20s at 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 in the morning. in fact, wind chills will be in the 20s all day. we will talk about not one but two arctic shots. we'll talk about that and our chance of a storm next week. we witnessed some dangerous conditions earlier today, from our shehe storm vehicle. the county decided to go with a two-hour delay, even though some parts of the county saw a lot more than we did inside the beltway. >> and now, they are focused on temperatures and the potential for today's slush to ice up overnight. in damascus, about three inches of heavy snow fell. >> that's a lot more than you just got. and as topper mentioned, any slush that is refreezing, still on walkways, any of the wet roads as topper just warned us, may refreeze tonight. that's something for school

officials to keep tabs on as we go into a potential yellow alert tomorrow morning. >> reporter: still snowing heavily today, as school let out this afternoon in damascus, with mixed opinions on the students on the wisdom of going to school on a snowy day. >> i think that it was a waste of my time. >> we shouldn't have gone to school. i had to walk. >> the roads were a little slippery. but not really too bad. >> reporter: about 3 inches of wet snow piled up in this outer suburb today. but roadways remained in good shape for school buses bringing students home. kids finding this wet variety of snow makes for the best snowballs. residents scraped away slush from parking lots and walkways, before a predicted freezeup. only the most rural lanes and driveways remained covered with snow today. >> roads are just like it rained is all. comes down and it melts. >> i'll be glad when everything is over and i can go back to fishing. >> reporter: but what doesn't

get pushed off soon is likely to be a frozen mess in the morning. in this part of montgomery county. >> they should definitely cancel it, if the roads are not okay. >> reporter: and just across the county line this morning, up in frederick county, a stutter step. at least they called it delays for two hours, then reconsidered and closed schoolsault. just -- schools auth. -- altogether. with the potential for refreezing, it may dew point itself. reporting live in damascus, scott broom, wusa 9. >> they're going to default to everyone's safety every time. schools began on time in prince george's county, despite the snow. some people we spoke to weren't happy about that. others had a two-hour delay. further north, a masonry worker said he probably wouldn't have to work today because of the snow. to virginia, where school is canceled in loudoun county, where schools saw several

known. >> because i have a 7-year-old. and i also have an 11-year-old. and like i asked my son, did any sexual activities happen to him? >> reporter: that's a conversation lakeisha murphy never imagined she would have to have with her young son. >> he said no. but my son said that everybody knew about it. all the kids knew about him. so it's sad that an adult had to find out from a picture. >> reporter: that nude photo was discovered by a child's uncle, in the kid's text messengerrer app on the boy's phone. shortly after, deontae cara way was arrested for child porn and child sex abuse. he was here at the school. some of the videos were made in school bathrooms. they say cara way played santa claus at the school last christmas. >> i just feel he got what he deserved. >> detectives say there are at least 10 victims, who range in age from 9 to 13.

school officials say caraway went through a background check and it came back clean. these two tell me caraway dressed unprofessionally at school. and many parents were concerned. >> like with pajama pants. and things like that. just felt too free. like i don't know. it was just too much for me to see. and for the kids. >> reporter: now, after his arrest for child sex crimes, murphy said school administrators could have prevented this. >> i hold responsible the principal. because the principal and administration. because they should have followed up on that. shouldn't have even came to this point. >> quick correction. i meant 2014, instead of 2004. concerned parents met with school administrators today to talk about all of this and crisis counselors are at the schools to help students who need it. reporting live tonight in prince george's county, stephanie gailhard, wusa 9.

eisenhower and another virginia tech freshman, natalie keepers, are charged in lovell's death. lovell's father tells dr. phil that she was grounded before for having inappropriate conversations with men online. her dad also explained to dr. phil why he thinks nicole fought back against her attackers. >> the keepers girl, in her mug shot, looked like she had a scar. i couldn't tell in court because she had her hair over. but you can see it in those pictures right there. you can see the scar going down her face. >> now, the rest of that interview airs tomorrow at 4:00, right here on wusa 9 on dr. phil. after years of broken promises and false starts, d.c. today, announced a plan to close the decrepid d.c. homeless shelter. families will move to new short- term housing facilities in all eight wards. d.c. general is where 8-year- old relishia rud was, before police suspected she was

abducted and murdered. bruce leshan has been talking to homeless families and neighbors. he'll bring you that storying -- story coming up at 6:00. voting is under way for new hampshire in the first primary. donald trump and bernie sanders are heavily favored in the polls. but as garrett haake reports, one candidate who isn't getting much publicity is making a big push in the granite state. >> long lines for people to get in and vote. the secretary of state here predicting potentially a record turnout in new hampshire, on both the democrat and republican contests. the good news, the snow outside has been cleared off the road. people are able to get out now of new hampshire. people can come in as an undeclared voter. and they can pick up whichever ballot they want. we are seeing that happening today. good news for insurgents, bernie sanders and donald trump. on the other side, one candidate who needs a strong

station. on the first floor is where this condo is. and the family says that's exactly what they want it to be. this close to the metro. everything looked good, until this past weekend. and now they say that condo is not at all what they agreed to buy. >> it's invasion of privacy. because i don't know what happened in those bedrooms. i don't know how many people were there. >> with alexandra parish and her brother came to check out the brand new condo her parents are buying, they were shocked. >> reporter: and sunday, the door was unlocked. inside, the place was trashed from a party. >> there was an apple, turned into a pipe. and there was, i guess, traces of either tobacco or weed, left on the floor, or the counter top, things like that. there was lighters everywhere. >> there was clothing left behind. >> reporter: the mess was everywhere. >> and what was the most disgusting part of what you saw? >> there was -- i guess someone hadn't flushed the toilet. and there was also throw-up everywhere. >> reporter: her parents,

norman and lily parish, were set to close on the half million new condo tomorrow. but they're worried about permanent damage to the countertops and floors. >> the floors have been scratched up. the countertop, didn't see what was on there. it was coming off. also, there was wine spilled or something red spilled all over the carpets. and there was like a cigarette burn on the carpets. >> you don't feel comfortable coming here and calling it home. >> reporter: the condo is part of a complex, built by poulty homes, called the flats at metro west. >> hi. >> hello there. >> how are you? >> a field manager we found told us the company would make it right. >> reporter: now, vispoken to norman parish over the phone. he did not want to do an on- camera interview. but he said the company has apologized to him and agreed to replace some items. but he said, look, i wanted to buy a new condo. and this is not new. they're still trying to work

things out. a spokesman for poulty said they have talked to the customer and they have rearranged and delayed the closing dates. they're trying to work things out. reporting live from fairfax, peggy fox, wusa 9. >> all right, peg. thank you for that. we're tracking metro now. and there is new evidence that more people are saying goodbye. according to documents posted on metro's website, rail ridership is now at the same level as it was back in 2004. weekday rider ship is down more than 6% through december. compared to the previous year. and rider ship on buses and trains is also down more than 5%, compared to the previous year. metro's documents say the drop was pervasive and it was not linked to any particular event or to weather. metro notes that frequent and unpredictable delays are the likely contributing factors to that decline in rail requiredship the. more video here of today's snow from loudoun county.

thick, wet flakes. commuters here, making their way along route 7 in sterling. that doesn't look too comfortable. the snow sticking to grassy surfaces. the roads however, were clear enough to allow traffic to move freely. and we were not alone. snow fell south to alabama. up to 2 inches fell in the northern part of the state. closer to home, snow fell in york county, pennsylvania. and our neighbors to the north in baltimore were also hit with a wintry mix. but of course, there's nothing like perspective, right, topper? because everybody is saying it's nothing like the blizzard that hit. two weeks ago. >> not even a legitimate storm. it was kind of nice. my favorite type of storm -- or dad's favorite type of storms doesn't really stick on the roads of. >> no one was really sticking around? >> no. schools handled it well, i thought. which is good. we have accumulations for you. you had to get out there and measure quickly before it melted. that's how warm it was. we told you that the

temperatures above freezing were going to save us. oftentimes, upstairs can support snow. but then you have to decide, well, is it cold enough at the surface to actually accumulate the snow. damascus, they are the winners. saw the beautiful video there. two inches. only half an inch in charlestown, west virginia. that's it. three-degree guarantee. i think we'll be okay today. we went for a high of 41. i know that seems kind of high. but it got kind of close to 40 today. we'll let you know how you did at 11:00. live outside, we're 38 now. dew points in the upper 20s. so slightly dryer air has moved in. winds now north/northwest at 10. such to indicate that we're going to see a little colder air tonight. we're not looking at a flash freeze tonight. but there will be slick spots. and i'm even more concerned about the next batch of showers possible overnight. right now, nothing quiet.

up into pennsylvania. we'll zoom in a little bit. we had a sprinkle a little bit ago, around silver spring. now it is gone. we have partly sunny skies across the board. so temperatures will be below freezing across the burbs. bus stop temperatures, 26 to 34. but given the winds tomorrow, dress for the teens. pretty cold day tomorrow. just kind of a harbinger of how cold we're going to get. into the week and weekend. slick spots wednesday morning. so there could be black ice. and also could be because of little areas of snow showers overnight. and arctic air arrives thursday and sets up camp right on through monday morning of next week. we have a prolonged period of temps below freezing. get ready to open up your cabinet doors. under your sink. no real problems but temperatures are below freezing. 35 till downtown. i think that's a little warm, quite frankly. that in manassas. 31 in fairfax. and 31 also in silver spring. you see the snow showers move

across overnight. and that's why we're thinking about extending the yellow weather alert. even by 6:00 a.m., you folks in la plata, andrews, calvert county, st. mary's county, could have a little coating. and that's not what you need as you try to get to work monday morning with temperatures around 30. by 9:00, it's gone. temperatures in the upper 20s and low 30. and by 1:00, fair amount of sunshine with temperatures generally in the upper 30s to near 40. it's going to snow until further notice, west of the divide. oakland, you might make 20 for a high tomorrow. day planner looks like this. 32 to start. 33 at 9:00. 36 at 11:00. and 39 at 1:00 p.m. but it will be breezy. dress for the 20s. arctic air. real arctic air arrives. only 30 for a high on friday. next seven days, snow showers possible on saturday. kind of a reinforcement of the arctic air. only 23 for high. 24 for valentine's day. next storm, monday night into tuesday. could be snow, could be snow and rain. could stay to our south.

models are not in agreement. >> topper, thank you. big news we're following internationally tonight. at least 10 people have been killed. 17, critically injured after a head-on train collision in germany. >> the german transport minister says the trains were traveling about 60 miles an hour before the crash, southeast of munich. now, authorities say it is unclear why those trains ran directly into each other on the same tracks. the two engineers of the trains appear to be among the dead. investigators will be studying two of the three data recorders that have been recovered so far. investigators, trying to determine whether a man in india was killed by a meteorite, a four-foot-deep crater was found in the ground, near the body of a bus driver. if confirmed, this would be the first recorded death from a piece of falling spacerock, in nearly 200 years. this happened saturday. experts say meteorite deaths are extremely rare because the rocks usually burn up in the

florida senator bill nelson, calling for the ntswb to investigate the cruise ship. frightened passengers reported 30-foot waves crashing into the boat. deck chairs got tossed about. senator nelson questioning why the ship would go into a storm that had been forecast for four days. in tonight's consumer alert, the center for auto safety is suing the department of transportation for failing to create a surgable database that you can use to search for safety defects. now, the consumer group is accusing the department of transportation of violating a law that directs the agency

secretary to make all the communications available for automakers to dealer and car owners of the safety defects by make and model and year. you are supposed to be able to search that easily. cis says the agency's current database does not meet the standards of law. there are a lot more aviators crowding the skies these days. the fbi counts more than 325,000 registered drone owners in the united states. that is more than the number of licensed pilots. the agency says that figure might actually be higher because most drone operators own more than one of them. poor holiday sales have pushed sears to close 50 more underperforming stores. the retailer shuttered hundreds of locations in the past few years and may even consider selling off its auto center business. well, coffee and chocolate. nothing quite like it to get your heart beating a time or two on valentine's day. so starbucks is brewing up

police say he had nude photos of minors on the mobile app kick. >> that's how authorities caught 22-year-old deontae caraway. the principal volunteer, now facing multiple counts of child pornography. parents say they are sickened with the thought of caraway communicating with their kids online. >> while standing here, i downloaded the kick app on my cell phone, using a fake user name and phone number. and that is a problem with arps like -- apps like this. you can be anyone you want to be. >> reporter: kick found to be a way for communication for 22- year-old deontae caraway. caraway worked as a volunteer. >> check their phone. you trust them, but you can trust them to a certain extent. but chicago your kids' phone.

check them. >> she couldn't say it enough. not as much upset with the app kick, but with those parents who still don't monitor their children's social media kick. sharing pornographic images. kick is also where authorities believe eisenhower met nicole lovell in the murder case. an upper marlboro man was arrested for using kick to solicit sex from a 12-year-old on its website. the app boasts 12 million users, with over 40% of them teenagers or young adults. they tell our sister station, kick is one of the many apps he warns parents about. >> from exploitation to overseas terrorist recruiting is happening on applications like this. >> i don't trust nobody anymore. >> if you feel your children

so a bethesda man cell phone, finally cooling down after hundreds of people text him, saying i want a free burrito. >> could you imagine that happening to your phone all day long? it started when chipotle closed their stores during lunch monday, to retrain people on safety measures. then to make up for it, they offered free burritos for customers who texted a promotional number. but as jan jeffcoat tells us, one digit made all the difference. >> my none -- phone number is 888-222. >> he sure has an easy number to remember. >> so i'm sitting at home, minding my own business at noon. then all of a sudden, i get a text that says, rain check. and i text back, question mark. and the person texts, where is

my burrito? >> text rain check to 888222 and you get a tupon for -- coupon burrito. but those customers with that area code who added an extra 2 got him. >> as many texts as he's gotten, he should have gotten a free burrito for every text he got. >> sounds fair. >> henry did contact chipoatdly you -- chipotle because he wanted customers to get their deal. >> i was feeling badly for all of these burritoless folks and my phone battery was dying. >> he offered to give chipotle the numbers of all 300 people or so who texted him. the restaurant did not take them, but they did offer him four coupons for free bur identitiy -- free burritos.

earlier. but still, there will be thick spots. bus stop temps, 26 to 34. then some slick spots in the morning. and that arctic air arrives thursday, sets up camp. it's going to be cold here, thursday through monday morning. probably below freezing, thursday through monday morning. 10:00 tonight, no real problems. temperatures, though, flirting flirting with 30. so we're looking at slick spots. maybe 32 from frederick. temps quite high. 30 in gaithersburg. 31 in silver spring. and about 32 in dumfries. notice the snow showers that roll through overnight. they roll through from fairfax and montgomery, they cross 95 around 4:00. and end up in southern maryland about 5:30. this will cause problems if this were to come topaz. we'll keep a close eye on that. temperatures above freezing. you look at the shades of blue, it's a healthy little snow shower. then it gets out of here pretty quickly. by 9:00, we're done. temperatures low 30s.

there is a new sport popping up everywhere, from kids birthday parties to social media. >> maybe we'll see it here in the studio one day. players aren't just having a ball, they're wearing one. mark albert explains. >> when these players face off, they get knocked off their feet. it's a new sport called bubble soccer. and it's a big hit. >> it's hilarious. >> this is actually a great game. if there was a league, i'd for sure be signing up for it. >> reporter: after seeing it on social media, steve put a team together. >> they have these videos of people getting knocked out. and who doesn't want to do that on a saturday? >> like traditional soccer, the goal is to get the ball in the net. although at times, it looks less like soccer and more like bumper cars. despite appearances, organizers say it's mostly injury-free. >> they just get up laughing.
