This is a fragment of a film that D W Griffith made in 1909. I wish I had the full video. I would love to finish adding music to it. In this one, though there is no indication of Christmas I have taken a cue from Santa and chosen Christmas music from the era. The title card says "A Trap for Santa" but advertising called it "A Trap For Santa Claus" Here is how IMDB describes the full plot "The children set a trap for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, knowing he has to come...

The Mended Lute, directed by D.W. Griffith (1910) is a fragment. It is a story of American Indians, but no different than the similar stories he had done about whites. Father trades his daughter for blankets etc. Her true love captures her back from her new husband and a canoe chase ensues and the picture ends. It is interesting onlky as history. there.

Lonely Villa was directed by D W Griffith in 1909. If you look it up on Wikipedia or IMDB it is listed as "The Lonely Villa" but the name on the title card is as presented here. An interesting drama with a simple plot. Watch the tramp who first visits the house with the letter. You can almost hear him taking vocal directions from Griffith.

Ramona was directed by D W Griffith in 1910. It is the story of a Mexican girl (played by Mary Pickford) and an Indian boy in an ill-fated love affair. It demonstrates Griffith's sympathy for the Indian in a time when such sentiments were not so widespread.

The New York Hat was directed by D W Griffith for the Biograph Studio in 1912. It has many of Griffith's stock players in it. You may spot Mae Marsh as a gossip or Lillian Gish as a customer in the store but the main roles are played by Lionel Barrymore as the pastor and Mary Pickford as he girl. The script was written by Anita Loos. It is a gentle story with a clear moral, but I thought the real star had to be the hat.

The Sunbeam was directed by D W Griffith in 1912. When a film called The Sunbeam refers to a little girl with a dead mother, you know you are in for a bit of sentimentality and so you are. But given that, it is a neat little film with an interesting picture of life in a tenement house and the social mores of the day.

The Redman's View was directed by D W Griffith for the Biograph Studios in 1909. (It is referred to as The Red Man's View in Wikepedia) Consider that Griffith made between 2 and 3 of these pictures a week, it is incredible to consider how much he must have worked. These stories had to be telegraphed to under 20 minutes and made clear without the use of sound. This one is interesting for its sympathetic portrayal of the Indian. This in a time when most movies were showing Indians as savage...

A Beast at Bay was directed by D W Griffith in 1912. It stars Mary Pickford as the girl. These pictures were made so quickly, averaging two a week, that there are always errors that are allowed to pass. For example the tramp who tries to start a fight is almost off camera. But there are also regular advances in film technique. The cutting between the train and the cars, or the point of view shot when the hero looks through the binoculars.

The Unseen Enemy, Directed by D W Griffith in 1912 is the first film to star Lilian and Dorothy Gish in what were termed at the time"charming" performances. It is a simple melodrama with threat and rescue but played nicely. Victoriuanism prevails. Note the use of the idea of the kiss and how Dorothy reacts to her first kiss in the final few fading frames.

“Silent history done right” “The fight for freedom” “Classic battle scenes” “Exceptional but bogged down by a silly romance” (IMDB reviews quotes). NOTE: This complete version joins together what only had been available at IA as two separate video files. The Sealed Room, D.W. Griffth, 1908, a generic king seals his concubine and her minstrel lover in a room to die as per Balzac or Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" I find Griffith weakest when he makes these ventures into the distant past.

The Oath and the Man was directed by D W Griffith in 1910. Griffith is often out of his depth when he goes far back in history. Herein he trivializes the French revolution. Before you criticize him, though, remember he was making two or three of these a week. If you get a few laughs, you will be laughing at it not with it

Swords and Hearts, D W Griffith 1911. Griffith returns to the Civil war, this time with a story of a Southern officer, who when he returns from the war, finds his fiance attached to a Northern officer, but all is well, the poor but honest girl who saved him from death still loves him. It is not bad and worth a look. I have added music and some sounds. While these Biograph shorts may seem simplistic to us today, pause to consider how exciting they must have been to audience who may never have...

An Arcadian Maid was directed by D.W. Griffith in 1910. It stars Mary Pickford as a young poor girl who is lured to sin by an itinerant peddler played by Mack Sennett. It made me smile. While Pickford is playing her normal put upon innocent girl, Sennett seems to be playing it for comedy It is worth a watch. By the way, for those of you not familiar with the Griffith Biograph shorts, notice the circle with the AB inside it in the kitchen. Thus was the way the American Biograph company...

The Gibson Goddess was directed by D W Griffith in 1909. It is one of Griffith's few ventures into comedy with mixed results. The Gibson Girl was a very popular image at the time. Director D.W. Griffith's expensive, most ambitious silent film masterpiece Intolerance (1916) is one of the milestones and landmarks in cinematic history. Many reviewers and film historians consider it the greatest film of the silent era. The mammoth film was also subtitled: "A Sun-Play of the Ages" and "Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages." Griffith was inspired to make this film after watching the revolutionary Italian silent film epic Cabiria (1914) by director Giovanni...

The Girl And Her Trust directed by D W Griffith in 1912. It is a remake of an earlier film, The Lonedale Operator but by this time Griffith had learned a great deal about the making of movies. The picture has close-ups, and ironic cutting. Te see the words, "Nothing ever happens here" and then cut to the tramps under the platform. But toward the end he cuts between a train and a hand car and to build suspense he actually mounts the camera on a vehicle racing along the road and on the...
