6:49 am
for a longer period of time. and then as they drop down, you get down toward the end, the gauge, not the gas itself, but the gauge tends to move more rapidly down towards the bottom. it is a psychological thing because most people if i the tank but not everybody runs it down into the lower ranges. >> so -- when they -- so is it an attempt to make sure we go and get gas when we need to and its sea staying up at the full mark longer, is that just to make us think the car is getting really great mileage or something? >> it is just a psychological thing that, if the car seems to stay on full for a longer period of time that, your perception of it is that it is better on gas when in reality, it is nothing but the way the

gauge in the car works. >> now, they kind of have those -- the digital readings that tell you, too, how much gas you have. we were talk about this yesterday too. >> pat, i got a question for you. i got a friend who keeps the gas tank at a quarter tank or less all the time. is that bad for the car? >> no, not at all. and this is another common misconception because the pickup tube where the fuel is sucked out of the tank is always picking up from the bottom of the tank. so it makes no difference how much fuel is in the tank. the only disadvantage to that on older cars might be that the fuel pump in the tank would run a little hotter but even that, that is minimal. >> here is what i would like to see. i like to live on the enand i'll republican that below the red line. i'll let it go down as far as it possibly can but what i've noticed by standing on the side

of the road a few times is from vehicle to vehicle, some you can get by a couple of gallons and some it seems to shut off right way. >> that is because gas gauges, if you read most owners manuals, they essentially tell you that i gas gauge is simply an indicator. it is not an actual tool that is going to be precise. so aitle good way, when you get down in the lower ranges, it is a good way to wind up walking. >> -- so it is a good way, when you get down in the low are ranges, it is a good way to wiped up walking. >> we thank you for coming on the show. is your show going good? >> yeah, people are great. vague lot of fun meeting people and cars are the university topic. >> we thank you for spending some time with us. can you hear him on wjfk, 106.7 the fan and you can see him on
