(wally) now to the developing, and volatile, situation in charlotte, north carolina. the governor has declared a state of emergency, and called-in the national guard, after a second night of violence. (vanessa) last night's protest started with a prayer vigil for the man shot by police, but a group split off and marched downtown. one protester was shot and critically injured... but police say: they didn't fire... it was someone (vanessa last night, scattered groups of protesters attacked reporters... broke windows... and set small fires. police in riot gear fired tear gas and marched through downtown, arm-in-arm, trying to restore calm. the unrest started tuesday, after police shot and killed 43-year- old "keith lamont scott." officers say: scott had a ?gun... residents say: he was holding a ?book, not a ?weapon... as he waited for his son to get off a school bus. tensions have been

putney says: "we're trying to disperse the crowd. we've been patient, but now they've become very aggressive, throwing bottles and so forth at my officers, so it's time for us now to restore order." --vanessa police haven't released dashboard or body-camera footage... yet. the chief says, he doesn't release video when a criminal investigation is ongoing. but that video may be the only thing that calms charlotte. right now... emotions there are raw, on edge, and running deep. "black people get shot everyday, right? it's okay for that, right? it's okay for our brothers and our fathers not to come home, right?" : "i'm talking about a massive boycott. no more walmart. no more mcdonald's. no more of these things that support the police and the police that kill us. --vanessa some companies aren't putting their employees at risk of getting caught in the middle. "bank of america" told ?thousands of workers at one location in charlotte, to stay home today.

wait to find out what keith lamont scott was holding... we are learning a bit more about his ?past. court records say: he had a criminal record, including an assault conviction, and also pleaded guilty to driving while impaired, last year. (wally) a woman who says she's an advocate for his family... says he shouldn't be, quote, "re-victimized" for things he did in the past. she says: "what he was doing at the time of the shooting is what's relevant." (wally an interesting sidebar to all of this. according to a new nationwide survey by florida's st. leo university... trust and confidence in law enforcement officers... and the system... is steady... or even slightly ?up. 60-percent gave community police departments a positive rating. that's up from 54-percent last year... 60-percent also rated the officers in their area as "good"... that's up from 53-percent last year. and florida's numbers corresponded to these nationwide ones...(more) (wally) researchers also asked people if they thought they'd be treated fair and impartially, if involved with law enforcement... and 60-percent responded... they

(vanessa new this morning: a ?bomb scare at morton plant hospital. clearwater police were called-out just before midnight, after getting a report of a bomb threat. officers and k-9's went through the entire facility... searching room by room and floor by floor... but they came up empty. the hospital was given the all- clear about 45-minutes later. police are now searching for the man who made the call. (vanessa) a ?13-year-old pasco county girl is accused of trying to poison her teacher! she's a student at "the achieve center of pasco" in spring hill. of sidewalk chalk... crushed it up... and poured it into her teacher's coffee. but another student allegedly saw it happen, and stopped the teacher before she took a sip. according to the arrest affidavit: the suspect said she ?hated the teacher. she's now charged with one count of "poisoning with intent to kill or injure a person." ((wally)) focusing... on the growing heroin epidemic in our country. that's what police in sarasota are doing

(vanessa) sad news for nearly 100 c-v-s workers in tampa. the pharmacy is laying-off 94 employees at its facility on benjamin road. they're consolodating their responsibilities, at a new location in phoenix. and the layoffs are coming at a set to start november 18th... right before the busy holiday season. the majority of employees affected are in the billing department, followed by collectors, systems support and consultants. ((jen)) it's a great idea! every night at nine... pasco's sheriff's office sends out a tweet and a facebook post reminding people to lock their doors. they call it "hashtag, 9 p-m routine" it's because of all the car breakins they've had over the past few months.. ((jen every night when they do this.. they get hundreds of likes and retweets. and it appears to be working.. there have been a lot fewer break-ins into unlocked cars over recent weeks.. so.. last night.. the tampa police department decided to give it a try.. ((jen and not only that - but they made it a friendly competition between tampa and pasco over who could get the most retweets! that contest ended in a tie.. but the real winner is everyone who follows these two departments.. getting that "heads up" every night to walk out into their driveway.. and make sure their car doors are locked.
