The story begins. In this episode I describe how the Mahabharata begins, with the storyteller Ugrasravas telling the hermits in the forest about the great Snake Sacrifice of King Janamejaya, and how Vyasa's composition was told during the festivities.

The episodes are getting a little longer now, as the stories get more detailed. Before the book gets to the "direct line" of characters, it takes a bit of a detour to introduce some of the important ancestors in the Bharata Dynasty. These include Bharata himself, plus his ancestor Yayati (and his son Puru), as well as Bharata's descendent Kuru. The sketches are in fact quite brief, and the lengthy portions are generally about very specific aspects of their lives. In the case of...

This is the final piece that brings us around, back to the beginning. We covered some of this territory before, back in Episode 2, but at the time, it was hard to explain that Parikshit was Arjun's grandson and that Takshaka had an ancient feud with the dynasty going back to the fire at the Khandava Forest. Also, back then we were anxious to get going with the story itself, and all the digressions with angry brahmins and talking snakes only made things confusing at the time. So now we have...

This is a longer, pithy episode, covering the way the brothers decided to prevent future conflicts over their shared wife, and Arjun's subsequent adventures when he breaches those rules. Despite the punishment he receives for breaking the oath he swore, Arjun ended up having a lot of adventures and getting to know a lot of hot princesses around India. Draupadi would have been better off keeping him closer to home! So Arjun ends up coming back from his year-long exile with a new wife-- Krishna's...

This episode is the first in a series that will break away from the Mahabharata and use the Bhagavata Purana as the primary source instead. This is necessary if you want to find out Krishna's life stories. Up until the Pandavas meet Krishna at Draupadi's Swayamvara, no mention is made of Krishna's birth, childhood, or rise to power. That information is only available in other books, and the main source is the Bhagavata Purana. The first time I read a faithful translation of the Mahabharata, I...

Things get hot and heavy this episode, when Krishna plays a tune on his magic flute and all the girls come running. The association of religious devotion with carnal love is found in Sikhism, Sufi Islam and even mystical Christianity. I've always suspected that the idea was born in India as Bhakti and then gradually made its way westward through the Islamic world and finally into Western Christianity. It would be an interesting study-- the timelines certainly fit! Next episode, we'll get back...

When putting together an Open Metalcast show sometimes they take on a life of their own. While I try not to make "themed" shows some sections tend to get a bit of a theme to them. Sometimes the theme is to try not to have much of a theme at all for that section and instead throw together a lot of similar yet different musical styles together. This is one such episode where each song is slightly related to the song that preceded it. But when you have a collection of artists like...

This second episode looks at the situation among followers of Jesus at Thessalonica in Macedonia in the mid-first century. Considering the ethnic and social makeup of the earliest Christians, this episode also discusses two main problems faced by these followers of Jesus: “afflictions” and the death of fellow-followers of Jesus. This prepares the way for episode three, which will look at how Paul responds to this situation in his letter, known as 1 Thessalonians in the New Testament. This...

Here at The Open Metalcast Headquarters we usually make an entire episode in one night. We'll toil over Audacity tweaking and adjusting until the perfect episode is ready for you to listen to. This was such an instance where we'd started the episode and then forgot that we had already uncorked the metal rocket-sauce before. But lest you think that we're somehow giving...

D.C. United lost their umpteenth frustrating game this season, and Jason, Adam, and Ben walk you throw it. We talk about the contrasting games that Frederic Brillant and Yamil Asad had, and ponder if Ben Olsen could change up his starters to try and get better results. We observe how Ben Olsen doesn’t really bench players like he used to a few years ago, and we have to talk about the terrible game that Allen Chapman had (even if it didn’t change the outcome much). Over the lifespan of digital music there has been a constant desire to control the copying of the data. Various watermarking and copy-protection schemes were put in place to ensure that folks wouldn't share music. But no matter how protected the data there was always a weak link between the digital realm and the realm where you could listen to music. That was referred to as the analog hole; the moment when the digital signals become sound waves that your ears and brain perceive as music....

Here I explore Marcionite forms of Christianity, which contrast significantly to the Judean forms discussed in the previous episode. Followers of Marcion believed that the legalistic God of the Hebrew Bible was to be distinguished from the loving, unknown Father-God who sent Jesus, and that Law was opposed to Gospel. This is part of series 3 ("Diversity in Early Christianity: 'Heresies' and Struggles") of the Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean podcast.

This third episode looks at Paul's response to followers of Jesus at Thessalonica, including his attempt to comfort these socially dislocated Christians, his use of familial language to build up their identity, and his use of praising (demonstrative) rhetoric. It also begins to consider Paul as an apocalyptic Judean. This episode is part of series one ("Paul and his Communities") of the Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean podcast.

Here I set the stage for the study of specific Nag Hammadi and related writings by outlining in broad terms some common denominators or assumptions in the range of worldviews traditionally labeled "gnostic". This includes discussion of the Middle Platonic assumptions of many authors. I also deal with the importance of knowledge (gnosis) in the understanding of how salvation from the material realm, which was created by an inferior god, takes place. This is part of series 3...

News of Kicaka's death reaches the neighboring kingdoms, and precipitates an attack from the Trigartas and the Kauravas. Virata sends his entire force against the Trigartas and leaves the rest of the country open for the Kuru's sneak attack. Kanka, Balava and the twins are all recuited into the army, but Brhannala is left at home. Thus, it is up to the young crown prince and the eunuch to rescue the kingdom from invasion. As they are riding out to meet the Kurus, the 13th year of exile comes to...

Here I use the region of Asia Minor (Turkey) as a case study that allows me to outline various strands and styles within Christianity in the first and second centuries. I then go on to outline our approach to studying the worldviews and practices of Christian groups and "heresies" in the second and third centuries. This is part of series 3 ("Diversity in Early Christianity: 'Heresies' and Struggles") of the Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean podcast.

Here I discuss the Gospel of Philip (perhaps best known in connection with the Da Vinci Code). This episode deals with the author's worldview and ideas about the condition of humanity, preparing the way for a second episode on the practices and rituals that enacted salvation. This is part of series 3 ("Diversity in Early Christianity: 'Heresies' and Struggles") of the Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean podcast.

Here I discuss two main groups of opponents combated by Ignatius of Antioch in his letters to followers of Jesus in Asia Minor (Turkey): Docetic and Judaizing opponents (part 1 of 2). This episode introduces Ignatius (who wrote in the early second century) and explains the position of his docetic opponents, who thought that Jesus only appeared to be human when in fact he was a divine being. This is part of series 3 ("Diversity in Early Christianity: 'Heresies' and Struggles") of the...

Here I continue to explore Jewish followers of Jesus by examining key passages in an apocryphal novel attributed to Clement of Rome, also known as the Pseudo-Clementine writings. In particular, an opening letter claiming to be written by Peter to James and the story of Peter's debates with Simon Magus (a cipher for Paul) provide glimpses into struggles between Jewish followers of Jesus and others, including Pauline forms of Christianity. This is part of series 3 ("Diversity in Early...
