Understanding 9/11
Ludlow Griscom, Assistant Curator of Birds at American Museum Natural History was the leader of The Western Panama Expedition (February - March 1924). He had three assistants Mr. George Albert Seaman, field collector; J. Manson Valentine, Volunteer Assistant at Peabody Museum; and Rudyerd Boulton, from the University Pittsburgh and photographer for the expedition.
Sarah Lavanburg Straus (1861-1945) was the financier of The Straus Central African Expedition (1929) and participated in part of it. Her grandson Edward Schafer Jr. (also known as Ned Schafer) also participated in the expedition and served as camera operator. Other participants included, Rudyerd Boulton, the Assistant Curator of Birds at the Carnegie Museum and Laura Boulton. The first half of the expedition specimens were collected for the American Museum of Natural History and the second half of the expedition specimens were collected for the Carnegie Museum.
The leader of The Straus West African Expedition (January – September 1934) was Rudyerd Boulton, Assistant Curator of Birds at the Field Museum. As with the Central African expedition, Sarah Lavanburg Straus was the financier of the West African Expedition and participated in part it. The other participates included, Frank C. Wonder, taxidermist at the Field Museum (from 1926 to 1954); John F. Jennings, in charge of photography; and Laura Boulton, ethnomusicologist who earned a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to study traditional music of Africa.
