On the 22nd February 2021 the House of Lords debated a draft of proposed new legislation on maternity rights that contained no mention of the word woman. Baroness Emma Nicholson, Lord Philip Hunt, Lord Robert Winston and Baroness Sheila Noakes objected to the language used in the drafting of the bill, exposing the institutional capture at the Office of National Statistics, and the silencing of women campaigning against the erasure of women in language and law.
