Tech, as Indianapolis residents know it, began not as a school but as a Civil War arsenal on 76 acres of wooded land east of Indianapolis in 1862. The Arsenal closed after the Spanish-American War and it was not until September 1912 that the multiple-building campus opened as Arsenal Technical High School .
Warren Central High School was established in 1924 through the consolidation of two overcrowded high schools in rural Warren Township.
Originally established on the south side of Indianapolis to provide training in mechanics, drafting and the manual arts, Emmerich Manual High School opened in the fall of 1895 with the motto “Education of Mind, Hand and Heart.” In the late nineteenth century, combining academic and manual training was an entirely new educational concept and Manual was the first school of its kind in America.
The town of Irvington was annexed to Indianapolis in 1902 with the promise of a high school to serve the area. That school finally opened its doors in September of 1938 as Thomas Carr Howe High School, named for a former president of Butler University. The school was closed in 1995, then reopened in 2002 as Thomas Carr Howe Academy, later becoming Thomas Carr Howe Community High School.
Established in 1892 on the western edge of Marion County, Ben Davis High School was built to serve the small community which shared its name. It is now part of the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township.
Broad Ripple High School was originally established in 1886 with a two-year high school course of study for students in the little village north of Indianapolis. The school soon expanded to become a four-year institution and was annexed in May of 1923 to the city of Indianapolis, becoming the city's fourth public high school.
Located on West 34th Street, Northwest High School is one of three IPS high schools built in response to the rapid growth of Indianapolis’ suburbs in the 1950s and 60s. The school opened in Sept ember 1963.
Opening in 1956, North Central High School was built to serve the needs of students in Washington Township, becoming the local high school for a rapidly growing population north of Indianapolis.
From the beginning, Shortridge High School was an innovative educational force in Indianapolis. It is the oldest free public high school in Indiana, opening as Indianapolis High School on the Circle downtown in 1864. The first superintendent, Abram C. Shortridge, took the unusual steps of hiring female teachers and allowing the admission of African American students, as well as lengthening the school year from 3½ to 9 months and introducing a graded system.
Arlington High School , serving the northeast side of Indianapolis, is one of three IPS high schools built in response to the rapid growth of Indianapolis suburbs i n the 1950s and 60s. The school opened in September 1961.
George Washington High School opened in 1927 in Indianapolis in the Haughville neighborhood. A thriving and solidly working-class community at that time, the near west side of the city suffered through the years from loss of employers and n eighborhood institutions. Finally, due to shrinking enrollments, the high school was closed by IPS in 1995.
On the far eastside, John Marshall High School was one of three IPS high schools built in response to the rapid growth of Indianapolis™ suburbs in the 1950s and 60 s. The school opened in September 1968, closing as enrollments declined in 1986.
