The records of Sherman Lee document his tenure as director from 1958 to1983. Because he was also chief curator of Oriental art during his directorship, these records document many of the activities in the Oriental art department, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s. During Lee's administration the museum grew in size and complexity, so the director's office records do not document all of the museum's activities as they did in previous administrations, but still serve as the central point...

This small collection includes incorporation and business records of the Cleveland Society of Artists. The society was founded in 1913 by Cleveland artists George Adomeit and Charles Shackelton, carrying on the traditions of two earlier groups, the Art Club and the Cleveland Arts Club, encouraging local artists and promoting their work. The society maintained a rivalry with the more bohemiam Kokoon Arts Club. It disbanded in 1983.

The artist John Conway Jackson was a 1976 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art. His work was marked by organic and architectural sculptural forms in sculpture and drawing. He lived and worked in Philadelphia before returning to Cleveland in 1994 where he earned a living as a carpenter in addition to creating his works of art. Jackson was longtime friends with his teacher and mentor, Edwin Mieczkowski, a member of the Anomina group and founder of the Op Art movement. Together they formed...

This collection of the research notebooks of Arthur Mayger Hind was transferred to the archives from the Ingalls Library in 2010. The collection was purchased for the library at an unknown date although it is assumed after the death of Mr. Hind in 1957. The small bound notebooks consist of the handwritten lectures, research, and observations of the Keeper of the Department of Prints at the British Museum. Many of the notebooks contain folded letters and scraps of paper containing notes and...

This collection is a small group of photographs of artists by various photographers. Some folders contain multiple images. The group was apparently a gift to the library from James Porter. All rights are retained by the photographers. The Ingalls Library keeps clipping files on many of the artists listed. This is indicated by a "see also library clipping file" note in the file name.

The collection of materials was artificially brought together from materials gathered by Harold T. Clark, the buildings and grounds department, the director's office, and possibly other departments as well. Over time the original provenance and order of the of the records was lost. Clark stored many of the records in his office in downtown Cleveland, possibly because the museum was closed and had no where else to keep them, not necessarily because he was the records creator. These records were...

The black and white photographs taken by the Registrar's office provide visual documentation of the history of the museum galleries. They provide information on special exhibitions, changing display practices, and capital changes to the galleries themselves. The photographs are almost all black and white 8 x 10" glossy prints, with only a few 4 x 5" and 5 x 7" prints. They are organized into three series: 1.) numbered galleries, 2.) named galleries and museum spaces, and 3.)...
