This set is partly from a 27th generation copy of an Underground Flavas tape out of West London and partly from a rip which had been shared on the web a few years back [and subsequently been deaded in terms of linkage]. We’ve bumped the EQ in Izotope, compressed it a touch and tweaked it for your listening pleasure. This show is a great example of why Stretch is held is such high esteem by his peers within the industry as well as the listeners, he may have been a DJ and a host, but the actual...

In late November 1995, New York witnessed DJ Premier broadcasting live as part of an all-star line-up on a classic HOT97 Mixmasters Weekend. Fatman Scoop was in charge of the presentation, all 326 ‘soaking wet’ pounds of him. Primo got busy on the decks with some truly epic productions of his own as well as some monster indie tunes from the period. Track List Special Ed – Freaky Flow [DJ Premier Remix Radio Edit / Street Version] Onyx – Last Days AZ – Ho Happy Jackie LL Cool J –...

What do we have here then? Oh just some insanely early WKCR action from back when the show was in it's infant stages and Stretch was still going by the name of DJ Skinny Bones... (quality isn't great for the first few minutes but settles down by the time the music starts) Although tons of tapes from the duo's 8 year run have been posted online these sessions from 1990 have proved hard to come by. Even Stretch and Bob themselves have been asking for them, so this was quite a find. Shout out to...

The 'Wild Pitch extravaganza' show, with MC Serch & DJ Eclipse in the studio showcasing Wild Pitch's new roster. Foul Play, Total Pack and Jesse West are all in the building to play their forthcoming releases and kick a freestyle. OC also puts in an appearance and as you would expect he stands out from his label mates by some distance. Unfortunately 3 months later - the 8th May to be precise - Serch would be on Wildman Steve's WBAU show announcing that Wild Pitch was no more and that the...

Another rare Slavin Balen 'Electro-Funk Premijera' radio show digitized from my old tapes. This one is from December 19, 1986 i was only 11 years old but was glued to his show every week. Balen drops his favorite Kurtis Mantronik, T La Rock & Omar Santana's amazing 'Breaking Bells', goes into the label-mate Tricky Tee 'I've Got It Good' produced by young Sam Sever, who later became a producer for 3rd Bass and member of Def Jam's Downtown Science. Just over an hour of the Kiss FM rap show from May 1992. Music by Lil Shawn, ADOR, Top Quality, and Naughty By Nature and a healthy dose of UK business like Katch 22, Cookie Crew and Caveman. Had to do a bit of an edit on this one as 3 tracks off Black Sunday appeared half way through side 2. Left the adverts in for additional flavour - Chaka Demus & Pliers at Washington Heights in Reading anyone? - DJ Step One

Eastern Conference/Rawkus Records artist and all round indy legend DJ Mighty Mi is the source for this guest spot recording (and two others). Milo has graciously offered up this 45 minute recording from his archives, and we bring it to you bumped em up in Izotope, adding mo’ bass, mo’ treble and generally, more dynamic frequencies than you can throw a stick at. Sadly, there aren't any mic breaks long enough to catch info with regards to when the shows are from, so no dates on these, other...

This classic is a 34 year old recording of the Frankie Crocker breakfast show on WBLS! Just like Grace Jones' The Apple Stretching, this is a beautiful snapshot of early morning early 80s New York, this time, from 1983. There may only be one Rap tune on this tape, but the recording is about much more than just one track, it's an illustration to younger generations, of how things used to be, as well as bein' a throwback to simpler times for the older listeners. In 2017, so many people are all...

For the record, French Hip-Hop culture goes back, there is a history that goes back way way further than MC Solaar. This is bloody obvious to French heads but not somethin fans outside of the country might be aware of. When I associate anything French and Hip-Hop I think of Z-3 MC’s, and the French National Anthem. I think of Melle Mels’ oh si raffine rhymes on It’s Nasty; ‘I tour around the world to make the people dance, and here’s a little message for the ladies in France. Je...

This is a full 3 Hour DJ Red Alert Goes Berserk show from one of the legendary Saturday night mastermixes on 98.7 Kiss FM. It’s one of the most iconic DJs and shows in the ancestry of Hip-Hop and Rap on the airwaves, Kool DJ Red Alert. When the pioneers talk about the golden area of Rap on the radio, Mr Magic and Kool DJ Red Alert are arguably the first names on peoples lips. Along with co-presenters Diane King and Jeff Foxx, take yourself back to April 1989. On a nostalgic aural trip back to...

Freestyles were a regular part of rap radio by 1997 but this is like a Mr Bongo regular's wet dream. It's a 37-minute freestyle session on Sway & Tech's Wake Up Show from late 1997 and the line up is immense. Kool G Rap, Craig G, Juice, Shorty Wreck, Eminem, Kwest Tha Madd Lad, Thirstin Howl, Wordsworth & Mos Def and Talib Kweli all step up and do their thing. Kool DJ Red Alert in the mix on Kiss 98.7 FM back in '94. Like the other Red tapes I've heard, there's no talking (and even some of the drops are pretty quiet) but the selection is on point. I was particularly pleased to find this treat on there though: Guru stops by the show to do a quick interview (just before Moment Of Truth came out) and then drops a few verses alongside a relatively unknown Eminem, before Defari steps up to the mic and then the Beatnuts get involved. Good times. Do things like this still happen anywhere...

Remember back when everyone complained about MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice? Ah, those were the days. This early 1991 episode features discussion of the recent American Music Awards with Vanilla Ice winning and PE and Digital Underground's non-winning nominations. Peep the surprising custom theme for PRB by Courageous Chief on side B. I don't remember it at all. We also hear the origin of G's "Mr. Softee" nickname in an uncomfortably awkward airbreak and a rare unreleased BeFyne...

It's been extended via other recordings from the same evening, and I tried to remaster them a bit… It's chock full of Golden Era classics and ‘buttery’ demo goodness, promo biz from Cage, OC & MC Serch, High & Mighty and the legendary Feels My Balls promo from Stretch & Bobbito themselves. The outrageously funny Doctor Dré was a co-presenter on YO! MTV Raps alongside his comedic cohort Ed Lover, he did a similar co-hosting role on the HOT97 Morning Show during the 90’s on WQHT. He was also the ‘Fearless Leader’ of Def Jam Recording artists Original Concept, but this recording is him in his earliest radio persona, back in 1985. He gleefully presents this snapshot of 1985 Long Island sound, with a soundtrack made up of Pop Soul and more concrete vibrating Hip-Hop. There are...

If you are from outside of the UK, this may be the first time youve heard of the UK Fresh 86 shows. These were at Wembley Arena [NB: ARENA Rap in the UK in 1986] and were billed as 'The event of the decade'. Following the Fresh Fest template on offer in the US from the previous year, and with only 16000 people witnessing what became a pivotal performance of iconic 80s artists, this has arguably become the largest and most important LIVE event in old school UK Hip Hop history, and was part of...

RRR are extremely pleased to offer another previously unheard* Stretch & Bobbito Show from 1991. This is a full 90 minute tape, tweaked and remastered to make that compressed FM vibe, sound as bumpin as poss. Filled with treats from the time, all expertly mixed, blended and cut the f**k up by one of the finest DJs on the planet. DJ Stretch Armstrong takes doubles of virtually every tune, perfectly and succinctly tearin em all up, while Kurious and Bobbito go ‘live to five’ with studio...

I’m not sure if this is a Fresh Start to the Week because it’s on GLR, was there a difference between the Nite FM show and the GLR show? They were both local London BBC shows right? There are a few pause button edits on this but the chats are interesting and the mixes from Swifty is tight, he’s fresh from his DMC win. There’s also a mix from DJ Tibbs. The Rapline competition features the RD Crew from Welwyn Garden & Freak One from Kilburn [The topic is the Frank Bruno Mike Tyson...

This episode of Mr. Magic's Rap Attack was recorded and shipped over to London for broadcast there a few days later (as the introduction notes) on Dave Pearce's BBC Radio London show. At the end, Mr. Magic notes that he'll be hosting a New Edition concert on Sunday at Madison Square Garden, which ended up being the second in a series of "rampages" after R&B and hip-hop shows that year. By the end of the month, "[t]hirteen boys and young men were indicted ... on riot,...

I got into Hip Hop and music in general back in 1988 (I was 10 years old) and before I discovered Kiss FM or Westwood's Capital Rap Show , Jeff Young was the man. In '88 he had a fairly late slot so I had to leave my parents in charge of the record button and 120 minute TDK tape. It was on this show that I first heard Public Enemy, Ice T, Chill Rob G and loads of other future classics, so salute to Jeff for playing this stuff when it was otherwise ignored on the BBC. Shout out to DiseOne from...

This is not just another old school radio show. The operating room shows from Dr. Dre are very hard to find. And this one is imo very special. It contains an interview with KRS and Scott La Rock (6 months before his death) about the bridge wars, one of the important chapters of hip hop history. Scott is dissing Mr Magic, Shan and the Juice Crew and KRS is talking about The bridge and the reason to write 'the bridge is over'. This is like a time capsule back to 1987. - Dutch

On this one, ‘directly’ Tim draws ‘the drama’ on this super energized pre-carnival [slightly paused] gem from 19 August 1994, it’s just good Hip-Hop, sadly no freestyles or interviews. Listening to the Capital Rap Show allowed alotta listeners to catch segments of mixtapes that would’ve gone unheard if it hadn’t been for Westwood. It’s On #2 is one of the many tapes that took peoples hair-lines back an inch or 3 when hearin em for the first time. Ron G feat Raekwon/ KRS/ OC...
