DVD Transfer 113 is primarily a VHS dub (from eBay) of a 1995 WPIX Eight O'Clock movie airing of the original 1947 version of "Miracle on 34th Street" (one of the sponsors: the VHS release of the 1994 "Miracle on 34th Street" remake) along with a couple of snippets of newscasts and a clip of 1941's "Ziegfeld Girls"
CONTENTS
1. Miracle on 34th Street (the original 1947 film airing as part of WPIX's Eight O'Clock movie {despite being a 1995 recording based on commercials promoting shows such as "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" that began that season} and the newscast having the logo introduced late in 1994 before being fully adopted with the launch of the WB the following year}; WPIX was still using the classic "Circle 11" logo {first introduced in 1969 and used until being replaced by an "11 Alive" logo in 1976; the Circle 11 was revived in 1984 and used for its second stint until 1995. Lastly, WPIX's current logo - introduced late in 2008 - looks to be a cross between the classic Circle 11 and the WB-era logo} for the movie intro and bumpers. The 1947 version of "Miracle on 34th Street" starred Maureen O'Hara {who had just moved back to her native Ireland and was hesitant to return}; 9-year-old Natalie Wood {in one of her first major roles}; John Payne; Edmund Gwenn {as Kris Kringle; Gwenn would win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor}; Gene Lockhart; William Frawley {4 years before his most famous role as Fred Mertz on "I Love Lucy"}; with other cast members including an uncredited Jack Albertson; Thelma Ritter and Alvin Greenman {Greenman - playing a young department store Santa - made a cameo in the remake as a doorman; like his original film's character also named Alfred [possibly the same character?]}. Also worth noting is that this was the colorized version by Associated Film Processing {this was one of the first films to receive the colorization treatment in 1985 - as this was around the time cable tycoon Ted Turner expressed an interest in the gimmick}. Despite the Christmas-themed setting {including shots from the 1946 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade}, 20th Century Fox head Darryl Zanuck wanted the film released in May {the film eventually was released in June 1947}. The character of R.H. Macy {played by Harry Antrim} is a fictionalized version of real-life Macy's Rowland Hussey Macy; who had died 70 years prior {additionally; the Macy family sold off their interest in the chain by 1895} and the Macy's name would not appear in the 1994 remake {being replaced by the fictional "Cole's"; while the also fictitious "Shoppers Express" replaced Macy's rival Gimbels - which in real life went out of business in 1987}. Finally; in addition to Gwenn's victory; the film also won Academy Awards for Best Writing, Original Story {Valentine Davies} and Best Screenplay, though losing Best Picture to "Gentlemen's Agreement")
2. WPIX-TV 11 WB 11 News at 10 (partial recording; anchored by Jack Cafferty and Kaity Tong, with weather {per intro} by Irv "Mr. G" Gifosky and sports by Sal Marciano. The featured story is an interview by Mary Martin of Carlos Lopez at Rikers Island prison {in connection to the abuse of 6-year-old Elisa Izquierdo [Lopez's stepdaughter]; who was ultimately murdered by her mother Awilda a week after Lopez began serving his sentence on November 22, 1995. Awilda was sentenced to 15 years to life after being convicted of second-degree murder [the judge rightfully blasted the child welfare system and judge Phoebe Greenbaum after Greenbaum inexplicably granted full custody to Awilda despite strong evidence of prior abuse [among the critics of Greenbaum's ruling was New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani]. Carlos would be sentenced to 1-3 years in prison for his conviction related to an incident on Halloween 1995 where Carlos - in front of Elisa's siblings - repeatedly slammed the young girl's head against a wall})
3. WNYW-TV 5 FOX 5 News at 10 (featured stories include a FOX Medicine report by Liz Brown; longtime anchor John Roland reporting on Wall Street's performance - including the Dow Jones nearing a then-record high of 4000 and a partial business report on all-exclusive vacations)
4. "Ziegfeld Girl" (partial {mostly taped over and the tape ran out}; about two minutes of the medley "Ziegfeld Girls/You Gotta Pull Strings". "Ziegfeld Girl" - the second film in five years revolving around the follies launched by Florenz Ziegfeld {this film was originally meant to be a sequel to 1936's "The Great Ziegfeld", though unlike that film and the later 1946 release "Ziegfeld Follies"; Ziegfeld himself - played in the 1936 and 1946 films by William Powell - is not seen. Featured cast members included: Lana Turner {in her breakout role}; Judy Garland {in one of Garland's first adult roles}; Hedy Lamarr; Jackie Cooper; Eve Arden; Tony Martin; Edward Everett Horton and James Stewart {this film was Stewart's last before going off to serve in World War II; with Stewart nearly quitting showbiz altogether afterwards before being convinced to come back for 1946's "It's a Wonderful Life"})
