Colorful Stars Galore Inside Globular Star Cluster Omega Centauri NASA's Hubble Space Telescope snapped this panoramic view of a colorful assortment of 100,000 stars residing in the crowded core of a giant star cluster. The image reveals a small region inside the massive globular cluster Omega Centauri, which boasts nearly 10 million stars. Globular clusters, ancient swarms of stars united by gravity, are the homesteaders of our Milky Way galaxy. The stars in Omega Centauri are between 10...

Mariner 4 was launched November 28, 1964 on a 228-day mission to Mars. The spacecraft carried instruments for eight interplanetary and planetary experiments including a TV camera. Mariner 4 passed Mars at a distance of 9,868 kilometers (6,118 miles), recording and transmitting to Earth our first close-up picture of the red planet. In 21 and a fraction of a 22nd picture, Mariner's TV camera scanned about one percent of the Martian surface, revealing ancient craters of varying size. Planetary...

On January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger and her seven-member crew were lost when a ruptured O-ring in the right Solid Rocket Booster caused an explosion soon after launch. Among other debris found in the ocean, search and recovery teams located this piece of the right vertical stabilizer. Although the stabilizer's surface suffered some heat discoloration and burns, the inner aluminum structure showed no signs of having melted. Investigators found various pieces of material from other...

The Moon (or ‘Luna’ in Latin) has occupied a prominent place in myth and folklore throughout human history. In the higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere, the day-to-day change in the time of moonrise is smallest in the months surrounding the fall equinox. This consistency is due to the small angle between the horizon and the ecliptic (the apparent sky path traveled by both the Moon and the Sun) at this time of year. The bright, full disk of Luna provides enough dependable light in the...

This is a computer-generated gravity map image of the Chicxulub Crater found on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The buried impact structure has been implicated in the mass extinction of life 65 million years ago and may be much larger than scientists first suspected. New analyses of gravity measurements in the region have turned up evidence that the feature is a multiring basin with a fourth, outer ring about 300 kilometers in diameter. At this diameter, the Chixulub Basin represents one of the...
