now the cleanup process begins. you're looking at just some of the devastation in the small town of waverly. today governor terry mcauliffe will visit waverly and appomattox - the areas hardest hit by the storm. the governor cancelled his original plans for today so he could see the damage and spend time with the victims. he also declared a state of emergency so that public safety agencies can make resources available to the recovery. listen to what a shop-owner on main street in waverly told our jason marks yesterday, minutes after the storm passed. well it was, there's no words to express how bad it was, it was getting dark, the wind was blowing so severly it could have been a tornado, did it touch down here? when i midst of a tornado, and

storm's aftermath. we'll keep chopper 10 up throughout the morning and show you more of the damage as we continue this morning. to really get the scope of this week's severe weather, let's look at the storm in numbers. so far, a total of seven people died this week - four in virginia yesterday and three in the south on tuesday. according to a preliminary report from the national weather service, 16 tornadoes hit on the east coast alone - 8 in virginia, 5 in north carolina, and 3 in florida. we're still waiting to see if the damage from waverly was because of a tornado. cnn reports 52 tornadoes touched down across the country since tuesday. after the storms hit our area, they moved further north causing destruction in washington, d-c, philadelphia, and new york. here's a look at just how strong the wind was in new york city. it tipped over this tractor trailer on the george washington bridge. forecasters say the wind was over 50 miles an hour

to get home. hampton roads wasn't the only place hit hard by yesterday's storms. new this morning, we can show you what other people across virginia are dealing with. in appomattox county, one man died when a severe thunderstorm rolled through the area. check out this video of the damage. the storm destroyed homes and threw cars around like toys. state police say at least four buildings are total losses. witnesses described the terrifying moments. 40 - no super mos / survived storm "he opened the front door and when he did, he said, 'momma tornado, tornado,' and he ran and i ran, and i was hold, hugging, that tree, one of the trees in my front yard." as we said earlier in the newscast, governor terry mcauliffe issued a state of emergency for virginia that means the virginia national guard, state police, virginia department of emergency management and v-dot can devote every available resource to storm response and recovery. rescue crews pulled out several people trapped in

(mathieu bonhomme/ hit by a train) "i was walking and out of no where i just got hit. this is what the waverly destructive this storm was. a viewer posted yesterday's storms continues this morning. they were so trees in newport news. no sot super c67 6:58:53 - next thing i know the tree is coming into the bedroom . mike boothe tells us he, his wife and four kids were home when a tree fell on the back of their 80th street house. the house is condemned, but no one was hurt. and on cedar lane in the warwick on the james neighborhood, the storm uprooted dozens of trees. fire officials think straight line winds could be to blame. c30 11:19:19 - it was quite the experience. i've lived here all my life and i've been around hurricanes and stuff. i've never heard the wind come up against the house like that. residents brought out their own personal chainsaws to help fire crews clear debris from the road. cedar lane was closed until 10:00 last night. hampton roads wasn't the
