When a young man (James Mitchum, eldest son of legendary actor Robert Mitchum) comes to kill Paladin (Richard Boone) to pay off his gambling debts, Paladin stops him and tells him the story of how he faced a similar dilemma ten years earlier. In flashback. we learn how an erudite San Francisco gentleman became the gunfighter known as Paladin. William Conrad guest stars and also directs the episode.
