county. >> police are defending one of their own who was recorded on cell phone video wrestling a suspect to the ground and punching him in the jaw. delia goncalves is live outside police headquarters with a video and explanation. delia? >> reporter: the leadership here at the police station are standing behind their officer saying it doesn't represent him or the department at all. they're refusing to press any charges or even discipline this officer telling us that his actions indeed were justified. but take a look at the cell phone video yourself and i guess you can decide. this was captured on saturday afternoon. the officer wrestled this handcuffed suspect to the ground and then punched him once in the jaw, but police say that doesn't tell the whole story. we're hearing that 21 yearldz giovanti young assaulted officers and was wanted on several warrants. dash cam video released yesterday shows his first encounter with police where they say he was being very

aggressive, even kicked officers. he said he was hurt, went to the hospital for treatment. on his way back, though, that's when he unbuckled his seat belt, rolled out of the car and then had that encounter with the officer. >> there's a one dimensional picture of this officer being painted to people across this country that doesn't represent who he is and doesn't represent who we are. >> reporter: coming up in the next half-hour, hear from the man who pressed record on his cell phone and captured that encounter where the officer punched the suspect. more on that in the next half- hour. we're live outside of prince george's county police headquarters, delia goncalves, wusa9. in the news right now secretary of state john kerry is calling for reyesly and -- israeli and palestinian leadtories exercise restraint and work together to end the violence in the region. the latest count shows 40 palestinians and eight israelis have been killed. overnight israeli police shot and killed a jewish immigrant from the east african country

during an attack at a bus station. officers opened fire on this man during the attack thinking he was an assailant. the actual assailant was identified as an israeli citizen. secretary of state kerry is expected to meet with middle east leaders separately this week in an effort to ease tension in the region. the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff is promising milita cooperation when it comes to fighting extremists in syria. marine general joseph doneford made a promise to prime minister benjamin netanyahu after increasing concern about iranian involvement in the syrian war. the two leaders said while they disagree over the iran nuclear agreement, both sides are committed to dealing with iranian influence in the region. the iran nuclear agreement formally took effect yesterday. new information today metro will have big changes coming soon. they will be under direct federal oversight, at least their safety part will be. this move comes after the smoke- filled incident here at metro

at the l'enfant plaza station back in january where one person was killed and dozens of others were hurt. the federal transit administration will soon roll out a new plan for metro that will include surprise inspections and specific deadlines for working to make safety fbis. if metro face to comply, they could lose funding. one thing that will not change, the current administration. although metro still doesn't have a permanent gp, the interim -- g.m., the interim leader has been in place for a few months. according to our news partners at "the washington post," if there is a crash or another incident at metro, metro will be required to immediately notify the fta and the fta will decide what happens next. the fta will be meeting with metro officials within the next few weeks to explain their new plan to metro. what impact will these changes have to your daily commute if any? i'll tell you coming up at 6:30. live at l'enfant plaza metro station, i'm nikki burdine,

they add at least an hour to evacuate. instead within six minutes the fire had raced through middletown. >> i text my dad, aim so scared. where with dough go? >> she said there are cars in front of me on fire. there's fire beside me and behind me. i said you know where the road is, step on the gas and drive through the fire. >> reporter: four people died in the valley fire but fire crews say many more were saved as they worked frantically to evacuate thousands from their neighborhoods. >> the fire department is just trying to get people out of the way, you know. it's life over property. >> reporter: justin galvin was battling another wildfire when he heard middletown was being overrun. you're a firefighter out on the fire lines and your home is on fire and there's no one to protect it. >> i know. what's the alternative? bring a bunch of resources over here, save my house and have people perish down the street? that's not an option. >> i've been seeing burnt houses all day. knowing this was mine and there

was nothing i could do, it's surreal. >> also in california emergency workers are cleaning up following mud sides that consumed part of highway 58 last week no injuries are been reported but the highway was the scene of many dramatic rescues. about 2 hup cars and 300 people were left -- 200 cars and 300 people were left stranded. >> i've been through hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, but this is a first for me after 31 years of driving. >> officials say the cleanup could take months. the los angeles county department of public works estimates they'll have to move 300,000 cubic yards of mud from the road. there's a new push this morning to reform refugee detention centers in the united states. 2,000 women and children caught trying to cross the border are currently being detained at detention facilities in texas. mohammad abdallah is with the immigration center. he says the facilities are not set up to provide children with

now. this is northbound route 1 between lockheed boulevard and beacon hill road where we have power lines that are down blocking parts of route 1. sky 9 is over the scene to show us the delays as well as the trouble spots. this is northbound route 1 here. police obviously on the scene. these detours are obviously in place as well. traffic right now being diverted east but this is certainly causing a delay for folks that are going to be approaching this area. again the best advice we can give you is to add additional time to your morning commute to get to your destination on time. the detours are in place. you will be able to continue on with the rest of your route. add 10 to 20 minutes to the morning commute so you can get to school and/or work on time this morning. giving you a look at trafficland. this is south capitol street at suitland road coming from suitland into town. you won't have any troubles. traffic fill fairly light. we'll tell you about a delay on metro that could impact the morning commute. over to you. this morning leadership here at prince george's county police headquarters standing

behind one of their officers caught on cell phone video pumping out a suspect. let's take a look at the video yourself. it went viral. it was posted to twitter, retweeted 10,000 times over the weekend. police say it does not represent the officer, the department, or even the whole story. they say 21-year-old giovanti young assaulted several officers and wanted on several warrants. dash cam video released sunday shows when young was pulled over in laurel. police say the car smelled of weed and young began kicking the officer and getting very aggressive. young told the officers he was hurt so they brought him to the hospital and he was later released but this is when things turned. on his wray to booking he unbuckled his seat belt, opened door and rolled out. they say before the infamous punch, the suspect bit and spit at the officer. >> the individual was not --

would not comply. unfortunately force had to be used but was used in a way to bring him under cruel. [indiscernible] >> reporter: the suspect giovanti young is still behind bars this morning. the officer, we don't know his name but he is, we're told, a respected ten-year veteran of the police force. we'll have much more on the story and all of that video on our wusa9 mobile app. we're live outside of prince george's county police headquarters, delia goncalves, wusa9. a teenager accused of helping his girlfriend's mother murder two people goes before a judge this morning. 18-year-old gabriel straws of -- strauss of annapolis faces two counts of first-degree murder. police say the 13-year-old -- rather the 13-year-old -- struss' 13-year-old girlfrie and her mother ann anastasi decided to kill 40-year-old anthony anastasi as well as jag

lynn riggs. -- jacqueline riggs. investigators say riggs was romantically voffed with the -- involved with the older couple. the defense in the charles severance murder case could start presenting its arguments later today. friday prosecutors showed jurors video of a woman who recommend assembles one -- resembles one of the people severance is accused of killing nancy dunning leaving a rget star in the late 1990's. just behind her is a man they say is severance looking different back then. today starts the thirds week of the trial. an autopsy is scheduled to be performed on a man who died at the fairfax county adult detention center. paul guida had been jailed since october 1 for violating a protective order. he was found unconscious and not breathing saturday night and later died. his brother tells wusa9 paul suffered from serious manager conditions including diabetes and high blood pressure. >> reporter: aggressive and unprecedented changes will soon

be coming to metro. the train safety will soon be under direct federal oversight. this is the first time this has happened on any train system in the country. these changes come after many incidents on metro, especially the one here at l'enfant plaza back in january where one person died and several others were injured when smoke filled the train station. the federal transit administration will soon roll out this new plan for metro. it will include surprise inspections and specific deadlines for making safety fixes and if metro fails to comply, they could lose funding. according to our news partners at the "washington post," if there is another incident like what happened here at l'enfant plaza, metro will required to inform the fta immediately. then the fta will decide what to do next. for you, the passenger, will likely not notice any changes on your daily commute but again during emergencies, the plan is there will be a more assertive approach. fta officials will be meeting with metro officials within the next couple of weeks to explain this new plan to determine exactly when it will be rolled
