[gunfire] >> jason aldean could have possibly ever imagined even in his nightmares. breaking news at 7 o'clock, deadliest mass shooting on american soil. shots started ringing out during aldean's country music festival. fans running for their lives. >> right now we know that at least 50 people have been killed, more than 200 injured and the suspect has been shot and killed by police. it is believed this was a lone wolf attack. the gunman has just been identified by police. >> his name steven craig paddock 64 from mesquite nevada. melanie alnwick has been vofollowing theup dates. >> reporter:. >> steve and holly, police are telling us they believe they have located the woman marilou danley they were looking for and the two vehicles they had to look out for as well. we're told paddock fired upon the crowd from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel.

closing out the night at the route 91 harvest festival. this is in an area called the las vegas village across the boulevard. you can hear rapid fire gunshots. many people said at first they thought it was firecrackers. then the music stops. the venue outdoor festival on the ground, ground level across from the las vegas boulevard. there you can see how far away mandalay bay hotel is in the distance, yet still that gunfire able to reach. it's estimated some 30,000 people were penned into this festival area many jumping gates and fences to try to get to safety. inside paddock's 32nd hotel room police say they found numerous firearms. s.w.a.t. teams had to use explosive blasts to get into his room. i did a quick background check of

so far i don't find any criminal records. they show him as being a manager of a apartment complex in mesquite and fox news sources also telling us that as far as marilou danley and why she was a person of interest apparently police found her players card in paddock's hotel room. we also see some association here with her and paddock as well as her husband, so more information i'm sure is going to start coming in about who is this man and what was his relationship to these other people. who knows if we'll ever find out why he decided to do this shooting. back up to you guys mel thanks. >> lots of information coming in as this story continues to develop. >> bill byer in las vegas witnessed the mayhem. bill joins us on the phone. bill one question, we don't want to jump to too many conclusions some people are saying this is the deadliest shooting in u.s. history. we don't know if all of those victims were shot or if there was a panic situation as well. i know you saw a lot of

aftermath. did you hear anything that it could have been stampede type conditions in addition to the shooting. >> from what i saw and you guys all saw the video hard to believe it was stampede. more likely i think and it's just conjecture i think it was from the three magazines that this guy loaded up. what we saw here, you know, right after this thing had taken place, you know, are just people trying to get to their loved ones, trying to just get away from the scene, crying, you know, it was -- it's been chaotic and tragic and just crazy here. these people running around like they didn't know what to do. right now at the mgm hotel for the people who couldn't get back to their hotels, they've given them blankets and pillows and they're all camped out downstairs. excuse me. i'm a little tired. they're all camped out

back where they got to go in the morning. >> understandably you're tired, bill, and of course it's all setting in, too, what you just witnessed. can you kind of take us back and just tells how it unfolded for you? >> sure. new york-new york and mgm are linked via a bridge. and, you know, musicians hang out on that bridge, people hang out on that bridge and if you're looking down the street, you'll see mandalay bay, it's about three-quarters of a mile up the street and the venue not far from there. so, i came up there, new york-new york came up on the bridge. as soon as i walked out there was a large police presence, ambulance were coming down the street. i said, hey, what's going on? there's been a shooting. they think it's a sniper. so, you know, i went down, i got a little closer to the scene and when i got down there i took some video and tweeted out that this was a staging area for -- for victims and the ambulance were coming in by six

a time as they were triaging people in front of the mgm and getting them in the ambulance and shipping them out. so, you know, at that point i was a little bit more with the journalist hat and tried to get some facts and see what was going on. as i went back up to the escalator to get back up to the bridge, all of a sudden there was panic. there was about 75, a hundred people still on that bridge and we heard reports of gunshots is what they sounded like and we all just took off and we got about three or four blocks away from mgm, off the strip before, you know -- it was crazy. you know, my legs were shaking when i got over there. so, you know, i made my way back after awhile and when i did, the police automatically corralled me and got me into the mgm and at that point it was a

so, i couldn't get in and -- nobody could get in. i couldn't get out. friends of mine were over at new york-new york and we were texting each other back to back on what was going on but a little bit later here, and i got some video that i sent you folks while i was in the lobby of the mgm, the s.w.a.t. team came in, completely armed, automatic weapons. they trucked through the hotel up the escalators. i waited for them to come back down 'cause i knew they were coming up for something. they had a gentleman on a stretcher who seemed to have gunshot wound to his left arm which was bandaged and bleeding and they whisked him out. they did stick around a little bit longer out there looking around and i waited for everybody to leave but that was the last of the real action that i saw besides, you know, folks trying to get back to their loved ones and trying to make sure that everybody was okay. >> well, bill, we want you to defini

your loved ones here in the d.c. area. we certainly are glad you're safe and know you're out there for some time away from work but we appreciate you giving us your account here. take care, my friend. >> thanks buddy. let's stay in las vegas where lauren blanchard is on the other side of mandalay bay which is really just about one resort away from where bill is right now. good morning, lauren. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, steve, holly. and just as to what bill was talking about a little bit earlier seeing all of those ambulances, we have also seen that coming up and down sunset boulevard, just droves of them over the last few hours. it's somewhat quieted down but they're still coming up and down here just rows and rows of not only police cars but ambulances. now, of course, you guys know those numbers we are seeing more than 50 dead at this point. that makes this one of the most deadly shootings in u.s. history and we're seeing more than 200 people injured. those numbers double what we we

ago. some really catastrophic numbers coming out of this thing as police are still working extremely hard down in that area. it's still very much under lockdown. we have not been able to get much, much closer. we're going to try and get a little bit closer to the area but folks definitely on high alert. a lot of folks have been pushed out of their hotels, out of this area, kind of told just to walk up sunset boulevard and see what hotels they can find, so a lot of people in shock this morning that we've talked to. we did just talk to a gentleman a few minutes ago and as he walked by us, we noticed there was blood splatter down his shirt and he said he was so close to some of these people that were shot that it just got all over him and he and his wife were trying to perform cpr on some of these folks because in the chaos it was very hard for medics to get around so some really just horrible things we're seeing this morning. >> lauren, i know you talked a number of those concertgoers who had been in the c

venue earlier, the venue really right across the street from where you are now and had left and had run away like so many others had done. how did they describe that scene? was it a complete all-out panic of people running to try to get away? was it semi controlled? what did they say. >> reporter: well, steve, at first what they said is a lot of people didn't even realize this was a shooting. they thought this was part of the concert. two young girls that i talked to said they thought it was just -- just part of the music, when all of a sudden they saw jason aldean basically dive off stage then turned around and they saw a woman with a bullet through her head and that's when they realized something terrible was happening. it was at that same moment a lot of people realized something terrible was happening and then they just ran. there was another gentleman i talked to who was waiting here because police wouldn't let him any closer, he was waiting for his wife who was a waitress over in that area and he said as soon as she realized what was happening, she lept

more than 50 people killed in las vegas overnight. we're staying on top of that deadly mass shooting this morning. >> our bob barnard continues our team coverage with brand new firsthand accounts and other content that has come into our news room. bob, man, some of those accounts are just harrowing. >> reporter: hard to fathom the carnage there on the las vegas strip as the number of dead continues to rise. we are getting new eyewitness accounts from people who were there including fox5 news reporter kristyn leon. she's among those telling the horrific stories of surviving that deadliest of mass murders on the las vegas strip. >> it was really crazy. there was muzzle fire and smoke coming out of the window and it was just rapid fire, couple hundred rounds were fired out there and the curtains from the window where the wind was drawing them out and the gunfire was tattering the curtains and it just kept coming out of that window again and again. really just frightening. >> it was pretty much like war scene inside. i've seen a lot of stuff on my day with the fire departm

bodies that are outside down the street here that were carried probably a half a mile from the incident honestly i probably pronounced 15 to 20 people inside. it's a very sad day, an event like this something that should have never happened. >> catching up with some of my friends at the country concert. one of them she actually took off right away when she heard the sounds of the gunfire. she hospitalized a fence with another couple she didn't know, ended up hiding under a car and then making a run for it to the mgm grand hotel and she's there hiding right now still. >> myself and a few other security guards, some other civilians we all gave hands helping transport bodies. it was a lot of people that was shot unfortunately. >> one girl had shrapnel marks on the side of her face and she said it appeared the bullets were coming from mandalay bay into the concert and they were just dropping. the people were just dropping. >> reporter: awful things coming there and the lad

was anyone, you know, realizing where the shots were coming from? you heard that man talk about he could see the curtains flying out the window but could anybody get a good picture of that as it was happening? but the pictures you're seeing here of just the people leaping the barricades and, you know, just trampling over each other, that stuff is heartbreaking to see but, yeah, in ter terms of the cell phone video we'll see if anyone captured this guy shooting out the window. >> absolutely horrible. people said they witnessed with their eyes the muzzle flashes coming from the hotel which is what led police to that area in the first place to get there but hard to imagine bob somebody would -- if you're trying to escape gunfire you don't know what's going on and then you're going to take the time to actually stop and take pictures and film that is pretty unimaginable. >> reporter: you would imagine the echoing of the sound. there are a lot of tall buildings there to actually figure out where it's coming from -- if you've been anywhere near buildings and hear a noise, you think it's coming from ov

actually coming from over there so the fact that they were able to narrow down where the gunshots were coming from with all the noise that probably -- the screaming and then the echoing of the gunshots, they found him pretty quickly because they did kill this guy but not before some 50 people were killed. >> somehow the s.w.a.t. team was able to get to the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay. >> yeah they took him down and inside it is reported they also found other weapons along with him. of course as we're talking about social media a lot of people have been waiting to hear from the president. he has tweeted out this morning. this is the tweet that he just posted about five minutes ago. my warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible las vegas shooting. god bless you. that coming from his real donald trump account. posting his sentiments. obviously no doubt he is being briefed continually throughout the morning as the developing situation as we know that the fbi is there, other csi agencies are helping in this investig

figure out why this guy did this, who this guy was, how did this all come to be. >> all right, again, the gunman is 64-year-old named stephen craig paddock from mesquite nevada a suburb of las vegas. let's go back out to las vegas. we've been dipping into our sister station's coverage. let's see if we can gain more information. >> in the emergency room of course we talk about all of the people that have been called in to work and help out in a situation like this. of course we think about our first responders, you also have to think about all of our doctors and nurses who have been now called into action especially back here at the umc trauma unit. we have been talking to people out here in this area. you might have heard a sound bite from one of them earlier in the show. the man is named joseph. the one you're about to hear from. he was at the concert. he was talking about earlier in the show what he saw and what he will felt. what we didn't mention earlier is that his girlfriend was shot. he came here to try and check in on her. but he wasn't able to get in and find out what's going on. take a

>> so, we are unable to hear the sound that they're playing for their viewers out there but of course, those people and continuing cover -- in continuing coverage mode as we all are continuing to follow this mass shooting that went down overnight in vegas. initially starting at just after 10 o'clock last night. >> uh-huh. but now we know that there are at least 50 people are dead. 200 plus injured. and of course the fear is that those numbers will rise. >> this happened during the finale of -- it was a three-day music festival in las vegas. a lot of people had gone out there for the entire weekend. it was the headline performance of the final day of the festival, jason aldean was the headline former who was on stage when this happened, when the gunshots first came out and reports that there were a few shots at first and i think people thought they were fireworks or might have been part of the pyrotechnics with the show and then at that point what seemed

automatic weapon fire because it was a nonstop barrage of bullets and at that point jason aldean who was on stage realized something was wrong dove down on the stage and the crowd was trying to get out as much as they could. it's amazing when you think about how far away this was that this venue was actually not adjacent to the mandalay bay. but across the las vegas strip on the other side of the highway from the mandalay bay. so, the weapon quite powerful. we don't know what it was at this time. we know police recovered several weapons from inside that hotel room but those shots fired from a 32nd floor window across a highway into that mass gathering of thousands and thousands of people. >> there's a lot of talk about obviously it being an automatic weapon which simply means is that all you have to do is hold the trigger. you -- it keeps shooting and totally, you know, goes through the entire magazine until you take your finger off the trigger as opposed to like a semi automatic where you have to actually pull the trigger every time to shoot it. obviously this person could

like you said in a very short amount of time and then the accounts from many people are that he would stop and then was able to put in another magazine and that that happened possibly three times, maybe even more than that. and why some of these accounts are that it just lasted so long, this shooting and then talk of -- you were talking about how, you know, they shot across the vegas boulevard. it was kind of like this bowl, right, so he's shooting down and there was this fence surrounding it and that is really ironically for security to keep the people safe inside but what we've seen from some of the video and some of the pictures is that actually it prevented some people from getting out. >> the festival was sold out so you know there were tens of thousands of people who were there on the festival grounds across the street from the mandalay bay. which is not far from mac car ran airport. one of our colleagues is at the mgm grand his morning and he said because the strip had been shut down obvus

no one coming in or out from that hotel or at least allowed back in at this point. some of the hotels now that it has been a few hours are still operating, some of the casinos have reopened now on the las vegas strip and our colleague bill byer, our news operations manager who was at the mgm a short time ago says that's one of the hotel welcoming other guests in from other hotels and if they don't have rooms they're giving them blankets and a place to say. >> and try to process what they just experienced. >> right. >> vegas is one of those cities, it's very high profile not just in our country but worldwide. obviously there's no word that this is an act of terrorism. we know that this is a lone wolf, a resident of las vegas. but vegas is one of those cities that has prepared for a incident of this magnitude because vegas has been a target in al-qaeda videos and whatnot. so, the sheriff said, you know, this is what we have trained to do. obvisl

[gunfire] >> reporter: that is rapid fire gunshots from an automatic weapon. many said at first they thought it was firecrackers. the music stops. aldean rushes off stage and then the shooting picks back up again. people said it continued like this for several minutes, perhaps three times when those full magazines were unloaded onto that crowd of about 30,000. the venue is an outdoor festival ground. it's across from the las vegas boulevard so that gunfire had to travel very far. it's called las vegas village its an mgm property. many p

there saying they were jumping gates and fences to try to get to safety. now, inside paddock's 32nd hotel room police say they found numerous firearms. s.w.a.t. teams had to use explosive blasts. they tell us it's going to be a long and tedious investigation. they're bringing in the fbi to help. i did do a quick check of paddock's background. so far no criminal records have come up. they do show him as the manager of an apartment complex in mesquite and we know that police said that woman marilou danley was a roommate of his and so we see her name coming up in association with him as well. but we haven't found any criminal records so far related to the shooter, stephen paddock. fox news sources they had one of the reasons that police were looking for marilou danley is because police found her player's card in his hotel room. so, much more, of course, on this to come. we're following all of the social media as well. we know that many of the musi

the president at this point. >> you know, steve, you brought up the point about, you know, how would someone be able to get the weapon of this size the ammunition alone into a hotel and i was listening to a discussion about this, you go to a hotel people walking in with suitcases, large suitcases, suitcases that roll so even if the ammunition was very heavy it could easily be in a suitcase and it's not like there's security before you go and check in your room. so, it makes sense that someone would be able to get something like this into a hotel room. we just don't think we can wrap our minds around someone being that sinister t to want to be able to take something like that and literally perch in a hotel room 32 flights up and take people out. >> the question is why. that's the big question investigators want to know and maybe will or may not find out. that's why they were searching for his roommate to see if they could get some information frommer had. melanie

her player's cards in his hotel room. he apparently did live with her and as melanie said you to holly she apparently was married to someone who did not share that address. mesquite is about 70 miles outside of las vegas so it does not appear that this is to bring all those guns to las vegas get a hotel room with a perfect vantage point of this festival does seem a little calculated and not perhaps just a spur of the moment decision to have that event happen as in something upset him and he went off. >> set him off. they were also looking to two vehicles registered to him. both vehicles were located. we don't know what was found inside those vehicles or where those vehicles exactly where, if they were parked there at the hotel or somewhere else. so, lots of questions trying to figure out how this all happened, how it all went down, the timing of it all. but we do know obviously this is a moment in our history that will never be forgotten its tragic. the largest mass shooting eve

is. is las vegas is spread out. each one essentially takes up a city block. you see on the left the mandalay bay, the street going straight up the middle there is the las vegas strip and this is at the far southern end of the las vegas strip and then to the right across the street literally across two streets there is where that concert festival is across from the luxor casino. now, if you kept going up one casino to the top across right on top of the luxor there is the new york-new york and right on top of the festival venue is the mgm grand. that's where our bill byer is our colleague who was there when this was happening who we have been talking to on the phone throughout the morning. >> when you look at this picture and you see the distance there, though for the people that obviously were in it, it seemed like a very long time, some people say, you know, five minutes, 10 minutes, maybe even longer as this person was able to relocated at least a minimum of three times, in the grand scheme of things, the ability of the police

figure out exactly where those shots were coming from at that distance and then send a s.w.a.t. team up to the 32nd floor and breach his room and take down the gunman -- >> right. >> it's pretty amazing that they were able to do it that quickly. >> one of the first things i thought of because in that gold colored hotel that's where they believe the gunman was firing out of the 32nd win floor window and all that open space there above that little green stage area is where all of those thousands and thousands of country music fans had been. it was a three day festival. most people bought passes for the entire weekend and unfortunately and tragically at the end of the day, the final performance is when this shooting happened. >> as far as the incident investigation of course it is intense. it is ongoing. the sheriff there leading the way, he's been keeping us abreast of the situation and we hope to hear from him relatively soon. we know that the fbi has been called in, csi personnel have been called in and they d

believe with some confidence that it was a lone gunman, a lone wolf is what they said. this shooter, though, identified as 64-year-old stephen paddock, local resident, known to the police, though we don't know exactly what he was known for. he had some kind of trouble with the law in the past but we don't really know the magnitude of that. but the police were aware of him. and then for awhile they were looking for his companion, this marilou danley who they have also now located. she was a person of interest. but the nature of her involvement obviously we still don't know. >> right. she apparently lived with him in mesquite which is 70 miles or so northeast of las vegas and they have been to his house at this point. they have found the vehicles they believe were involved. they have her detained. hess deceased. so as far as any further threat, that has -- that's not going to happen at this point so police are very confident there is no further threat. however, again, i mean, the carnage is just unbelievable. 50 plus people dead, 200 plu

get down or get out. people at the concert saw what looked like muzzle flashes from the upper floors of the mandalay hotel it's called las vegas village 15-acre fairground across las vegas boulevard. mgm property. concert goers say they were jumping gates and fences to try to get to safety. we have video of that as well from the ground just really a horrifying place to be trapped into. swat teams located the shooter in a room on the 32nd floor and used explosive blasts to get to him. police say there were numerous firearms inside. going to be a long and tedious investigation. >> obviously, this is a tragic incident one we've never experienced in this valley. so what we're going to try to do is the best we can to get our first responders back on their feet and responding

heard. if you take look at the map on the big side of the screen right here and maureen talk about the calculated nature of this apparent shooting that gold colored hotel there, the kind of three-pronged hotel on the bottom left that's the mandalay bay and where it says route 91 festival concert venue in the middle of the screen right there, that open space that screen green part is part of the stage all those fans would be in that area of gray where that would be the concrete area where the fans would be. so the way that it appears from police is that that gunman was in one of the top floors of that gold hotel firing across that street which is las vegas boulevard. firing from that hotel all the way across that street and then across the stage to the, w the fans were. >> that's unbelievable. >> at least a city block when it comes to length. that's how far away from the venue the gunman was. >> right. >> which gives you the idea the power of the we were pennsylvania he was using and have those weapo i

loved ones. lots of people visit las vegas. one-866-535- -- >> jason aldeen around 10:00 o'clock last night. you can hear rapid gunfire almost sounds like helicopters overhead. then the music stops. the realization that there's an active shooter sets. gunfire starts again. as people start to yell to get down or get out. people at the concert saw what looked like muzzle flashes from the upper floors of the mandalay bay hotel across the las vegas strip. venue is called las vegas village a 15-acre fairground across the boulevard from the mandalay bay hotel. concert goers were jumping gates and fences to try to get to safety. now we have new video in as well we want to show you. this is the video also of people just either getting down on the ground or trying to flee the scene

♪ let's get back to the breaking news coming from las vegas overnight deadly shoot tag country concert outside of the mandalay bay hotel which is that hotel in gold on the right side of the screen. >> as you can see the scene very active. this is not live picture but the scene still very active out there. we do have a couple of colleagues in vegas right now. they are okay but they've been communicating with us all morning long. >> we have a couple of colleagues who are out in las vegas. one them is our director of production and news operations our news ops director bill buyer. we chatted with bill overnight over the last couple of hours. bill actually just to give you a position wise was about one hotel north of the mandalay bay right outside the ngm grand.

vegas strip from mandalay bay if you go up a hotel you have the pyramid hotel and after that you have the new york new york which is across from mgm. empties where he was. right outside of that area. he was able to hear the gunshots from the bridge. we've been talking with bill overnight and he's a recount of what he had to tell us earlier this morning. >> our colleague bill buyer is in las vegas witnessed the mayhem. he joins us on the phone. it's very early 4:00 a.m. one question i think we don't want to jump to too many conclusions here some people are sasaying the dead yesterday shooting in u.s. history. we don't know if all of those victims were shot or a panic situation as well. did you hear anything about that could it have been stampede type conditions in addition to the shooting? >> from what i saw and you guys have i was sought video, it's hard to believe it was stampede. more likely -- again conjecture i think it was from the three magazines that this guy loaded up. what we

this thing had taken place, you know, just people trying to get to their loved ones trying to just get away from the scene. crying and, you know, it was -- it's been chaotic and tragic and just crazy here. these people running around like they didn't know what to do. right now, at the mgm hotel, for the people who wouldn't get back to their hotels they've given blankets and pillows and they're camped out downstairs. excuse me i'm a little tired. they're all camped out downstairs. and probably get back where they got to go in the morning. >> understandably you're tired, bill, yours it's all setting in too what you just witnessed. can you kind of take us back and tell us how it unfoldly for you? >> sure. new york new york and mgm are linked via a bridge

and, you know, musicians hang out on that bridge. people hang out on that bridge. and if you're looking down the street, you'll see mandalay bay three quarters of a mile up the street and the venue not far from there. so i came up for air out of new york new york came up on the bridge. as soon as i walked out, you know, there was a large police presence. ambulance were coming down the industry. hey, what's going on? >> there's been a shooting. they think it's a sniper. so, you know, i went down. i got closer to the scene and when i got down there i took some video and tweeted out this was a staging area for victims, and the ambulance were coming in by six and seven at a time. as they were triaging people in front of the mgm and getting them in ambulances and shipping them out. so, you know, at that point, little bit more with adrenaline hat and trying to get some facts scen

went back up to the escalator to get back up to the bridge, all of a sudden there was panic. there were about 75, 100 people still on that bridge and we heard reports gunshots. that's what they sounded like we all just took off and we got three to four blocks away from mgm off the strip. it was crazy. i think my legs were shaking when i got over there. >> sure. >> i made my way back after awhile. and when i did, the police automatically corralled me and got me into the mgn at that point it was a lock down. friends of my where at new york new york and we were texting each other what was going and. little bit later, here and i got video i sent you folks, while i
