DVD Transfer 101 (Miscellaneous - Mostly Religious Broadcasts from May 1990)
(c)1990/1994 or 1995
DVD Transfer 101 contains predominantly religious broadcasts recorded to VHS; but with some interesting oddities sprinkled in. Most of the recordings were from May 1990.
CONTENTS
1. Charlie Falk Auto Showcase (Effectively an infomercial for the now-defunct used car chain. Longest footage of this broadcast (most others are roughly 1-2 minutes where the recording of Ever Increasing Faith started early). One of only two clips containing footage with what was the Virginia Beach location in addition to the Chesapeake location at the end. Recorded on May 6, 1990)
2. Ever Increasing Faith (How to Pray/Prayer and How to Do It: Part 1. Partial recording. The next-to-last service taped before Crenshaw Christian Center {pastored at the time by Fred Price} moved to their current "Faithdome" building)
3. The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show (Featured shorts include: 1955's “Heir-Conditioned”. Partial recording from the 1994-95 season {around that time was when ABC first began using a sideways cap on the ABC logo for Saturday mornings}. Heir-Conditioned was the 2nd of 3 shorts funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation)
4. Charlie Falk Auto Showcase (May 13, 1990 recording {partial})
5. Ever Increasing Faith (How to Pray/Prayer and How to Do It: Part 2 {same date}. Likely the last message {or at least the last broadcast} from before Crenshaw Christian Center moved to the Faithdome. Several clips from just after the move appear in the intro and clips promoting a crusade at Nanuet, NY's "Redeeming Love Christian Center" (pastored at the time by Clinton and Sarah Utterbach). At the close, Fred & Betty Price tease the following broadcast would be a special featuring highlights of the Faithdome dedication service)
6. Old Time Gospel Hour (Death Met the Master (guest speaker Darrell Gilyard). Partial recording. Message originally on Easter Sunday 1990. Gilyard, then the pastor of Victory Baptist Church in Richardson, TX (just outside Dallas), was apparently a rising star in the Southern Baptist Convention at this point. However, he would eventually be exposed as a serial sexual predator; when it was revealed that Gilyard had left the Concord Missionary Baptist Church in 1987 following 25 complaints of sexual misconduct there, along with other accusations and advances in Norman, OK and Garland, TX (also a Dallas suburb) and ultimately resigned after 4 other women made accusations (including one saying Gilyard raped her), though only admitting to several adulterous relationships. Gilyard then would have several other accusations levied (during which he hopped from place to place when the heat got to him) before ultimately being charged with and pleading guilty to child molestation and lewd conduct charges in 2009 (one of Gilyard's mentors, former Southern Baptist Convention president Paige Patterson, was himself ousted in 2019 from his position as president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary following accusations that Patterson mishandled the investigation of a 2003 rape at the seminary; with Patterson also being accused of helping cover up allegations of sexual solicitation by another person involved in helping start the Conservative Resurgence at the SBC, former judge Paul Pressler, by two men who were teenagers during the late 1970s). Gilyard still (having long been Biblically disqualified from any position of leadership due to his conduct) took a position as pastor of Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church (though as part of his being a registered sex offender; Gilyard was forced not to have children in attendance during his sermons per changes in his probation arrangement))
7. Tony Brown's Journal (Topic Uncertain but related to the question of the black woman's role in the problems of the black community. This was a PBS series beginning in 1978 (successor to Black Journal; which dated to predecessor NET in 1968 and was hosted by Brown since 1970); and was (along with William F. Buckley's "Firing Line") one of the few conservative or conservative-friendly series airing on PBS (Brown being a black conservative journalist and commentator). Partial recording (apparently the conclusion))
8. The Cosby Show (The Day the Spores Landed (S6E8); Partial recording. One of two Season 6 episodes where Cliff's late night snacking leads to weird dream sequences (along with "Cliff's Nightmare" 6 episodes later). Voice-over at the news report at the beginning is longtime NBC News correspondent John Palmer (having just been displaced from his position as news anchor on the Today Show, which he had been since 1982) in favor of Deborah Norville (who NBC was planning to have succeed the soon-to-depart Jane Pauley as co-host upon Pauley's planned departure at the end of 1989). The scene where Cliff, Elvin, Martin and Theo arrive at the hospital to give birth (the main plot is volcano spores landing in the water supply in New York caused the men to become pregnant {though not New Jersey, which spares Russell - though that doesn't explain Elvin's pregnancy}) is shortened to remove the beginning (where a redneck is seen in the waiting room smoking a cigar, and when his wife gets on him for smoking while waiting to give birth responds with "But I didn't inhale" {possibly a relative of Bill Clinton?}). Also, recurring character Jeffrey Ingles' answer to Elvin's question of what it felt like giving birth was apparently shortened for time in syndication (cutting his story about an injury sustained as a child). We never see what Elvin "gave birth" to (Martin: A sailboat; Theo: A sports car; Cliff: A giant hoagie and Sunkist orange soda {with the “Sunkist” taped up but quite obvious}))
9. Charlie Falk Auto Showcase (May 20, 1990 broadcast)
10. Ever Increasing Faith (Faithdome Dedication Special Highlights {same date}; Guest speakers at the dedication service include: Los Angeles City Councilmen Robert Farrell (representing the area of South Los Angeles where the Faithdome is located; Farrell, under investigation for ethics charges dating to 1987, eventually was defeated in a bid for the 48th district in the State Assembly seat given up when Maxine Waters made her first successful run for Congress) and Nate Holden; City Supervisor Kenneth Hahn (in a wheelchair after a 1987 stroke); wheeled on (via a lift) the main stage by his son, City Attorney and future Los Angeles Mayor James; longtime Mayor Tom Bradley; Kenneth Hagin Jr. (pastor of Broken Arrow, OK's Rhema Bible Church; morning service); Kenneth E. Hagin (founder of Rhema Bible Training Center; this marking a rare television appearance for the elder Hagin); Bishop Charles E. Blake (pastor of West Angeles Church of God in Christ); John and Diana Cherry (pastor of Full Gospel AME Zion Church in Temple Hills, MD; the Cherrys were vacationing in Los Angeles that week); Oral Roberts (founder of Oral Roberts University and whose birthday was that Wednesday) and Kenneth Copeland (who is shown singing part of "Majesty" during the segment featured; whether by design or not the week following the broadcast Price would speak at Copeland's West Coast Believer's Convention in nearby Anaheim). First service originally held on September 10, 1989; with the dedication held on January 21, 1990 (presumably basing on Diana Cherry's birthday greetings to Oral Roberts {born on January 24, 1918}). The Faithdome reportedly was the largest church sanctuary in the country at the time it opened.)
11. Believer's Voice of Victory (The Sower Sows the Word: Part 1; same date)
12. Charlie Falk Auto Showcase (partial recording; May 27, 1990 recording)
13. Ever Increasing Faith (God's Financial Plan: Tithes and Offerings {same date}; The first regular service at the Faithdome (which Price reiterates on a couple of occasions). During some early messages at the Faithdome, Fred Price or whoever was preaching would stand at the top of the center step platform; though by the latter part of 1990 it was more common for Price and others to be on the floor the entire time. Tape runs out before the close)
