The Ironbound Children's Center (Daycare) was the first program of Ironbound Community Corporation, begun in 1969 by parents and organizers. It had a number of locations throughout the neighborhood. This is a picture of one of the locations where it was housed, 317 Elm St. It was also located at 146 Wilson Ave.

A fundraiser for the Ironbound Childrens Center, this 75 page cookbook contains recipes from families and teachers at the Center. The name of the cookbook is "The Melting Pot" evocative of the many cultures participating in the daycare center at the time. Phyllis Jarmolowich was one of the founding parents.

The Ironbound Community School was a a parent-run oopen classroom K-8 school which became part of the Newark Public School system. Parents from the Ironbound Childrens Center began the school as their children "graduated" from the daycare program. The school ran from 1971 to 1988. Its teachers included several from Bank St. School of Education. The Newark Public Schools terminated the program suddenly, and the school was forced to close, leading to a court case and settlement. A letter from Fritz Mulhauser, of the National Institute of Education, to Tim Parsons after the school hosted his visit. "It's clear that the experience of starting the day-care center and then the school has produced community leadership of tremendous sophistication in both politics and education." The letter is written to Tim Parsons, and was included in a packet of materials during the schools fight to remain as an NPS funded school.

This was a certificate showing that Frank Hutchins took the Land-Lord Tenant Course of the "Peoples Law School". This was a special course offered free and open to the public. Frank was involved with writing and passing Newark's original Rent Control law in 1972, and remained Newark's main tenant organizer for his entire life.

Ironbound Senior Citizens Project began in 1976 to bring together senior citizens to act on their own behalf on issues that affect their lives. The project provides various services and assistance, including Meals on Wheels (limited at the beginning). A later development was the "Home Friends", workers to help seniors with light cooking and cleaning, and this is a picture of some of the Home Friends Staff with Grace Hixon, Program Director, on the left.

In 1977, Ironbound Community Corporation expanded to a storefront at 95 Fleming Ave. (East Ironbound). This ws a walk-in and referral center, and became the center for community organizing. Ironbound Voices newspaper was published from this office. This is a two-sided brochure (probably created in the mid 1980's) which details existing programs at that time.

Nearby Newark Airport admitted planes were as low as 150 feet over the homes and houses shook from the noise. The Ironbound airplane noise was the fourth worst in the nation. The first Ironbound meeting about airplane noise was held in October 1978 and larger meetings were held at St. Benedict's Church Hall.
