Taper notes:
For BARN214, I present to you another very interesting show that may spark some interest in various fan-bases. To start off, you've got Jason Crosby, keyboardist and violinist as the band-leader and principle songwriter. By this time had been kind of a prodigy, playing since his teens in local New Jersey Grateful Dead cover band Solar Circus, and as the replacement keyboardist for Jon Bevo in God Street Wine -- and would go on to frequently play with/write songs with Assembly Of Dust, Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, Susan Tedeschi, Robert Randolph, Jackie Greene, Pretty Lights, Hard Working Americans, Zen Tricksters, Common Rotation, Oteil Burbridge, Scrapomatic, and many other amazing musicians. And he had put togther a core band that included the multi-talented (and future bandmate in the band Assembly Of Dust, formed the following year by Reid Genauer) Dave Diamond on drums, Andy Pfaff, and Steve Finkelstein.
Beyond the amazing musicianship in the core band and the spellbinding originals, what makes this show notable is the roster of amazing guest musicians that Jason was able to call on to particpate. First off, his bandmate Lo Faber from God Street Wine sits in for essentially the entire show. Not only does he sit in for essentially the entire show, but you'll see that they performed some God Street Wine classics like Hellfire and Waiting For The Tide. Continuing the literal parade of special guests, we get jazz guitar great Stanley Jordan, extraordinary bassist Oteil Burbridge (of the Aquarium Rescue Unit, The Allman Brothers Band, and nowadays Dead and Company), groove jazz guitar legend (RIP) Melvin Sparks, sax player Kebbi Williams (member of Oteil's band at the time, The Peacemakers and future member of Derek Trucks Band), Jeff Mattson (member of Zen Trickers back then, and now Dark Star Orchestra), bassist Klyph Black (also a member of Zen Tricksters), Eric Krasno (of Soulive and Lettuce), Jordan Katz (member of 28 Orange Street and later the band Common Rotation) and last but far from least -- Derek Trucks himself.
Sometimes guest-filled jam sessions can go very wrong if there are too many people or chaos on stage, but Jason keeps the chaos to organized music at the proper ratio...and if you look at the setlist, you will see the aforementioned God Street Wine covers on the setlist, a bunch of his original songs, an Oteil original ("Butter Biscuit") and a bunch of Meters (and Meters-related) covers. This marathon show is a great one to dig into!
One more thing to mention about this recording. It was a collaboration with my friend Bill "the genius" Mulvey. He actually made sure to get there super early (during soundcheck) so that he could climb up on the venue's ladder to hang my Neumanns in a split omni configuration from the ceiling of the venue, just outside of the PA speakers. This was truly an optimal way to record there (even better than the "taper pit" in the back of the room next to the soundboard), and is just another reason that this recording shines. I've also taken the time to "time align" the left and right channels (something you need to do when you run split mics) so that the channels are properly in sync. I did have to do quite a bit of tamping down of claps, whistles, and yells. In particular there was someone who was REALLY REALLY excited for them to play the God Street Wine song "Hellfire" and he made it clear by yelling (which I've EQ'd down for each individual yell) through the whole thing. So this should be a nice improvement over other circulating copies.
I hope everyone enjoys this massive Wetlands night!!!
Enjoy!
