A basic guide to living independently outside the cage
I found the Bear Tribe's self-reliance guide moderately informative.
It is not a comprehensive outdoor survival guide. It is a combination of Native American spirituality with entry-level guidance on reducing dependence on the goods of the urban / industrialised world.
The copy I read was the mass-market paperback published in 1988. The original version produced by the Bear Tribe was released in 1977. I myself was born in 1990 and I read the book in this year of 2022. Survivalism as a hobby / philosophy and even as an entertainment media topic has grown tremendously: countless 'disaster porn' movies, Bear Grylls, Les Stroud, video games based on survival in a post-apocalytic world, etc. Yet, the 'cleansing of Mother Earth's that is mentioned a couple of times in the book has not as of yet come, 45 years after the book's original release. That is of course not to say it never will. But a reader might get the sense that the authors of this book resent the modern world and are patiently awaiting vindication of their ancestors' pre-industrial, spiritual, hunter-gatherer way of life. But they make a very good case against the modern industrial way of life, and I think it stands just as relevant today.
If one is already initiated into the pursuit of 'going off the grid', as it's now often called, reading this book is superfluous. For those who aren't, it must be emphasised that detaching from the industrial world isn't best attacked by jumping in with your eyes closed. I recommend the YouTube channel ReWildUniversity and any of the many SAS survival handbooks. The Internet has furnished countless sources of survivalist-related material for you, but 'The Bear Tribe's Self-reliance Book' might also be of some use or enjoyment to you.
