Straight from the mind of Swedish hellraiser Psilodump, who's released on super-smart labels such as 8bitpeoples and Micromusic, as well as being part of the rather smart X-Dump collective, 'Jag Och Psilodump' is a spectacularly eclectic 6-track EP which bounces all over the map, showcasing Psilodump's distinctly weird, distinctly different stylings. Things start with 'Winds (Snabber Mix)', which is all hyper-fast drums and oddly burlesque melodies, before 'Omtanke7' cuts in, again with oddly...

Welcome to Monotonik's brand new year, courtesy of a debut release (or is it?) from Finn and self-proclaimed cosmic superspy, Aleksi Virta. He fearlessly busts out this supremely accomplished album of jazzy, dubby electronics, originally released on a scandalously limited, horrendously collectible 100-copy sold-out CDR edition, and now, thankfully available to the general public via the wonders of the Internet. So basically, we're looking at everything from the headnodding organ jam of 'Nebulae...

We're proud to welcome the debut release on Monotonik from Stefan Ternemar, the Swedish artist also known as S.T. 'Emotions In A Box' is Stefan's first set of songs released anywhere outside his own webpage, and it's a fitting introduction to his bold, melodically strident idm electronics. First off would be 'Downtown', almost Huelsbeck-ian in its wish to get straight down to brass tacks and blast you with carefully considered catchiness, heaping layer upon layer of gorgeously synthetic sounds...

We found Datassette after he linked to Monotonik from his own artist website. Fortunately, it turns out that he hearts us, and we heart him, since the UK-based artist with the retro-hardware themed pseudonym cuts up a lovely mix of previous Monotonik artists like Vim! and Braces Tower, alternating funky electronica with the geekier bleep end of the spectrum, but coming out all wine and roses in the originality stakes. Starting out with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop drift of 'Microfocus', it's...

In the form of a Valentine's Day gift to all from Russian idm maestro Sleepy Town Manufacture , which Monotonik has sneakily re-packaged and re-gifted to the entire world, we're proud to present 'For You & For Me', an entire double album picking some of the best from STM's unreleased output from 1999 to 2002, with a number of tracks specially updated and remastered for this compilation. Sleepy Town, formerly a duo/trio, and now down to a single member, are particularly known for their...

Monotonik has made it to its 200th MP3-based release (and probably somewhere over its 400th overall release, counting sublabels and .MODs), and this milestone comes in the form of Chromatic Flights' second release for the label, 'Heavy Stars Will Fall'. Florida-based Kyle Wyss follows up his 'Memories From The Audible Color Wheel' Monotonik debut with more vaguely psychedelic, beautifully phrased idm, strangely strung out but wonderfully put together. It starts with 'Found Glow', all spaced out...

A debut, then, for Florida-based Kyle Wyss, under his electronic music alias Chromatic Flights, with the floating, serene indietronica of 'Memories From The Audible Colour Wheel EP' - some of the lusher, more indie-influenced instrumental grooves we've run across in a while. Wyss is just 17 years old, and we'll let him explain: "This is my first solo EP (Memories from the Audible Colour Wheel), but I've been playing in an indie/experimental rock band for about 4 years. The first release on Monotonik for Radix, aka Mosaik, the Swedish artist who's been making a lot of waves in the PC 'demo-scene' over the past couple of years with his perfectly crafted melodies and beautifully smooth stylings. "Counting Stars" is the sound of a man who's clearly been listening to Boards Of Canada, but has seen fit to put his own spin on their innocent electronica. What with the beautifully pitch-bent lead and the hypnotic voice drifting in and out of the background,...

Oh my. Ever since we at Monotonik heard Swedish bleep-metal group Machinae Supremacy cover Chris Huelsbeck's classic 'Great Giana Sisters' theme in heart-rendingly wonderful .SID chiptune vs. Spinal Tap style, we've been major, major fans. So, after the group completed the soundtrack to (extremely fun) PC indie shoot-em-up Jets 'N Guns ( http://jng.rakeingrass.com/ ), and made the entire higher-bitrate quality OST available to fans on their official homepage ( http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/...

So, we made it - '10 Years Of Monotonik - The Mix' is testament to that. It's hard to believe that it was in early 1996 that we first started up our net.label Mono - initially as a .MOD-only label, since this was before the days of MP3s (and, indeed, of very wide use of the Internet.) What a long way we've come since then. The first couple of years, for those who recall it, actually had individual Commodore Amiga-based BBSes distributing our material as 'official distros', before FTP sites such...

Following the first Monotonik release from Swedish idm-ish artist Stefan Ternemar, aka ST, in 2003, we waited around a little, and suddenly, another EP popped up. Interestingly, although the first 'Emotions In A Box' release was very much epic electronic, almost Chris Huelsbeck-ian synthwork, everyone evolves, and thanks to guest spots from a fellow Swedish Monotonik artist (check the ID3 tags for a hint), and some new influences, the 'I'll Meet You There EP' keeps the epic melodies, but slides...

The first EP release online from Monotonik, and that quirky English idm-ster, 3818919/w, comes up trumps with some beautiful tracks influenced by everything from Bola through Bochum Welt to Plone. The lead track, "Nachos Supreme", is full of wonderfully twisty riffs and nimble drums, and "Ages" and "Cheshire" float into melodic ambience of the slightly surreal, fevered kind, whilst the final tune, "Shift-Break", uses clunks and robot voices to bring the...

As promised, and as most of you have been dreading/looking forward to, the Subi best-of retrospective has finally arrived. Throughout his 11 years making music in the Amiga 'demo-scene' and outside, Sam Brown, aka Subi, and formerly known as Subculture, has always shown originality and a doggedness that's characterised his excellent output. The typical Subi release blends cheeky samples, breakbeats, and rampant catchiness to produce something that's pretty much unlike most of the other music...

Next up is 'Oopon', showcasing all kinds of beautiful, pitchperfect chord and percussion action. Finally, we have the slightly harder, more angular 'Zzujd', before we finish out with the title...

A long, long time in the making, U.S. artist Troupe presents his first EP for Monotonik, 'It's Really Pretty Simple After All', a plain spectacular mix of demo-scene inspired electronica, soaring melodies, and beautiful vocals. Imagine, if you will, an American who has grown up and been musically influenced by the greats of the Amiga demo-scene - which this label itself was birthed from in 1996. Then mix in transcendent vocals reminiscent of favorite Monotonik releases like Bliss, and you get...

This third-party compilation is one of three put together by an unknown person and spread on P2P networks, and acts as a 'best of' for Monotonik. We decided it has excellent track choice (check out early tracks from Whiskas and Jiva in particular), plus a number of tracks only normally available in .MOD form as .MP3s, so we've made it an official release and added it to our catalog - the Internet and freely distributed music comes up with cool ideas like this if you're lucky. Track listing...

UK artist Chris Wigman is Casimir's Blake, and this intriguing Monotonik release, 'The Silence In Fragile Space', plays out like a planetarium soundtrack to end all soundtracks, echoing all kinds of gorgeous sustained chords through history. Following up a release on Kahvi, this full-length album starts as it means to go on with 'Achird Supernovae', flittering strings and depths of space to the fore. It certainly gets darker elsewhere, with 'Rich's Feyd' one of the more edge-wise, skuttering...

It's been 10 years (at least) since Hoffman, aka Dreamfish, aka Hydlide, was hanging out on the UK Amiga .MOD scene with h0l, Subi, Twilight, and a whole bunch of the other Mono founders. It's been 5 years since the first ever release on Mono was a remix of "Time Slip" by Hoffman. It's been 4 years since the release of the original "Unreal" .MOD (grab here ),a truly kickin piece of supa.loop.led d+b action on Mono211. And now, the present day, whereby the still.got.it...

It's a pleasure to be able to put out the second Monotonik release from the Russian duo, Sleepy Town Manufacture (who are newly expanded to three with the addition of a new German-based Russian member.) They ended up tapping their friends, both 'famous' and up-and-coming, to remix their dreamily ambient 'Latatoo' track, which is featured on the forthcoming "Cottage Industries 3" compilation on the ever excellent Neo-Ouija . And, as the icing on the cake, Sleepy Town have complemented...

Monotonik is _very_ proud to present an exclusive 6-track EP from Finland's Lackluster, aka Esa Ruoho, an artist we've been releasing (as Distance) since way back when we were putting out .MODs, and have seen go from the limited-edition "CDR#2" on Monotonik (our only physical release ever) to critical acclaim through his 12" and album releases on the UK's DeFocus Records, and more recent vinyl and CDs put out through Rikos, Merck, and U-Cover, to name but a few. "One-Offs...

We've known of Finnish idm artist Tweeter for several years, stemming from his association with former Monotonik artist Substance's .MOD label Voodoo, and have previously been delighted to release his gloriously smooth electronic stylings on the label. Now, the notoriously painstaking artist formerly known as Tweeter is called Planet Boelex (actually the name of his last release on Monotonik), and he makes a triumphant return to us with the 'Sinking In The Soup EP'. So, we start this particular...

It's difficult to find anything to say about this tune, because it's just so.... mmmmm. The drums, the melodies, the style seem to mesh like Sabres of Paradise managed so well on "Smokebelch", and Substance is truly the jewel in Mono's crown. Just you wait til we start releasing his drum n bass tunes, then you'll truly freek out. :) Overstated, us? never. ;)

He's done it again. He's found some vocals no-ones sampled yet (as far as he knows). He's sped them up and pitched them to infinity. He's laid a break over a kickdrum and he's put a synth stab on every half beat. He's also come up with one of the worst dinosaur-related puns ever. Yea, verily DJ Ninjamachine has entered the building, bringing with him yet more of the good mindless happy stuff. And in time our history Will know us as shooting stars I ask for nothing more Than a place to lie down...

Sliding lithely out of Russia, we're delighted to present a split EP by Stanislav "Slam" Vdovin and Eugene Martynov, also known as Unit21 , with whom we've been talking to for some time after we met them through their friends, multiple Monotonik-releasers Sleepy Town Manufacture . Unit21's blend of beautifully understated, melody rich electronics is something to behold indeed, and we ended up settling on this small, but perfectly formed 2-track EP. So, basically, we have 'Lain: I...

From the depths of the Straits of Atlantis, the artist known as Octopus Land has surfaced, and with him he brings, entangled in his nets, a veritable bounty of sweet, jittering idm melodies, and dark, underwater fruits of the sea. For starters, 'Tortoise Catch' twins the random stomp with the sweet orchestra of the dolphins, epic and joyous, before 'Voave222' hesitantly taps out a morse code of undersea distress, all plaintive against the blackness of the deep, dark ocean. Next, Octopus Land...

We're proud to present the debut release on Monotonik from Northbound, a band consisting of Mikko Roisko and Olli Jäderholm, self-described as "two guys from southern Finland, soon to reach their mid-twenties" - and 'Landscapes Of Late' is gorgeous live instrument-filled nu-chill groove. We ran into Northbound through their oblique connections with the TPOLM demo-scene crew and IRC channel, and they explain of their project: "We have both been making music for about 4 years now,...

And this is where Monotonik and monoRAVEik really part company. Cosmopolitan he may be, but we just can't see h0l seeing this one as the right style for the IDM-ness that our beloved parent specialises in these days. Ladies and gentlemen, leave your brain at the door and grab a bottle of water. It's raving time! "Relentlessly Upfull" is just that. One hundred percent happy happy happy. Piano-riffs and synth-stabs ago-go with a few helium vocals and a diva (Penny Ford in this case)...

When Finnish-born, currently Irish-based idm veteran Lackluster, aka Esa Ruoho, insistently pinged us over IM to release this stunning single track, 'Zero Million Barrels Of Oil Per Day', he was keen that it go live before the global oil market reached its peak. We're not sure we actually managed that, but heck, we figure this almost 10-minute track will convey its mood perfectly well, separately of the amount of crude bubbling out of the ground at any particular speed. Esa's official site...

The return of the Mack, wouldn't you know it, and it's with a brand-new composed jungle track. Mortimer reckons b-boy science is the way to go, but the drum n' bass still puts us in our place, huh? Please note that this is numero duo in the 'mono-back-on-track' series. And watch out for more Mortimer Twang stuff on Mono soon. If you would.

He had a part in the first ever Mono release back in 1996, and he's being hanging around with us ever since, poor guy. Now, UK composer/DJ Hoffman (formerly known as Dreamfish, fact-fans!) has been good enough to provide us with the first of two superior DJ mixes. This one fits squarely into the Mono211 'breakbeats' peg with some super-hot, cutely mixed nu-skool breaks action. So, we're talking Waveform, Uptown Connection, Ils, BT/Hybrid (with superlative Kirsty Hawkshaw vocals), and even Luke...

This time, a Monotonik debut for Finnish graphic artist and musician Flutterspot, and pretty much his first music release anywhere, with the gorgeous electronic tones of 'Labmat'. What do we like about this? Well, for starters, 'Daily Sway Of Everything (That You Touch)' is satisfyingly chunky, before 'Sky So My' segues into some smartly rotating beats. Then, there's 'Liihko Hymn', which is layers and layers of sound in an almost shoegaze fashion, but with firm rhythms layered on top, before...

Substance strikes back with a Mono release which isn't minimalist trance. :) In fact, Substance's style extends way past tranceland (check out the melodic junglism of his Assembly96 tune, "The Hub", or indeed "Drum+Bass Frenzie"), and this time he's cooked up an intriguing tekno with metal breaks and frazzled synths piece, inspired by a certain Aphex Twin collaborator, Mike Paradinas. Nice, sorted, and damn original. Oh, and the title means something very silly in a...

Full of chanted and whispered vocals and an evocative, almost shoegaze-centric attitude to idm/electronics, 'Down With Ghosts' starts with the semi-conscious drawl of 'From A To Z',...

A little more of the mixed-up-ness for your tired brain, and perhaps the best mix Monotonik's released so far, Slovenia's DJ Nova presents us with a mix of classic older Monotonik tracks from Lackluster/Distance, Prob, Jiva, and others.. In the style of his previous mix for Mono211, but much more laidback, "Oldskoolmonotonikantiks" uses soundscapes, cut-ups, and ethereal voice-overs to really mix things up intelligently, and the selection of tracks is pin-point sharp. So, a long-awaited Monotonik solo debut from New Zealand's Michael Upton, aka Jet Jaguar, with the beautifully minimal, almost dub-infused electronica of his 'Biddy Bids' EP. A measure of how top-quality we think Twilight's tune would be the fact that we were actually holding back on releasing it, cos we wanted to try to put it out on vinyl. But that's going to be a while in coming through, and we've got some more MIDI-based stuff to concentrate on trying to get released first, so in the meantime we're going to release this on Mono elektronikally. Enjoy the quality. :)
