ended with police killing the gunman. >> the tropical trouble that has everyone on alert. we begin with new details in the murder of a prince george's county's honor student. i'm matt ackland. good evening. >> i'm laura evans. an intruder shot amber stanley as she slept late wednesday night, but tonight we've learned police are looking into the possibility that the killing was a case of mistaken identity. fox 5's audrey barnes has that story tonight. >> barbara diment believes the person who shot and killed amber was actually looking for someone else. salon owner barbara diment said she'll never forget the tearful call from her friend and co- worker erma gaither telling her that her little girl who practically grew up in the salon was dead. >> she really couldn't say nothing because she was just

crime >> reporter: two days later the porch light is still on at the home in upper marlboro where 17-year-old amber stanley was shot and killed by a gunman who kicked in the front door, climbed the stairs to her bedroom and shot her multiple times while she slept. >> i thought it was really strange for someone to break in and go straight to amber's room. you know, it just didn't seem right. >> reporter: when diment learned how amber was killed, she got chills remembering what another girl who has been living in the family's home since october told her just last saturday when she visited erma at the salon. >> she came over to me and she said someone tried to, you know, grab me, take me into the woods and he had a knife and she had to fight him off and she was showing me some scratches on her arm. >> reporter: prince george's county police confirm they visited the family's home tuesday to investigate an undisclosed crime. the next day amber was shot and killed. two others in the home got out through a window and weren't

hurt. >> i do because amber is such a good kid. i do believe that. i do. that it had something to do with that girl. >> reporter: investigators say they are looking into the possibility that amber's slaying was a case of mistaken identity but haven't ruled anything else out either. that killer is still out there. >> very troubling. audrey barnes, thank you. we are following a developing story, a domestic dispute led up to a police involved shooting in the district. it happened around sib 30 on fourth street southeast. -- 6:30 on fourth street southeast. police found a man and woman arguing. the man pulled a knife. officers ordered him to drop. it when he refused, police shot him. he was rushed to the hospital in grave condition, no word on his identity. another big story tonight, several people shot near new york's empire state building. police say a laid off worker shot and killed a former co-

worker. then he was killed by police in a shootout that wounded nine bystanders. fox's joe walden has the story. >> reporter: during the morning rush hour chaos on the street surrounding new york city's iconic empire state building after police say a disgruntled employee, jeffrey johnson, opened fire killing his former 41-year-old co- worker at hazan imports, a woman's accessories designer. >> in a dispute with one of the formers employees of hazan in front of the building johnson produced a pi holiday weekend and fired at -- a pistol and fired at close range. >> reporter: a construction worker flagged down cops who then tracked down the suspect. >> as the two officers approached johnson, he pulled his 45 caliber semiautomatic pistol from his bag and fired

on the officers. >> reporter: a gun battle erupted on new york city streets. >> i heard multiple gunshots and one single gunshot. it was pretty surreal because there was no screaming. it was just slow motion. >> reporter: when the gunfire stopped suspect jeffrey johnson was dead and nine others were injured. authorities say some of them were inadvertently struck by police bullets. >> i asked everyone to keep the victims in their thoughts and prayers. this is a terrible tragedy and there's no doubt that the situation would have been even more tragic but for some extraordinary acts of heroism. >> reporter: police worked to cordon off the area. new yorkers and tourists struggled to keep their nerves in check. >> it's just too bad. i'm very anxious. >> reporter: the accused shooter was laid off about a year ago from his job and sources tell fox news both he and his intended victim, his co- worker, had filed formal complaints against each other

with the nypd. joel walden, fox news. >> police identified the victim as steven ercolino, the company's vice president of sales. six wounded bystanders were treated at a hospital and released. three others are still hospitalized, but will be okay. a man who had been on the run for days is now locked up. prince george's county investigators say they tracked down the two men who were driving fast in a stolen car being followed by police. a rookie officer was killed in the crash that followed. fox 5's beth parker has the story. >> reporter: to turn himself into police, kevon neal had to walk through a doorway draped with black bunting in honor of officer adrian morris. when asked if he should be brahamed for officer morris' death -- blamed for officer morris' death? >> no. >> reporter: authorities had already tracked down kenneth mitchell. investigators say both men were in a stolen acura monday that was being followed by police. now neal has given himself up,

too. >> he had nowhere else to go. >>now think that you're going to terrorize the people of this community, we will go after you and we will bring you to justice and that is what this police department has done. >> reporter: here is some surveillance video. neal and mitchell were suspects in a series of thefts at gas stations. that's why officer morris and his partner were following them. witnesses say citizens on i-95 monday were dodging the acura. when police had to swerve, the cruiser lost control and slipped. >> their action caused the death of adrian morris in my opinion. >> reporter: but right now the men are only charged with felony theft. >> we will leave no stone unturned. >> reporter: state's attorney angela alsobrooks says if there is evidence of gross negligence, she will push for vehicular manslaughter. >> we haveo wait until we receive all the evidence in the case, but if it points toward that, i can assure you that i will file the appropriate charges and if that means vehicular manslaughter, that is the charge that we will file. >> reporter: officer morris

was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. today chief magaw addressed that. >> wearing a seatbelt is very important and it's something that we stress, but in the heat of battle sometimes that's not your first response is your own safety. it's the safety of others. >> reporter: officer morris was just 23 years old. he leaves behind a family and a fiancee. his funeral is next week. beth parker, fox 5 news. meanwhile alexandria police are searching for a shoplifter who took officers on a wild car chase this afternoon. it started at the shoppers food warehouse on route 1. during the chase the suspect hit two vehicles including a police cruiser. the suspect then got away after one of the pursuing officers was hit by another car. alexandria police say they are looking for a heavyset black female in her 50s driving a white mitsubishi lancer with virginia tags. community leaders in ellicott city reopened main

street just four days after a train derailment that killed two women. the decision to reopen the street came this afternoon after investigators and csx officials reported significant progress in cleaning up the coal that spilled onto main street. meanwhile family and friends attended a memorial service for elizabeth nass today. rose mayr's funeral will be held told. a boating accident this week -- held tomorrow. a boating accident this week is getting the attention of republican leaders in the maryland house, this after a fellow lawmaker admitted to drinking while operating his speedboat in pasadena wednesday. don dwyer said his blood alcohol level was 0.2, more than twice the legal limit. today the republican leadership released a statement saying they appreciate that dwyer was candid about this drinking but are troubled by the circumstances. tropical storm isaac bearing down on the dominican republic and haiti tonight.

this is what it looked like recall this afternoon as ran and wind started lashing the island. the storm could dutch as much as 8 to 12 -- dump as much as 8 to 12 inches of rain. gary mcgrady is in the weather center and joins us with the latest. >> just got an 8:00 advisory, the latest on isaac. it's not really strengthening more. it's sitting right to the south of the dominican republic, hispaniola. it's about 90 miles southeast of port-au-prince moving northwest at now 10 miles per hour, slowed down just a little. the reason there will so be much rain for the dominican republic and haiti, there's higher elevations there really squeeze out all that moisture. so in some places they could pick up a foot of rain. let me show you current conditions for tropical storm isaac, winds 65 miles per hour. that's what it was at 5:00. they generally do not change that on an 8:00 update. movement is northwest at 10,

pressure down to 992-millibars. in terms of the track, not anything has changed since earlier because they don't update the track either. we'll have to wait on 11:00 for that. you can see it's definitely headed towards the florida straits in the forecast anyway and up into the eastern sections of the gulf of mexico. right now they forecast isaac to become a category 1 hurricane just to the west of tampa, southwest of tampa, if you will, on monday afternoon and make landfall in the florida panhandle at a category 1 hurricane as well. things could change either way. it could still go to the west or east. this is early on in this preliminary track for tropical storm isaac. tropical storm isaac also poses a threat to tampa as you saw on the map where the republican national convention begins monday. with thousands of visitors expected officials are watching the storm's track very closely

to assess whether to tone down the party or caps events because of the storm. >> -- cancel events because of the storm. >> at this point everybody is comfortable. we're going to have a great convention. the delegates will have a great experience. they'll see maybe a little rain and wind in florida, but they'll see how nice people are in florida. we'll have a great convention. >> isaac is expected to become a category 1 hurricane as it approaches the u.s. oil companies including bp and shell are evacuate some rigs in the gulf of mexico. mexico-- evacuating some rigs s in the gulf of mexico. incredible new video from inside a bus that slammed into a maryland home, all that and more when fox 5 news at 10:00 continues. oh, one more and a mother's dramatic leap for safety is caught on cam, camera. 

twice in the last week

someone has tried to rob a bank by cutting a hole in a wall from the next-door business. it happened last friday morning at bank of america on connecticut avenue and then again this morning at an m&t bank on wisconsin avenue in georgetown. fox 5's paul wagner has the story. >> reporter: the fbi today released these images of a man in a white hazmat suit wearing a blue baseball cap using tools to cut through a wall in order to get to the automatic teller machine. it was around 2 a.m. when police got the call for an alarm at the bank. 12 hours later investigators were still processing the crime scene. at one point they called in the fire department to make sure the building was structurally sound. just last friday around the same time police found a similar crime scene at bank of america in the 2600 block of connecticut avenue northwest. in this video released by the fbi the man appears to be wearing the same suit with a mask and gloves and the hood

pulled over his head. at 1 point standing on something to -- one point he was standing on something to get access to a fixture on the wall. >> these are brazen break-ins and to do it twice within one week in the district that's why together with the metropolitan police department we ask for the public's help to help us solve this. >> reporter: a little over a year ago may 24th someone tried to pull the same caper at the same connecticut avenue bank in the exact same way. in the video the man is not wearing a mask, gloves or even the white hazmat suit. >> i think we would ask the public for any information whether they know of people talking about these crimes, whether that you've seen any suspicious activity over the past week both the bank of america location or m&t bank location. people who would know of the vacant properties adjacent to the banks. >> reporter: at bank of america on connecticut both attempts failed. they opened the wall but couldn't open the atm. in the attempted robbery on connecticut avenue last year the fbi said there were two

suspects involved. what the unclear is if the same two suspects are involved in the incidents from last friday and one here in george town early this morning. the video only shows one suspect, that is, the video the fbi released to the media. what's unclear is whether or not anything was accessed here at this atm and whether or not they got anything. we know in the previous two attempts nothing was talk. in georgetown paul wagner -- was taken. in georgetown paul wagner, fox 5 news. also caught on camera a ride on a bus slams into a home as passengers hang on for dear life. it happened monday morning in silver spring. this is surveil video from inside the bus. you can see the passenger goes flying when the bus drive lost control, then crashed right into the front door of a home. two people were inside the house at the time. fortunately no one was hurt. in a press conference today republican congressman todd

akin reaffirmed his plans to stay in missouri's u.s. senate race. he's been under fire for recent comments suggesting women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy during what he called legitimate rape. top republicans have asked akin to drop out of the senate race. >> apparently there's some people who are having trouble understanding our message. i'd like to be clear on that today and that we're going to be here through the november election and we're going to be here to win. now there may be some negotiations, but they don't include me. >> during the press conference akin department address the remarks he made last week -- did not address the remarks he made last week. to the race for the white house where mitt romney and paul ryan reunited for a preconvention rally. fox's craig boswell has the details. >> reporter: mitt romney arrived in michigan followed by wife ann along with running

mate paul ryan, the soon to be republican nominee stepped into a controversy when talking about returning to his homestate. >> i was born at harper hospital. no one ever asked to see my birth certificate. they know that this is the place that we were born and raised. >> reporter: the comment hearkening back to the now discredited controversy over president obama's birth certificate surprised many as romney typically steered clear of. that today's stump speech is his first in michigan since june. >> i need you to fine at least one person that voted for -- find at least one person that voted for obama and get them to change their mind and vote for us. >> reporter: the pair is one point up on president obama and vice president joe biden, well within the margin of error. it's the first fox poll to focus on likely voters, not just registered voters. >> the polls i look at are the polls in the swing states because those are the polls that decide who the next president will be. >> reporter: as thousands arrive in tampa attentions

shift from the polls to the stage where romney will accept the nomination. >> conventions are outdated and what they really are is an opportunity to articulate your vision for whatwhere you want to take the country. >> reporter: what remains unseen is whether a brewing storm named isaac will water down the message. today a former candidate rick santorum released his delegates. the roll call is now scheduled for monday, far earlier than previous conventions. >> fox 5 will have complete coverage of next week's republican national convention. we'll have live coverage throughout the day from tampa, florida. also fox 5 political analyst mark plotkin will talk to us from the convention throughout the week. new tonight a jury ordered samsung to pay apple more than $1 billion in a patent lawsuit that stretched out over a year. apple sued samsung claiming the company ripped off the design and technology it used to create the iphone and ipad. apple was asking for $2.5

billion in damages, but the jury decided against some of the claims and awarded the company less money. samsung is expected to appeal the decision. up next the man who targeted a christian lobbying group in d.c. goes before a judge. >> and later the actions of a man who knows he's guilty, investigators fire back at lance armstrong after his decision to drop the fight against doping charges. 

the man who is accused of shooting a guard at the family research council appeared in court this afternoon. floyd lee corkins stood before a federal judge this afternoon and when asked, he said he was not guilty. fox 5's bob barnard has the latest. >> reporter: his attorney says floyd lee corkins has been found competent to stand trial. this was the 28-year-old herndon man as he was being arrested nine days ago.

corkins is charged in the shooting at the family research council's chinatown headquarters august 15th. the fbi has said corkins had a 9-millimeter handgun, 50 rounds of ammunition and 15 chick-fil- a sandwiches in a backpack when he opened fire inside the g street building's lobby that day. the frc's building supervisor leo johnson who also serves as a security guard was shot in the arm during a confrontation in which a witness says corkins allegedly said he doesn't like the christian conservative group's policies. the frc opposes abortion right and gay marriage. frc executives expressed support for the head of the chick-fil-a corporation who came under fire recently for his vocal opposition to gay marriage. in court this afternoon corkins pled not guilty to all three charges against him. interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition, assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime with violence.

we were hoping to learn what corkins' intentions were that morning with the gun and chicken sandwiches, but that will have to wait for another day. he is due back at the federal courthouse october 1st. in the newsroom i'm bob barnard, fox 5 news. up next lance armstrong stropped of his tour de france titles and banned for life, more fallout from the doping schedule. >> plus redskins legends taking part in an annual tradition as rg3 gets ready to take on the top pick in this year's draft, the state of the skins next. 

this is fox 5 news at 10:00. lance armstrong has been stripped of his seven tour de france titles and banned from cycling, this after ending his fight against doping charges and l fallout does not end there -- and the fallout does not end there. >> reporter: the u.s. anti- doping agency's stripping lance armstrong's all seven tour de

france titles and also banning the athlete from competitive fo this comes after armstrong who overcame cancer decided not to fight charges he used performance enhancing drugs during his career. the cyclist strongly criticizes the usada saying the agency is on a witch hunt. in a statement he says, "the toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where i am today, finished with this nonsense." the world anti-doping agency saying usada acted properly in its investigations. >> if he was innocent, he would have stated as much by rebutting the evidence, testing the evidence, cross-examining the witnesses. that won't now happen. it virtually keeps the evidence under the lap to make any statement he wishes to make and he's done. that. >> reporter: usada saying it expects cycling's governing body to take similar action,

but the international cycling union says it want the american agency to explain why armstrong should lose those titles he won from 1999 through 200five and the organizers of tour de-- 2005 and the organizers of tour de france say they will wait to see what happens before commenting on the case. one of armstrong's major sponsors stands by him. nike will continue to support the cyclist and his foundation for cancer survivors. in new york laura ingall, fox news. the redskins celebrated the team's 80th anniversary today during an annual tradition coming on the eve of a preseason game featuring rg3 squaring off against the top pick of this year's draft. fox 5's lindsay murphy has both stories. big day in sports. >> for sure. even though it's preseason, you can't help but look forward to the redskins versus the colts tomorrow afternoon at fedex field, the skins led by robert griffin, iii, the colts by andrew luck, but since it's the

all eyes on isaac as the storm is barreling towards the gulf of mexico, some oil companies pulling workers off their rigs. companies including bp, shell and apache oil making the call friday in anticipation of isaac. we'll be keeping a very close eye on oil and gas prices as the storm moves in. friday oil prices ended north of $96 a barrel. meantime coal is the economic recovery that isn't. labor department out with new numbers that paint a dreary picture of the job market. while more than half the people that lost a job between 2009 and 2011 found a new one by the start of the year, most of them took a very big pay cut to get that job, some 20% or more. and when what happens in vegas doesn't stay in vegas, vegas fights back. in response to images of a naked prince harry and his royal ruth going viral, sin city is launching -- royal rump going viral, sin city is launching a new ad campaign urging people to know the code. what happens in vegas stays in

republican national defense is a massive undertaking. in 2012 there's one uninvited guest organizers and attendees hope will decide not to show up, tropical storm isaac, which could develop into a hurricane and come crashing into tampa bay just as the convention is set to start. >> tampa is really excited about hosting the rnc. we don't have any plans to cancel it. >> reporter: that decision will be left to party leader, but it's state leaders dealing with the unforeseen impact isaac might have on security operations in tampa. some 3,500 state and local law enforcement officers from around florida are scheduled to be here to cover the convention but may not be able to leave their posts at home. governor rick scott said that could trigger plan b. >> national guard will be ready for any contingency. so if that happened, then the logical backup will be the national guard and we've already had those conversations. >> reporter: in the wake of a bulletin from the fbi and department of homeland security raising concerns about protesters aiming to wreak

havoc, authority say they will be prepared and so are the demonstrators who already have arrived. >> there's no doubt there's a small percentage that will come here bent on destruction. >> reporter: meanwhile on the convention floor organizers are moving ahead with a setup they say will be unlike any other in convention history. high resolution l.e.d. screens will give them the ability to tailor the setting to each individual speaker. >> we can use those screens to turn the podium into a factory floor or a midwest farm or we can punctuate them with social media feeds during the shows. >> reporter: party leaders also spent this week in tampa getting ready to roll out the gop platform. we did get an exclusive look at the language on abortion earlier this week, but the formal platform is set to be rolled out and voted on by the delegates monday. in tampa shannon bream, fox news. >> well, it looks beautiful in tampa behind shannon tonight but not the case a little bit later. >> it's always nice the days

the 10 miles per hour it was moving with the 8:00 update. the pressure has come down a little bit. listen, it's basically right on top of haiti right now, just entering onto the island of haiti right around port-au- prince, no doubt getting some very heavy rain. the forecast tr change a little here since it just updated. okay. they've basically left it unchanged from what it was earlier. so it's going to go across cuba, stay a tropical storm and then go right across the florida straits. you can see 65 miles per hour, so it doesn't have much to go before it becomes a potential hurricane up here in the western sections of the gulf of mexico. again it's really close to the western sections of florida there. so any little wobble or change in the track and it could end up going cross parts of florida. i wanted to show you the model tracks here. initially they're very clustered together for the first 48 hours. as they start getting across

cuba notice how they kind of diverge a little bit. some of the guidance still suggests that this could go across miami, southern sections of florida and this particular track would take it right up over tampa. most of them now are shifting a little bit farther to the west. we've gotten the upper level data into these models now. so the reliability i think is a little better than where they were just yesterday. so things are beginning to look pretty good along this track, at least from right now from the hurricane center. so that's what we know now. again the wind speed has come up a little bit on tropical storm isaac to 70 miles per hour. 78 now in the city, 73 degrees for manassas, a lot of rain down to the south. this is an area of low pressure coming up from north carolina. this is going to affect us this weekend. here's the setup for tomorrow. low pressure is getting closer to us. as the low pressure comes in, high pressure to the north, it will bring all the eastern flow in. that's going to bring all the moisture coming off the ocean.

we'll have clouds, showers, maybe a few peeks of sunshine, but there won't be much sunshine, if any, tomorrow. in terms of what we're looking at with the rainfall potential the heaviest of the rainfall looks like it will be to the east of us, mainly east of the bay right now. they may pick up 1 to 1 1/2 inches of rain. we're looking for a general 1/2- inch to 1 inch over the weekend. so that's a fairly substantial rain for us. it will be good rain, too. it's not going to come at once. mostly clouds overnight, a few showers possible, clouds and showers tomorrow. it will be cooler, temperatures tomorrow only be in the 70s, so a far cry from the 88 degrees we had today. we had a beautiful week, so here we go. we're not going have such a nice weekend. we'll have some rain tomorrow, some showers lingering sunday. if we get a little sunshine sunday, temperature will be 82. if we don't, it will still be in the 70s. it looks drier and warmer

heading into next week. >> thanks. as parts of florida brace for tropical storm isaac, many pause to remember hurricane andrew, the destructive storm which touched down 20 years ago today. fox's eugene ramirez has the story. >> at this point it's the best we can hope for. we don't want anybody to get hurt. >> reporter: category 5 hurricane winds sweeping across south florida 20 years ago today. hurricane andrew leveling entire communities in south dade. >> everything is gone, the whole landscape was just flat. >> reporter: homestead fruit stand owner robert mulling will never forget what he saw. >> everything from upstairs blew downstairs and out the back. >> reporter: thousands couldn't believe their eyes either emerging from what was left of their homes and shelters to find an unrecognizable dade county. >> we lived in the same home for about five years and didn't recognize our own streets,

couldn't recognize. there was no landmarks, everything flat. you couldn't get through the roads. >> reporter: at harris field in homestead where kids now come to play is where 20 years ago thousands would line up for food, water and ice. >> it was a great lot of people that helped out a lot in that situation. >> reporter: people opening up their hearts to strangers and their homes to neighbors. >> we had 12 people in our house the first night after the storm because the neighbors had broken windows and roofs missing. >> reporter: then emergency manager kate hale criticized the slow government response to the disaster. today she said it was heart that pulled us through. >> the generosity, selflessness and sacrifice of our neighbors. >> reporter: 20 years later florida international university debuting a simulator capable of producing andrew strength winds to improve how we build so that this much devastation continues to be a thing of the past. >> it was pretty devastating, but hey, we made it.

>> when hurricane andrew hit, forecasters relied on observations from a single satellite. now there are many more satellites plus devices that are dropped from airplanes to take readings from within a hurricane's core. firefighters are gaining the upper hand on raging wildfires in northern california. nearly 28,000 acres across two counties are already scorched and more than 80 homes are destroyed. 900 homes are still in the direct path of the wildfires. some evacuated residents fear they may not have a house to go back to. >> i've done a lot of these fires over the years and i understand when people say they're not leaving. i always tell them i wouldn't leave either unless it gets really bad. >> the wildfire in northern california is just one of several major fires burning across the west. in idaho fire crews created a back burn to keep it away from one town and crews near seattle, washington, are still working on a fire which has
