our team coverage continues on the peninsula. 10 on your side's rico bush is monitoring road conditions in hampton. rico how are the roads looking? the area's snow and ice melted sunday and this morning we are dealing but those secondary roads are still slick. leave yourself plenty of time getting to your destination. here are some safe driving tips to keep in mind: make sure there is 2 or more car lengths between you and the next car don't break hard but gently to avoid skidding. turn on your lights to increase visibility make sure lights and winshields are clean use low gears to keep the traction on hills avoid using cruise control or over drive bridges and overpasses

now to the views of the snow you can only see here with chopper 10. it flew all around our area looking for the hardest hit areas. here's the view above penninsula town center in hampton. you can see the main road looks clear, but there are still icy spots in the neighborhood. and here's a fun shot of busch gardens from above. you can see the snow coated roller coasters at the park our team coverage of the winter storm continues. 10 on your side's jason marks is checking out the roads. he just left our station in portsmouth. jason how are they looking? the virginia department of transportation (vdot) encourages motorists to avoid unnecessary travel. if travel is a must, drivers should exercise caution while on roads as low overnight temperatures likely will result in icy

during the early morning hours. pavement may be especially slick on bridges, overpasses and ramps, which freeze first, and roads with lower traffic volumes and shaded spots. drivers also should be alert for pedestrians walking in roads, especially in more urban areas where most sidewalks are blocked with deep piles of snow. vdot is not responsible for snow removal on sidewalks. here are some safe driving tips to keep in mind: make sure there is 2 or more cacalengths between you and the next car don't break hard but gently to avoid skidding. turn on your lights to increase visibility make sure lights and winshields are clean use low gears to keep the traction on hills avoid using cruise control or over drive bridges and overpasses are usually the first to freeze. be careful. virginia state police are adding up the numbers from a busy, stormy weekend. troopers tell us many people took their advice and stayed off the road. troopers say the most traffic crashes happened in our area.

accidents in our area. the one in chesapeake was because of the winter storm and two others in virginia beach are still under investigation. since friday troopers responded to more than seven-thousand service calls across the state. that includes about 1500 traffic accidents and two-thousand disabled vehicles. we're working to learn more information about storm-related deaths in our area. state police report the medical examiner's office said five people died because of the winter weather. one was the traffic accident in chesapeake and four others because of hyopthermia. state police reported one person died from the cold in hampton, but firefighters told us it was not storm related. we're working to find out how exactly the person died. in total at least 30 people have died from the monoxide posioning, and from heart attacks while shoveling snow. for now -- the coast guard has called off the

missing near hatteras island. crews from elizabeth city looked for him for eight hours after someone reported him missing saturday night. the coast guard found hunting gear that matched the description of what the man had on his 23-foot boat. they haven't said if or when they'll start searching again. this past weekend's winter storm wasn't bad for everyone. one of the national zoo's panda's had a ball rolling around in washington, dc. cameras caught 19-year-old tian tian sliding down hills and frolicking around his encolsure. some even said he was making snow angels. president barack obama's dogs also had fun in the snow. the white house photographer posted this video of bo and sunny playing outside. the black and white portuguese water dogs wagged their tails and barked their way through the blizzard. washington, dc got saw about two feet of snow. the district's offial total was 17 point eight

washington post reports that number falls short compared with other spots in the area. so why the difference in numbers? the post reports weather observers at regan national airport, where the record is recorded, used an improvised technique and lost their snow-measuring device midway through the blizzard. a national senior weather observer stood by the accuracy of the reading, saying his team did the best it cound under tough conditions. this morning the two feet of snow that fell in northern virginia is still a big problem for commuters around washington, d.c. the federal government will remain closed today. you're looking live at the capitol in washington, dc. lawmakers also postponed getting back to work. the house pushed back votes including one that could override president barack obama's health care veto. senators plan to get back to work on wednesday. talking money now, many businesses are feeling the economic effects from the storm. experts say the weekend blizzard could have an economic impact of up to 850-million dollars.
