lines wrapped around the store, probably 75 to 100 people in here alcohol -- was definitely a snowstorm priority -- but some customers -- were stocking

plows, and crews out during the winter storm. it the area. state police say they responded to more than 120 or updated number crashes today.vdot has a command center set up in virginia beach where they watch about 300 traffic cameras. sot kenneth coody -- vdot 19:51 snow is king when snow is coming that )s all we focus on aubrey transportation 25:40 its going to be a rough 24 or 36 hours and i would encourage people who dont have to drive to stay off the roads vdot says the command center will be operational for the duration of the storm. new at 11 the snowy conditions are great for local ski shops but you have to be able to get the skiers safely to the slopes. ski world in va beach did a brisk business today with lots of people buying gear for the ski resorts. snowshoe west virginia, a favorite for hampton roads skiiers... got a foot of snow today with 2-3 feet expected this weekend. ski world had a bus load of skiiers
