The Mended Lute, directed by D.W. Griffith (1910) is a fragment. It is a story of American Indians, but no different than the similar stories he had done about whites. Father trades his daughter for blankets etc. Her true love captures her back from her new husband and a canoe chase ensues and the picture ends. It is interesting onlky as history. there.

The Redman's View was directed by D W Griffith for the Biograph Studios in 1909. (It is referred to as The Red Man's View in Wikepedia) Consider that Griffith made between 2 and 3 of these pictures a week, it is incredible to consider how much he must have worked. These stories had to be telegraphed to under 20 minutes and made clear without the use of sound. This one is interesting for its sympathetic portrayal of the Indian. This in a time when most movies were showing Indians as savage...

The New York Hat was directed by D W Griffith for the Biograph Studio in 1912. It has many of Griffith's stock players in it. You may spot Mae Marsh as a gossip or Lillian Gish as a customer in the store but the main roles are played by Lionel Barrymore as the pastor and Mary Pickford as he girl. The script was written by Anita Loos. It is a gentle story with a clear moral, but I thought the real star had to be the hat.

Ramona was directed by D W Griffith in 1910. It is the story of a Mexican girl (played by Mary Pickford) and an Indian boy in an ill-fated love affair. It demonstrates Griffith's sympathy for the Indian in a time when such sentiments were not so widespread.

The Painted Lady, D W Griffith 1912. So much is compressed into this short, it could easily have been a feature. Suffice it to say, it contains a perfectly lovely performance by Blanche Sweet. Warch her face, particular;ly in the ending scenes.

The Unseen Enemy, Directed by D W Griffith in 1912 is the first film to star Lilian and Dorothy Gish in what were termed at the time"charming" performances. It is a simple melodrama with threat and rescue but played nicely. Victoriuanism prevails. Note the use of the idea of the kiss and how Dorothy reacts to her first kiss in the final few fading frames.

The Sealed Room, D.W. Griffth, 1908, a generic king seals his concubine and her minstrel lover in a room to die as per Balzac or Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" I find Griffith weakest when he makes these ventures into the distant past.

Scarlet Street - D W Griffith - 1919 - From IMDB "A romantic bandit named Alvarez, wanted for raids on the mining camps of the California gold rush in 1849, is reformed by the love of a good woman." I am not sure why I am uploading this film. It is considered by many to be Griffith's worst. Perhaps history drives me. At any rate you have been warned.

The Gibson Goddess was directed by D W Griffith in 1909. It is one of Griffith's few ventures into comedy with mixed results. The Gibson Girl was a very popular image at the time. Here, from IMDB is an anonymous description of the film. "A pack of admirers won't leave a beautiful woman alone at a seaside resort, so she devises a plan. She appears in a leg-revealing swimsuit, but the stockings have been stuffed with cotton to make her limbs appear misshapen. All but one of the men is driven...

The title, is Probably an Americanization of the French, Les Mousquetaire de Pigalle, This is one of the better Griffith shorts. Made in 1913, it has a lovely performance by Lilian Gish which should remind you why she became a great star. Harry Cary who later did unbelievable stunts for John Ford and other Western directors is also in the picture. He is the tough looking gang member. Notice the interesting crowd scenes in the alley and on the street where every member of the crowd has a part to...

The House of The Closed Shutters was produced in 1910. It is a Civil War story about a man who turns out to be a coward so his mother closes the shutters of her house for years after. Like many of Griffith's shorts, it is over done with histrionics, particularly by the mother. It is of interest only historically.

(From Wikipedia) Isn't Life Wonderful? (1924) is a film, directed by D. W. Griffith for his company D. W. Griffith Productions, and distributed by United Artists. It was based on the novel by Geoffrey Moss and it went under the alternative title Dawn. The title of the film was spoofed in the Charlie Chase comedy Isn't Life Terrible (1925). Most of the scenes were filmed in Germany and Austria. Only one was filmed in New York at the studio. The film also stars Carol Dempster and Neil Hamilton....

A Corner in Wheat is a 1909 short film which tells of a greedy tycoon who tries to corner the world market on wheat, destroying the lives of the people who can no longer afford to buy bread. It was directed by D. W. Griffith and adapted by Griffith and Frank E. Woods from the novel The Pit (1903) by Frank Norris. Intercutting (cross-cutting) between still tableaux of the poor in the bread line and the lavish, active parties of the wealthy speculator somewhat anticipates the collision montage...

His Trust and His Trust Fulfilled are two one-reel films directed by D.W. Griffith in 1911. They were meant to be played as one story but due to technical limitations of the day were released separately. Here they are joined with music and sound effects added. It is a somewhat touching story of an old black, an Uncle Tom like character who takes care of the daughter of his dead master. Many of the battle scenes are precursors of what Griffith would do later in Birth of a Nation and his...

. "Dreamgirl", aka "Stacey Walker, Dreamgirl" (c. 1966) is a strange little film by producer David F. Friedman that was released as a short. But it also appears to be an excerpt or alternate take from "A Smell of Honey, a Swallow of Brine" (1966) with legit actor Sam Melville. A sado-masochistic fantasy of a guy dreaming about flogging a chained up Stacey Walker. Then it becomes a nightmare with Walker as a cruel dominatrix and the guy bound to a post. Walker also...

Another "sexploitation" film by by the highly productive Dwan Esper. Made in 1938 this is a comparison of two women undressing, supposedly being watched by a peeping tom, though, as in many of these movies the plot falls apart about 5 minutes in. Here we have an ex-wive of John Barrymore undressing and compared to a fat woman in another room for comic relief. The most enticing part of the film is the title. When the fat woman shows a bit of breast, there is a "censored" sign...
