Subject: Drunk, drunk, drunk Barber.
Subject: Drunk, drunk, drunk Barber.
Sound is very good.
The opening banter is worth listening to just to hear about how Barber crashed his car while apparently incredibly intoxicated.
Jam > Triumph > AC2B - The jam in is pretty short, nothing noteworthy. The only really funny thing is at :59 you hear a kid yell (after Barber has just finished his story), "I WANNA BE LIKE BARBER!" Very funny. Lots of Barber wankery in the Triumph jam. Lots of it. The jam get decent as they near AC2B but overall it's pretty bland. The 1st AC2B jam is actually very good. Barber settles into a nice riff and Magner has some good textures going. It's a little sloppy from Barber here and there, but overall this jam is pretty good. Really blissful 2nd jam here that I like a lot.
Crystal Ball - There's a little intro here, but it's barely worth mentioning. Other than that, standard. Not very well played, however.
Grass is Green - Neat little jam here. Nothing overly incredible, but very solid version.
House Dog Party Favor - "This is a song about how to get around life if it's just too hard for you." Well said, Barber. Barber forgets some of the words to the song and makes up some new words to the song. Interesting. First jam is pretty meh, and the next verse Barber does some rambling about how this is the verse about how to get around life without doing jack shit and how America is arguably a communist country. Wow Barber. Wow. The second jam is pretty good, very Magner-led, dark.
Banter - Barber just sounds trashed here, and the delay adds extra funniness to it.
Jam > Above the Waves > Triumph > Above the Waves - The jam into Above the Waves is average. It's a light little jam that leads into the beginning of Waves. I like jams into the beginning, but this one just doesn't do enough for me to be really wowed. The jam out of Waves is fast, dark, and trancy (duh). Magner is doing some leading for a bit, and then Barber takes the reins. When Barber takes over, things get a bit out there for a little while, but unfortunately not for very long. The jam out of Triumph is long as hell and pretty good. There's some great communication between Magner/Barber for a while. Around 13 minutes they take a big turn and launch into an all-out trance assault. Unfortunately, by the time the jam starts heading back to Waves, it begins to drag on a little bit. Ouch. Barber murders the Waves peak, and not in a good way at all. Barber proclaims that the guitar part for Waves is the easiest in the world, and offers for a fan to play the part. And a fan does. "Life just doesn't get any better than this." - Barber. Again. Wow Barber.
Lai > Crickets > Rock Candy - The jam out of Lai is fantastic. Along with the AC2B 2nd jam, so far this is about the only thing to really write home about regarding this show. The Crickets 1st jam is very uplifting, and quite good. The 2nd jam is also pretty good. There's a certain happiness to this jam as well. Spring '03 appears to have been kind to Crickets. No jam between the peak and Rock Candy.
Mr. Don - Pretty boring version overall, and the jam into the end of Lai is nothing special.
Overall, 2 stars. The jams in AC2B (2nd) and Lai > Crickets are very, very good, but the rest of the show is average, below average, and at times just aggravating.
