rico bush continues our team coverage now, live in virginia beach. he's been talking to crews working to find out how their preparing for the winter storm. rico - don, brandi, virginia beach crews have really been working around the clock making sure roads are safe for drivers once the storm its. the process is long and exhausting, but officials at the virginia beach public works department were kind enough to show us how it all works. driving in a winter mix of rain and sleet can turn the roads into a

motorists. aaa reminds motorists of basic safety tips for driving in wintry conditions. drivers are urged to heed the following tips: buckle up! no matter the weather, be sure everyone's in seat belts or child restraints. winter weather driving kits should include a blanket, ice scraper, flares/reflective triangles, flash light (with extra batteries), jumper cables, bag of abrasive material such as cat litter, shovel, cloth or paper towels, first aid kit, bottle of water and cell phone with a full charge. if you start to skid, stay off the brakes and accelerator and don't shift gears. make smooth moves. slow down, leave plenty of following distance behind the next vehicle - unnecessarily puts you at greater risk of hitting a patch of ice between lanes that may cause you to lose control of the vehicle. beware of bridges and overpasses. bridges, areas under them and overpasses freeze faster than other road surfaces. no cruising. don't use cruise control in precipitation and freezing temperatures. for the latest updates on the forcasts in hampton roads. live in virginia beach, rico bush, 10 on your side. n-c-d-o-t is doing the same thing to our south. crews already applied salt brine to many interstates and primary roads. north carolina is facing a big threat of ice and sleet, which can make travel very dangerous. governor pat mccrory recognized that yesterday when he declared a state of emergency. "with lower temperatures that sleet and freezing rain will accumulate as ice making the roads very treacherous, and coating trees, and possibly having an impact on our power." dominion virginia power says it is ready if ice or high winds become a factor in the commonwealth. dominion says they will send additional crews to high impact areas, and most employees will work around the

"they have to be prepared with all kinds of equipment they may need. for example, you may see them with replacement poles or transformers or fuses, but they'll also have chains on their tires and ice cleats so they are prepared to drive anywhere, walk anywhere, climb poles anywhere they need to go to get the lights and heat back on for you." dominion has already made arrangements with crews from other areas of the country that can help if needed. travel impacts. all across the east coast, the winter storm is affecting how people get around. we'll explain how it's changing some services in hampton roads. plus, new information about a deadly air force crash. we know more about the pilot and what was happening before the aircraft went down. and here's a live look at interstate 81 in the

say he got there. people in richmond are bracing for some record snow fall. 10 on your side's evan armour has a look at how crews in the central part of virginia are getting ready. outside media we are a few hours out from the snow, but preparations are already underway. vdot is asking people to stay home once

working on 12 hour shifts, vdot says they are in go mode and there are 15hundred people working behind the scenes. all state police troopers are on stand by. the last time richmond got this much snow was way back in 1993. reporting in richmond evanne armour. back to you, we have new information about a deadly f-16 crash in central arizona. we first told you about this last night. officials says the a pilot from the taiwanese air force crashed the f-16 near bagdad, arizona, during air-to-air combat training. the pilot was stationed nearby at luke air force base. officials say the pilot dead in the crash, after something went wrong during training. the f-16 is a multi-roll aircraft, and training

1:37 - 1:49 runs 12 s/sheriff john mehr/madison county sheriff's office "it's tough on law enforcement and the rescue and the firemen and everybody that's been out there. it's tough because you give your heart and soul, and we're human, too." the medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine how the boy died. a massive water main break shut down part of a busy highway in hampton last night. the break sent water and debris spilling all over mercury boulevard between cunningham drive and saville row. about a dozen businesses lost water, some even had to close early. a massive sink hole caused the break. crews worked late last night and into this morning to repair it. any residual water could create some slippery spots this morning, so be careful if you're driving in this area. now to winter weather and its impact on travel across the east coast. in addition to thousands of flights that are cancelled, bus and rail travel is delayed or cancelled. the

double check your schedules. greyhound service in hampton roads is affected. that includes routes beween norfolk and virginia beach, and between norfolk and new york. amtrak is modifying its northeast service, and the d-c metro is shutting down over the weekend. that's the first time since hurricane sandy. state police are urging you to stay off the roads, especially in northern virgina. these are just some of the abandoned cars from the little bit of snow the area got on wednesday. as winter weather makes its way to hampton roads - homeless youth in our area become even more vulnerable. some may have nothing but the clothes on their backs. (see-ton) seton youth shelters has two locations in virginia beach. the executive director tells us they want to spread the word that older children and teens can use seton as a resource. c1 17:57:46 - there are many threats to their safety. physical and emotional safety out there. and when the weather temperature drops, and it's cold outside, it just really magnifies all those issues. :57 seton serves youth from ages 9 to 17. there are several other shelters in the community the homeless can turn to. we have that information posted on wavy-dot-com. half a dozen states are under a state of emergency, including virginia. governor terry mcauliffe says the commonwealth is ready for the storm. we're prepared, we've got

to i've closed the state government. let's keep folks off the road so our personnel can do their work." governor mcauliffe says he's worried about virginians in rural communities, specifically those in the southwest part of the state. that's one reason why he activated and deployed the national guard. governor pat mccrory also declared a state of emergency for north carolina. :42 -:54 "with the lower temperatures. the sleet and freezing rain will accumulate as ice. making roads very tretcherous and coating trees and possibly having an impact on our power." mccrory said the state is ready for the winter storm. this includes having all state highway patrol troopers activated or on standby. chainsaw crews are also on standby to quickly clear any blocked roads. the winter storm already moved into the western part of virginia. in roanoke, forecasters predict between one and two feet of snow will fall. many schools and colleges
