Laserdisc Archive

LaserDisc (LD) is a home video format and the first commercial optical disc storage medium, initially licensed, sold and marketed as MCA DiscoVision (also known simply as “DiscoVision”) in the United States in 1978. It is not a fully digital format and stores analog video signals.

Although the format was capable of offering higher-quality video and audio than its consumer rivals, VHS and Betamax videotape, LaserDisc never managed to gain widespread use in North America, largely due to high costs for the players and video titles themselves and the inability to record TV programs. However, it eventually did gain some traction in that region and became somewhat popular in the 1990s. It was not a popular format in Europe and Australia.

An extended version of the film, dubbed the "Special Edition" (currently out of circulation), including altered dialogue and visual effects, premiered at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on March 16, 2002; it was released on home media six days later. Certain shots of E.T. had bothered Spielberg since 1982, as he did not have enough time to perfect the animatronics. Computer-generated imagery (CGI), provided by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), was used to modify several shots,...

1987 Uncut Laserdisc for "Melody Time." Melody Time was released on home video in the US in 1998, 50 years after its theatrical debut. However, the US home video releases had edits made to them in the finale segment, "Pecos Bill." The cigarette in Bill's mouth was edited out, which gave him some awkward hand and mouth movements. Disney even went as far as to edit out a scene where Bill lit his cigarette on a lightning bolt during the "Ballad of Pecos Bill" song....

1985 Japanese Laserdisc for "Make Mine Music." When Disney released Make Mine Music on home video in the US in 2000, it was drastically edited from its original theatrical release. The segment "The Martins and the Coys" was completely cut and the "All The Cats Join In" segment had a scene edited to censor the main character girl's bust to make the scene less vulgar. This is the full, uncut release of the film. There are Japanese subtitles during the songs.

In 1992, the U-Sing-Along company released the second volume ("Đôi Mắt Người Xưa") of the Vietnamese karaoke series of the same name on LaserDisc, with a karaoke style similar to the previous volume. Years later, the volume would undergo a DVD re-release which would become the most common version of the volume (volumes 1, 3, and 6 would also undergo re-releases, but they are less common nowadays). Adapted from the manga series created by Minako Narita, this OVA has attracted a cult following in recent years for its unusual, heavy use of English language pop songs and general kitsch value. Due to the heavy use of licensed music and the complexities and costs associated with clearing them for a modern-day release, it is unlikely to ever see an official re-release. This is a very high quality rip of the complete OVA from the original 1989 laserdisc release by Victor, presented in 720p/60fps...
