MS has made it harder and harder to run old stuff where as in the 90s during the transition to 16 to 32 bit they did their best to make things run as much as possible.

To answer Levithan's (however you spell his name) questions of why it doesn't work on real PC's.

Since 9/11 and the Egyptain Springs all these big corporations have agreed to be extra paranoid about terrorism which translates to pick on the small civilian to look like they are doing a 'good job' to the security agencies. This also means they have to make PC's be less and less easy for users so they can only do things they be spied upon and make it less tinkerable and furthermore make it so they won't WANT to do it.

PS.This also partially lead to the ending of the car tuning era where people had freedom of choices in vehicles.

This paranoia led to a two fold problem where many once existing companies jumped ship of the computer era and people going to smartphones which are easier to manage but it's a phone still and the mentality of one where you just pay and pay to keep a service going.

In other words MS and others don't want us using old stuff that's unmonitored. We could all be potential terrorists in their eyes which is for a while why MS dropped their Flight Simulator series after 'MS Flight' in 2008 because they were under increased pressure to not give teaching tools to bad people.

We did this to ourselves by letting go of right/wrong which always leads to a collapse society one way or the other either by conquest or by an iron fist.
