• REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ANTI-DISCRIMINATION: In May 2021, President Pro Tem Elizabeth Brown sponsored an update to the City of Columbus's anti-discrimination ordinance to provide protections against discrimination on the basis of one’s sexual and reproductive health decisions. This includes the decision to seek an abortion. While our code update made several important changes, the timely one tonight is Chapter 2331.01, which added sexual or reproductive health decisions, and defined that to include decisions about the termination of pregnancy. PPT Brown will talk through the implications of that code change and its protections in this current environment -- where Roe v Wade has been overturned and the six-week abortion ban has become Ohio law.
• SERVING LGBTQ+ YOUTH BEYOND PRIDE MONTH: Council President Shannon Hardin is sponsoring ordinance 1805-2022 to authorize Columbus Public Health to enter into a grant agreement with Kaleidoscope Youth Center in support of the organization’s Community Wellness Initiative; and to authorize an expenditure within the Health Operating Fund; and to declare an emergency. ($100,000.00)
• CELEBRATING EXPANDED ACCESS TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT: President Pro Tempore Elizabeth Brown is sponsoring resolution 0137x-2022 to congratulate Basecamp Recovery Center on the opening of their new recovery center in East Columbus and express gratitude for their efforts to help Columbus residents overcome substance abuse addiction.
• RECOGNIZING JULY 1 AS SOMALI INDEPENDENCE DAY IN COLUMBUS: Councilmember Shayla D. Favor is sponsoring ordinance 0136x-2022 to recognize and celebrate Somali Independence Day in the City of Columbus. Last year Councilmember Favor hosted the inaugural Somali Independence Day illumination ceremony at City Hall, which had over 200 attendees. Columbus is home to one of the largest and fastest growing Somali communities in the world. An estimated 60,000 Somali residents reside in Columbus, many of whom made their journey to the United States seeking a better life but to also add to the diversity and vitality of our American family.
• REPLACING REFUSE COLLECTION VEHICLES: Councilmember Emmanuel V. Remy, chair of the Environment Committee, is sponsoring Ordinance 1690-2022, to authorize the expenditure of $4,342,298 to allow the Director of Finance and Management, on behalf of the Director of Public Service to purchase and replace three (3) 33-Yard Front End Loading, three (3) 42-Yard Front End Loading, and four (4) 32-Yard Rear End Loading, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Refuse Trucks. The Division of Refuse Collection uses front and rear loading refuse trucks in city-wide residential trash pick-up.
• BLUEPRINT NORTH LINDEN IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT: Councilmember Rob Dorans, chair of the Public Utilities Committee, is sponsoring Ordinance 1601-2022, to authorize the Director of Public Utilities to execute a planned modification of the 2020-2022 Construction Administration and Inspection Services Agreement with Resource International, Inc. for the Division of Sewerage and Drainage’s Blueprint North Linden 1 Improvements Project; to authorize an expenditure of up to $700,000.00 within the Sanitary Sewer General Obligation Bond Fund. ($700,000.00) Blue print Columbus is an initiative to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows in the City through improving current infrastructure, repurposing abandoned properties for stormwater control and adding green infrastructure in neighborhoods. The North Linden area is the first area to begin Blueprint implementation.
