we are following breaking news this morning out of norfolk. a police dog died during an officer- involved shooting overnight. investigators shot the suspect, who's in the hospital this morning. let's get right to 10 on your side's rico bush who's off virginia beach boulevard with the details. rico. after 7 hours of unsuccessful negotiations, man shot and killed a police k-9, forcing officers to

before 6 p.m. sunday evening, police were called to the 1100 block of land street for a person with a weapon. once on scene police were advised that a woman and her husband were involved in a domestic disturbance and her including abduction, robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and brandishing of a firearm were secured for the man based upon the domestic disturbance. the man barricaded himself inside his residence alone. police armed with a gun exited man to drop the gun and surrender. the man instead opened fire and to sentara norfolk general hospital with serious injuries. the police k-9 was taken to other injuries reported and no further information is available

one-point-three billion dollars. lottery officials say that is what the powerball jackpot will be for the next drawing on wednesday. it's the biggest jackpot in lotto history. it started with a mere $40-million-dollar on november 4th. about 95-percent of tickets are quick- picks, where people use the computer generated numbers. the huge jackpot is making us all dream about what we would do with so much money. if the winner opted for the lump sum, they would get a little more than $800 million dollars. however, about 40-percent of that goes to federal income taxes. and just because no one won the big jackpot saturday, doesn't mean people didn't take away other big prizes. the virginia lottery say someone won $1- million dollars after buying a ticket at "convenience on the go"

in suffolk. two others won $50-thousand dollars after buying tickets at 7-eleven stores in hampton and suffolk. happening today, the man accused in a deadly bar fight, is expected to be in court for sentencing. last year, ronnie cisko pleaded guilty to voluntaly manslaughter. he admitted to killing charles setchell at zino's restaurant on old george washington highway in chesapeake. investigators say the two got into a fight over football. cisko could get up to 10 years in prison. we could learn today if the supreme court will take up former governor bob mcdonnell's appeal. on friday we told you the court was deciding which cases to hear. if justices decide not to hear mcdonnell's corruption case, mcdonnell will go to prison to serve his two-year sentence. in september 2014 a jury found him and his wife, maureen, guilty of accepting gifts and loans from a wealthy business man in exchange for political favors. we will let you know as soon as we hear any information about the supreme court's

jury selection is expected to start today for one of the cases in freddy gray's death. officer caesar goodson faces second degree murder, the most serious charges of the six baltimore officers on trial goodson was driving the van when gray suffered a spinal cord injury. he is the second officer to go on trial. officer william porter was the first, but his trial ended in a hung jury, so he has a retrial slated for june. also happening today, tonya couch, the affluenza teen's mother, is scheduled to have a bond hearing. the texas mother is expected to ask a judge to reduce her bond. right now it's set at one-million dollars. her attorneys believe that's too high. couch is accused of helping her son ethan escape the country to mexico. investigators are looking into whether he violated his probation. ethan drove drunk in 20-13 and killed people. in what is now an infamous defense, his lawyer argued ethan was too rich to know the consequences of his actions.

land policies is still going on this morning in oregon. the small group seized a building in the malheur national wildlife refuge on january second, and haven't left since. the armed protesters are calling for more supplies as they enter the second week of their occupation. the group looking for more food, water, cigarettes, and other supplies. their leader is ammon bundy. he says the group has no plans to leave anytime soon. bundy says his group will leave when there is a plan to turn over federal lands to locals. looking ahead, president obama's final state of the union address is tomorrow evening. according to reuters, white house officials say the speech will be optimistic. it will be less of a laundry list of plans, and more about the big-picture view of our future. he is also expected to talk about his recent strategy on gun control. you can watch the state of the union right here on wavy t-v 10 starting at 9 p-m. it will be followed by the republican response. there's a growing interest in guns here in

a record crowd packed the norfolk scope arena over the weekend for the showmasters gun show. 5-thousand people attended - that's double the amount of people last year. the foot traffic is just one sign of a growing interest. the owner of a gunshop in newport news says he's seen an increase in people shooting guns, buying guns, and enrolling in concealed carry permit classes. collett. let's get another update on an officer- involved shooting in norfolk. officers tell us a suspect, barricaded in a home, came out shooting and killed a police k9. officers fired back and seriously injured the man. this first started along land street as a barricade situation early last night. 10 on your side's rico bush is live near the neighborhood. rico you just learned the name of the police dog. after 7 hours of unsuccessful negotiations, man shot

we're back now with a story about a brave girl who saved her grandmother. lonzena hankins said she would not be here today if it were not for her granddaughter sarai. hankins spent the weekend with her five year old granddaughter at her apartment home in norfolk. hankins has diabetes. early yesterday morning she said she felt her sugar levels drop and tried to warn sarai. her granddaughter found her cell phone and quickly called for help. then her didnt respond

daddy." 1:59:09 the family tells 10 on your side rescue crews got there quickly but could not get inside the building to help. capt. wayne oporto/ norfolk fire dept. c0039 3:20:27 "we used the lock box key that the apartment provided for us and that didnt work on the door." 3:20:32 sarai's father called back and told his daughter to walk down the hallway and use the elevator to let get rescue crews in the building. she made it and guided crews back to her grandmother. 10 on your side is working to learn why the key for first responders did not work at the senior living after a shooting in hampton. it happened last night at the colonial landing apartments off kecoughtan road, near wythe parkway. one neighbor told 10 on your side, he hit he floor when he heard several gunshots outside his window. when he looked up the whole complex was empty. police say they found 2 men and a woman with gunshot wounds. paramedics took them to a nearby hospital. they should be okay. dangerous around here." 17:20:08" police have no motives or suspects at this time. call the crime line if you have any information in this case. developing news in philadelphia, tensions remain high after a new threat against police officers surfaced. the department is investigating a tip from an anonymous person who said, "the threat is not over" and three "radical" shooters are still on the loose. the information comes after police charged edward archer for shooting officer jesse hartnett. investigators say archer confessed and pledged his allegiance to isis. the tipster said archer is part of a larger group, and that police in philadelphia need to be careful. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he has no intention of pushing lawmakers to approve new war powers to fight isis. senator mcconnell says he fears the president's request could "tie the hands" of the next president. president barack obama proposed a three-year authorization. lawmakers on the hill

another police k-9 died over the weekend in ohio after a shootout at a grocery store. police say it started saturday as a burglary, and the suspect starting shooting at police. their police dog jethro got hit three times. the bullets missed his vital organs and bones, but hit him in the muzzle. it caused his brain to swell, and the dog later died yesterday. the police k-9 association posted this picture saying rest in peace jethro.
