This set is partly from a 27th generation copy of an Underground Flavas tape out of West London and partly from a rip which had been shared on the web a few years back [and subsequently been deaded in terms of linkage]. We’ve bumped the EQ in Izotope, compressed it a touch and tweaked it for your listening pleasure. This show is a great example of why Stretch is held is such high esteem by his peers within the industry as well as the listeners, he may have been a DJ and a host, but the actual...

In late November 1995, New York witnessed DJ Premier broadcasting live as part of an all-star line-up on a classic HOT97 Mixmasters Weekend. Fatman Scoop was in charge of the presentation, all 326 ‘soaking wet’ pounds of him. Primo got busy on the decks with some truly epic productions of his own as well as some monster indie tunes from the period. It’s a rare interview with Guru & Premier, shootin the gift on air with Tim Westwood, just hours after their incredible April 1991 gig at the Town & Country Club in North London. They rock up to the studios of Capital Radio to catch up on some promo for the forthcoming Step In The Arena LP, and they’re joined in the studio by an excitable Caveman crew. There are too many really interesting topics to mention, so just listen up at your leisure. They both give Tim major propage for...

Here’s a weekenders worth of Tim Westwood, from the first February weekend of 1991, yep, that’s 28 years ago! Lowlights: The first few tunes get rinsed on both nights! Both the tapes are heavily paused and needed some digital tlc to sound good. The DJ Biznizz mix got paused too. Westwood attempts to mix 2 records together [Stet/Guy] and it sounds like the horse-racing at Doncaster! Highlights: Run DMC are in interview [pre-rec, not live in the studio]: They talk about the professional...

This tape features incredible substitute mixes courtesy of DJ Mighty Mi,  HUMUNGANOID propers to Milo for sending them over. It's been extended via other recordings from the same evening, and I tried to remaster them a bit… It's chock full of Golden Era classics and ‘buttery’ demo goodness, promo biz from Cage, OC & MC Serch, High & Mighty and the legendary Feels My Balls promo from Stretch & Bobbito themselves. Just over an hour of the Kiss FM rap show from May 1992. Music by Lil Shawn, ADOR, Top Quality,  and Naughty By Nature and a healthy dose of UK business like Katch 22, Cookie Crew and Caveman. Had to do a bit of an edit on this one as 3 tracks off Black Sunday appeared half way through side 2. This ‘Fat Friday’ Radio1 Rap Show was the calm before the storm, even though Tim Westwood excitedly took to the airwaves on this Friday, the 22 August 1997. With the Flipmode DJ Scratchator [or maybe it was DJ Giz] behind the decks most of the night bringing the heat and the energy, it was the opener for a long weekend of parties and a performance the following Monday that he would later refer to as the Gig of a Lifetime . Westwood parties at Notting Hill Carnival weren’t simply a...

There aren’t many classic live Rap battles that are recognised worldwide; Kool Moe Dee vs Busy Bee [ There’s one you should know ], or if you are a little younger from New York, maybe it’s Supernatural vs Craig G. Alternatively if you are from the West Coast, it’s gonna be the KMEL battle of 18th November 1994. The night two of the Bay Areas’ Rap crews metaphorically went for the throat. The DJs were Prince Ice & Joe Quixx alongside Sway and Tech, and the winner was, well, that...

For the record, French Hip-Hop culture goes back, there is a history that goes back way way further than MC Solaar. This is bloody obvious to French heads but not somethin fans outside of the country might be aware of. When I associate anything French and Hip-Hop I think of Z-3 MC’s, and the French National Anthem. I think of Melle Mels’ oh si raffine rhymes on It’s Nasty; ‘I tour around the world to make the people dance, and here’s a little message for the ladies in France. Je...

This classic is a 34 year old recording of the Frankie Crocker breakfast show on WBLS!  Just like Grace Jones' The Apple Stretching, this is a beautiful snapshot of early morning early 80s New York, this time, from 1983. There may only be one Rap tune on this tape, but the recording is about much more than just one track, it's an illustration to younger generations, of how things used to be, as well as bein' a throwback to simpler times for the older listeners. In 2017, so many people are all...

Nuff guests on this one: Smooth Da Hustler, Das EFX and Tragedy with Capone-N-Noreaga are all in the house and all kick a freestyle, plus there's the unreleased "Half-A-Mil" by CNN which is very dope indeed. The recording is a bit paused buttoned in places but that just means that more of the good stuff has been captured. - DJ Step One

The Wild Apache in London and on Westwood's show back in '92 when Ghetto Red Hot was starting it's journey towards certified classic status. This is quite a rare radio outing for him as far as I'm aware so big up Mr Lawson for the tape of this one. Thanks to Salaam Remi, Super Cat pulled off the reggae hip hop thing better than anyone, with only those anonymous white label remixes of Bounty Killer tracks that were around in the mid to late 90s offering anything in the way of competition. Track...

Eastern Conference/Rawkus Records artist and all round indy legend DJ Mighty Mi is the source for this guest spot recording (and two others). Milo has graciously offered up this 45 minute recording from his archives, and we bring it to you bumped em up in Izotope, adding mo’ bass, mo’ treble and generally, more dynamic frequencies than you can throw a stick at. Sadly, there aren't any mic breaks long enough to catch info with regards to when the shows are from, so no dates on these, other...

In the UK for promo on his Shoot the Pump mix LP, the DJ that used to get shout-outs from Mr Magic and Kool DJ Red Alert, The White Whiz DJ Riz is the highlight of this show IMO. The Flip Squads’ finest justs destroys all manner of styles in this set that crosses all the era and genres of ill Hip-Hop and Rap. Crooklyn Clan member Riz is one of the tightest DJs ever and this set attests to that. A 17-year-old Aaliyah also appears on this rare full 3 hour show, available here remastered and...

This episode of Mr. Magic's Rap Attack was recorded and shipped over to London for broadcast there a few days later (as the introduction notes) on Dave Pearce's BBC Radio London show.  At the end, Mr. Magic notes that he'll be hosting a New Edition concert on Sunday at Madison Square Garden, which ended up being the second in a series of "rampages" after R&B and hip-hop shows that year. By the end of the month, "[t]hirteen boys and young men were indicted ... on riot,...

Here  is a show from the North of England, specifically Manchester. The same city electronic music artists 808 State were from, they also hosted a show on Sunset in the 80s, under the Spinmasters moniker, before becoming 808. Liam Howlett from the Prodigy also presented a dance show on Sunset. Along with local legend Stu Allan and his hip-hop themed Bus Diss show on KEY103FM, Leaky Fresh and Owen D were Manchester DJs that started as The Master Jam MD’s in the early 80s. They'd played clubs...

This decent quality chrome TDK SF from 1987 is packed with tracks from Black Rock n Ron, Nice and Smooth, Kings of Pressure and the Jungle Brothers, and the only comedian I ain't never heard tell no joke, MC Mitchski! The Sunkist ad is brain-worm, but so is "Do The James Brown," so it all balances out. As well as more classics from Cool C and Big Daddy Kane just rhymin alongside Biz, there's a Pepsi Black Cowboys ad with David Bowie & Tina Turner, and a Fat Boys voiced...

This is my ‘Wu on Flex’ tape from 1995, and one of my favourite radio shows ever, due to its spontaneous and unscripted nature. It’s a famous tape and it’s been dubbed a lot over the past 24 years, mainly cos it’s RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard, DJ’ing on HOT 97. RZA, known for producing, rhyming and acting, hits it out the park from behind the two turntables, and drops a savage breaks set that kicks off with the compelling Star Wars Imperial March. Big Baby Jesus does an impromptu...

This share is dedicated to those of you know who remember this show, ‘You know what the deal is, you know what the real is’, and also for anyone that didn’t listen to Doggystyle when it was new on the racks. When old folks talk about how it was in the old days, like when they’d listen to mixtapes for a whole Summer, or how they’d play a cassette of a radio show in their car for months on end, THIS is the kinda tape they are talking about. Sorry, WE, this is the kinda tape WE are...

This is the show with Eminem and Proof rhyming over "Hate Me Now" and Redman's "Pick It Up," with recordings of Em's crank calls in between. This is around the time The Slim Shady LP dropped so he wasn't a full on superstar at this point. I had the full 3 hour show originally and posted the freestyle session back when I first started this blog back in 2009, and again in the piece I did for Nah Right in 2014. I don't have those tapes anymore but this one - just the second...
