HISTORY MATTERS examines the cyclical nature of reality, suggesting that an appreciation of this basic precept can be valuable in understanding both the large events that shape our times, and the smaller circumstances of our everyday lives. It is done in a style reminiscent of the insitutional/ephemeral films of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. In fact, much of the source material for HISTORY MATTERS originated in these films, available at Archive.org, and has been repurposed here for entirely different...

In 1970, at the height of the Vietnam War and on the heels of Nixon's announcement that U.S. troops would invade Cambodia, a mild-mannered English professor at UC Berkeley completed a startling book called The War Conspiracy . Yet, despite the fact that the author's publisher was Bobbs Merrill, a major literary brand, the book never reached the public domain. Little did the professor know there were powerful forces working behind the scenes to prevent its release. He would later discover that...

In 2001, while visiting Brugges, Belgium, I recorded these church bells. The ringing seemed to come from all corners of the city. The mic (a Sony) was placed out the third-floor window of where I was staying. Recorded straight onto a Sharp minidisc. The ringing lasted about eight minutes. This is a 320kbps mp3; I've also posted an aiff.

This "song" is a frankensteinian hybridic mixture of two previously uploaded open source audio recordings: the colorado river (frogs!) field recordings and Clarence Ashley's, "my sweet farm girl". I finagled it around a bit to get it to sound interesting to say the least. I got it so the frogs seem to be singing along at times. :)

In July of 2001, while conducting research for a book project, I followed the Tour de France for a few weeks. On the 21st, for better or worse, I started recording myself while stuck in traffic. Armed with my Minidisc, I attempted to catch up with the Tour in the Pyrenees. I also recorded a portion of the next day's stage to the mountain top finish at Luz-Ardiden. I've included a rough transcription below. The first sixteen minutes are banal. Late in the file, while waiting for the race, I meet...
