The Gregg Gelb Swing Band is a little band with a big sound (4 horns, a 3 or 4 piece rhythm section and a vocalist). As leader, Gregg Gelb, is also arranger/composer, tenor saxophonist and clarinetist for the band. The band plays Gelb's innovative arrangements and transcriptions of jazz classics from the Early Jazz, Swing, BeBop and Modern Periods, along with his original compositions. "Too Darn Hot", the band's third CD, was recorded live in July of 1998. It reflects the energy, musicality and love of the music that has been the band's trademark over its ten years together. The twelve songs include Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, George Gershwin and originals by Gelb.
"The Gregg Gelb Swing Band preceded the current revival of Swing Era music and styles by several years. The nine-piece group is definitely more authentic, varied and substantive than fad bands such as the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Royal Crown Revue and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Gelb's knowledgeable, in-depth writing makes the unit sound larger than it is, a feat assisted by the bold entrances, maturity and expert musicianship of the players."
