Tune in now as we harken back to the early days of underground radio, or freeform FM radio . I grew up in Southern California and listened to top 40 AM radio for most of the 60's. Then in late '67 & early '68 radio changed for the better in my humble opinion, when many former AM disc jockeys moved to FM stations. "KMET rose from the ashes of progressive rock pioneer KPPC in the late ‘60s. With the incomparable B. Mitchell Reed (BMR) at the helm, the fledgling FM station grew in size...

Sultry-voiced disk jockey Alison Steele on her WNEW-FM radio show The Nightbird in New York City on 2/11/1969. During WNEW's early days as a free form radio pioneer, the radio hosts were all women. 18 months later, Alison was the only woman left on the air. In addition to progressive rock music, Alison's broadcasts also featured poetry readings, Andean flutes, and Indian tribal music as well as quotes from  the Bible and Shakespeare. Thanks to Dan Gulino for sharing this and other airchecks...

Here's a rare recording of Fleetwood Mac in March of 1972, after they released Future Games and just before their Bare Trees album came out. This concert features the band in transition, still playing some of the old Peter Green classics and trying to establish their new sound. Performed at the Paramount Theater and broadcast on KISW 99.9 FM in Seattle, during The British Are Coming tour. Danny Kirwan left the band in August 1972, due to an alcohol dependency and conflicts with the band....
