Dennis Wood Abstracts
Compiled by Dennis Wood, a merchant and whaling agent
in New Bedford, and a director of the Mutual Marine Insurance Company, the
abstracts were drawn from news reported in the Whalemen’s Shipping List and
Merchants’ Transcript, 1843-1914, and from letters, telegraphs, and reports
brought back by vessels.
The abstracts are arranged by voyage and usually
provide the following information: position of the vessel or port or whaling
ground where it was located; catch in barrels of whale oil and pounds of
whalebone; and incidents of the voyage. An abstract is the primary source of
information for an account of a whaling voyage where the logbook is missing.
