News clipping pasted on reverse from the San Jose Mercury Herald for May 19, 1938, titled "Domestic Service With a Diploma -- Housework A-B-C's," featuring an image of women engaged in household chores with caption: Housework in all its varied phases is taught to prospective domestic servants at the recently-established WPA household training 'school'. Top left, Rose Pusatero (left) and Dora Hernandez learn the technique of washing clothes. Top right, Adale Charleson [Adele Charlson], project supervisor, gives some cook-book hints to Marie Costa. Lower left, Thelma Rios (left) and Mary Gomes make a bed properly. Lower right, Miss Yerkes, northern California household demonstration project supervisor, samples the formal table service technique of Mary Mena.
This scrapbook was donated by the granddaughter of Adele Charlson. Charlson taught Home Economics and wrote a children's cookbook in the 1970s. It is part of History San Jose's Collection (Catalog ID 2020-19-24).
