New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Maybrook Line.
The bulk of this reel deals with the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad's Maybrook Line, a freight-only route which ran between Campbell Hall/Maybrook, New York and New Haven, Connecticut. This particular division of the railroad was beloved by NYNH&H railfans for its mountainous right-of-way (as evidenced by the profile map offered in the presentation) through truly rural territory west of Brewster, New York.
One major faux pas is made at time stamp
4:05 when listing the railroads that connected with the New York, New Haven and Hartford at Campbell Hall/Maybrook. The New Jersey Central Railroad (perhaps better known as the Central Railroad of New Jersey) was NOT one of the connections. A line that DID interchange with the New Haven RR at this location, however, and which was omitted from the roll call, was the New YORK Central Railroad. I suspect that a rough draft of the script for this film included a sloppily written "NYC" notation, which a later transcriber read as "NJC" and thus wrote "New Jersey Central" into the finalized script.
During the coverage of NYNH&H operations/facilities at Hopewell Junction, New York, a coal-and-water refueling station described by the narrator as "down the tracks" is pictured at
10:31 spanning the mainline. If this is the facility I think it is, then the "down the tracks" location is actually "up the hill" from Hopewell Junction Yard. Trains bound eastward toward New Haven, Connecticut had their headend locomotive(s) pull up to this point for refueling. While doing so, one or more helper engines would be added on to the consist's rear end--which was sitting a mile away downgrade back at the junction.
