talk about with this cold weather and icy conditions out there. the anticipation of some of those road conditions this morning has led to numerous delays so you can see all the latest information along the bottom of your screen. >> we do want to talk about some of the big delays. federal government offices will not open until 11:00 this morning. the office of personnel management is asking federal workers to stay off the roads until 9:00 a.m. federal workers do have the option for unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework. >> now to the schools, the following schools are all opening two hours late today. in virginia, alexandria city schools, prince william county and stafford county. in west virginia, berkeley, jefferson and morgan county schools also have two-hour delays. make sure to watch the bottom of your screen for all of the updates that we have. and check out the latest list on myfoxdc.com. >> always an interesting day in the weather when you start talking about delays, ice on the roads, snow, all that stuff combined. >> yeah, we got the party

started friday night when we picked up a couple of inches of the white stuff in some areas. we have a combination of all that official frozen out there and we are getting this light mist and fog across the area. temperatures in many spots are still cold enough that it is freezing as soon as it is touching the surface. the roadways won't look wet but they could still be icy. >> that is what is dangerous. >> i think that is why the federal government has a delay here because of that concern. reagan national has bumped opportunity to 33 degrees. quantico, 34. you can see much of the area here still at or below freezing including leonardtown at 32 degrees. manassas, 30. dulles, 30. martinsburg, 31. 2 in both frederick and gaithersburg. much of the area here particularly north and west still at or below freezing. we still got reports of light fog, some mist out there and a little drizzle and that will be enough to cause some problems

out there on the roadways. here is the deal. sentinel radar is not going to show it to you. trust me, it is out there. out to the west, we have more impressive rain dandz and once that starts to move in from the south and west later this morning, our temperatures will rise into the 40s. we'll be done with this weather event and we'll just be looking at a steady rain event this afternoon. -- we have more impressive rain bands. we'll be well into the 40s with rain developing this afternoon. >> all right. thank you, tucker. time now to check in with julie wright. >> not a lot right now but we are keeping an eye on this as our conditions are going to change weather-wise which means it will impact our commute. coming across the 14th street bridge, lanes are open but those elevated passages tend to freeze before anything elsstead you want to watch your speeds as you cross over the bridge and continue to the southeast- southwest freeway. no problems at the 14th street

bridge, the wilson bridge, the american legion bridge. traffic right now flowing freely but elevated passages tend to freeze before anything else. fog a big problem this morning in the commute. it will hinder the visibility which means it will impact your vision as far as looking for any icy spots, not that they're easy to spot anyway. lanes are open. volume increasing just a bit. you do have to make the trip into work, i suggest you leave early, allow extra time out there on the roads. allow plenty of braking distance as well. no problems reported as you guys continue out of clark best of your recollection but the fog really reducing visibility down to a car length if you got that. so again, allow extra time out here on the roads. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. of course, the big story that we're talking about is the icy weather t could make if a very dangerous ride out on the roads. drivers are being urged to be

extra cautious this morning. stacy cohan live in arlington near the key bridge. see any icy patches out there already? >> well, you know, it depends where you're driving. it is certainly always a good idea to be cautious when you're driving. we have had appear icy weekend. i don't have any precipitation right here at the moment but that does not mean your roadway is clear. use your own best judgment. the federal government has exercised their judgment and that will change your commute a little. i want to show you some preparations going o there were salt and sand trucks out all over the region in the event we do have icy conditions. they are prepared for what may come. federal workers are given a break this morning. they are urged by the office of personnel management to stay off the roadways until 9:00 a.m. the federal government offices will not open until 11:00 a.m. today. and therefore, metro has agreed to extend their hours of rush hour operations to accommodate the federal workers getting a late start this morning. metro will extend their rush

just off to the north and west including montgomery county and howard county and up towards frederick and carol county, it is until 11:00 this morning. so again, freezing rain advisory. these cold temperatures will be very slow to get pushed out of here. any more mist, freezing fog that we get over the next couple of hours could cause additional problems and that is a concern. temperature now at reagan national continues to be 33 degrees. we are in the clear at reagan national. 34 in quantico but lots of temperatures at or below freezing. fredericksburg, 32. manassas, 30, dulles, 30. martinsburg, 30. 20s off to the north and west. gaithersburg and frederick, you are still in the 20s. even leonardtown, still 32 degrees. some of the roadways out there, some of the less used roadways could get slick in a hurry if you are getting a little fog and mist that could adhere to the surface. chains in the forecast, the fog, the mist will continue this morning but eventually it will just change into a rainy day. that being said, we could have a good soaking rain around here this afternoon as this frontal

system moves in. it should push in some warmer temperatures. we should be in the 40s this afternoon. cloudy skies, early freezing rain. mist, fog, transitioning to an afternoon rain. 45 your daytime high. we should clear the 32-degree bar. early showers and clearing overnight. overnight temperatures should stay at or above the freezing mark at 40 so we won't have to worry about refreezing tomorrow morning. look at tuesday's forecast. 54degrees, our little snowpack will be gone by tomorrow. sunshine, 47 on wednesday. could be some more rain showers thursday. we kind of of bounce around. 51 on friday. let's do some traffic and find out if we got any problems out there. >> what is going on? >> what we can see, not much right now. fog going to hinder the visibility which means that black ice and icy conditions we are expecting around the area here and there will be

that being said, you can see much of the region still at or below freezing. in some ways, the very light mist and fog is worse than a steady rain when temperatures are below freezing. because the steady rain will run off. the light mist or fog will adhere to the surface of the earth as it reaches the ground. 30 at dulles. 32 in winchester. we've had a freezing rain advisory which continues until 9:00 a.m. for the immediate washington area until 11:00 a.m. for our counties off to the north and the west. there is your forecast for today. we're in the mid-40s and we'll have showers around here this afternoon as we get a frontal system moving in from the west. things will get better again as we get through the course of the morning. >> thank you. let's check in with julie wright and see how the roads are looking out there right now. if you can see the roads, i guess that would be the key. >> that would be nice for we could. it is really socked in. we are talking about the fog. here is that live stretch along 270 coming in out of gaithersburg.

arlington with the details on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. what is interesting is most of these changes were made yesterday. i am sure there are a few school children who got up bright and early waiting for me to tell them they don't have school. i'm sorry. that is not the case. many of the school systems and the federal government did act last night in anticipating of the storm and for those folks, there will be changes. the office of personnel management made the decision early that federal workers should stay off the roads until 9:00 a.m. federal government offices will be open at 11:00 a.m. that should alter your commute a bit. there is preparation going on with salt trucks and sand trucks. they are out on the roadways ready to treat if the ice does build. so the federal government thought that they would get ahead of this system so that we don't have confusion that we've had in years past. as a result, metro is extending their rush hour service through that 9:00 a.m. hour in anticipation of the federal workers who will an

a pretty bumpy ride lands some american airline flight attendants in the hospital. two hours into their trip from brazil to miami, turbulence caused the plane to drop. passengers on board say they felt their seats shaking, saw people tossed into the aisles and even witness food carts fly up and hit the ceiling. six attendance were hurt, five of them rushed to the hospital after the plane finally landed safely. the yait is keeping all of our eleven aircraft carriers despite pressure on the pentagon to cut defense spending. speaking from on board the u. u.s.s. enterprise, leon panetta
