Pedro Gonzalez de Mendoza was the partisan of Princess (later Queen) Isabella and fought for her in the Battle of Toro on March 1, 1476. He had a prominent part in placing Princess Isabella on the throne and served her tirelessly in her efforts to suppress the disorderly nobles of Castile with the money of the...

Fianchetto chess is here to stay! With the tremendous advance in 'hypermodern' theory during recent years, no player wishing to hold his own in competitive play can afford to ignore the new techniques which are now available. In assembling these 200 traps, the author has made a deep study of systems used by the great original thinkers of the present day -Tal, Fisher, Larsen and Penrose. Sparks can normally be expected to fly when players like these sit down at the board, and new snares and...

Giving mate is the ultimate goal of every chess player. Finding that all-decisive combination is immensely satisfying. But how are you supposed to spot a checkmate when you are sitting at the board with the clock ticking? In this guide International Master Vladimir Barsky teaches the method created by his mentor Viktor Khenkin (1923-2010). It’s based on an ingenious classification of the most frequently occurring mating schemes. A wide range of chess players will find it an extremely useful...

After 24. QXB I announced mate in 2; in reality it is mate it 3. Obviously I saw the forced queen move but for some...
